It was a roller coaster of a season in 2024 for the Collinsville Cardinals. It's not very often that a team that finishes fourth in the district is averaging nearly 40 points per game but that's what we saw from Collinsville in 2024. The Cardinals came into the 2024 season as a top five team in the preseason rankings. They would take care of business in non-district play, jumping out to a 3-0 start. They opened district play with their toughest opponent coming to town. The Cardinals were missing multiple starters on offense but Del City was just at another level. The Eagles won in convincing fashion and the Cardinals had to bounce back. They would win their next two games against Tulsa Rogers and Tahlequah. And then came a critical back to back stretch against Claremore and Pryor. They lost both games by a combined two points and that would end up costing the Cardinals with playoff seeding on the line. Collinsville wrapped up the regular season with two more wins to finish 7-3 but they went into the playoffs as the four seed. That meant a road game against a Booker T Washington team that had plenty of momentum after they captured the district championship. The Cardinals took a 20-19 lead early in the fourth quarter but the Hornets would score with a little less than five minutes to play to escape with a 25-20 victory. The Cardinals would see their season end in the first round for the second time in three years.

2025 OUTLOOK

You can certainly make the argument that Collinsville was right on the edge of going 9-1 in the 2024 regular season and who knows what happens in the playoffs after that. But as they turn the page to 2025, they'll look to leave no doubt that they are one of the teams to look out for in Class 5A. And as we start looking ahead to 2025, Class 5A feels about as wide open as it's been in the last few years. The Cardinals will need to find new faces to step up in a hurry, specifically on the line of scrimmage. The Cardinals bring back just four starters on the offensive side of the ball and while they'll be inexperienced up front, we really like the talent they bring back at the skill positions. Defensively, the Cardinals will bring back five starters on that side of the ball. And again, the big key will be how the new faces along the defensive line come together in 2025. The schedule will once again be a challenging one and the Cardinals might find themselves in the toughest district in Class 5A. Making the playoffs will be challenging but Collinsville is one of those 5A programs where making the playoffs has become an expectation. Now, they'll need to earn it and two big keys to that will be the emergence of new faces and staying healthy. An underrated part of their 2024 season was their best player missing key games in the middle of the regular season. If they can avoid the injury bug to those key pieces, they'll once again be in the mix this fall.

When Collinsville was missing their original QB1 last season, [player_tooltip player_id='1161901' first='Austin' last='Boren'] stepped up and played fairly well under center. He threw for over 500 yards and seven touchdowns but he brought a lot more to the table because he played multiple positions on both sides of the ball. This season, don't be surprised to see Boren playing multiple positions once again. We know that the Cardinals are excited about his potential as an overall athlete this fall. Boren has also seen his recruitment take off this offseason with a handful of offers. He's going to be a very valuable part to what the Cardinals do and that's going to be on both sides of the ball.

Collinsville senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='805100' first='Ben' last='Daniels'] has been on our radar since his breakout sophomore season. We thought that he was in position to emerge as the team's leading receiver in 2024 and that's how it played out. Daniels finished the year with 35 catches for over 700 yards and seven touchdowns. The senior standout also had 50 tackles on the defensive side of the ball. The production that Daniels had is even more impressive when you consider the fact that he had multiple quarterbacks throughout the year. It's hard to get into that groove when QB1 is changing. This season, Daniels certainly has the potential of seeing that production go up.

We mentioned earlier in the preview how the biggest question we have surrounding the 2025 Collinsville Cardinals centers on the line of scrimmage. On paper, junior [player_tooltip player_id='1719516' first='Colten' last='Wilson'] is a name to keep an eye on when the season kicks off in September. Wilson is listed at 6'5 and over 300 pounds and just looking at this team and their possibilities on paper, that certainly will catch your attention. Now, Wilson needs to go out and earn that spot on the line of scrimmage and then do something with it. And he's just one name up front. Wilson played right tackle for the Cardinals in 2024. He was also productive on defense. He's a big name to watch in 2025.

Earlier in the preview, we mentioned Collinsville missed their best player for a few games. Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1018641' first='Scott' last='Rigby'] is that player and he's back for one more run. Last season, he was one of the best running backs in Class 5A and if he would have had a full season, you can include him as one of the best in the state, regardless of class. Rigby was dominant, week after week. He finished the year with well over 1,500 yards and 27 touchdowns on the ground. With Rigby back in the lineup this fall, the Cardinals will once again have one of the best running backs in the game. He was one of the more productive players in the state, week after week.

Throwing on the tape and watching senior [player_tooltip player_id='1719522' first='Talan' last='Rush'] from his junior season, we have a feeling that Rush could be Collinsville's “swiss army knife” this season. First off, he immediately passes the eye test, at 6'2 and nearly 200 pounds. Rush ended up being a versatile weapon for the Cardinals on the offensive side of the ball and would turn around and become one of Collinsville's top defenders. Lining up at linebacker, Rush would finish the season with a little over 80 tackles on the year. Based on the numbers we have, he's the leading returning tackler on a Collinsville defense that will be somewhat inexperienced this fall. They'll lean on Rush to lead the way.

2025 SCHEDULE

Sept. 5th - AT Oologah
- The 2025 regular season will once again begin with a match-up against Oologah. Collinsville will head north up Highway 169 to face the Mustangs in the opener this year. The Cardinals have dominated this series over the last four years. They've won five straight, including a 41-10 win in 2024.
Sept. 11th - AT Edison
- After these two teams were district foes in 2022 and 2023, they became non-district opponents in 2024. It didn't change much with the results as Collinsville won their third straight in the series last season. The Cardinals won 56-6 and will be looking for their fourth straight win this year.
Sept. 19th - Bartlesville
- Non-district play will wrap up in week three, at home, against Bartlesville. This will be the eighth consecutive year that these two teams have met in non-district play and it's been a favorable series for the Cardinals. They've won seven straight in the series, beating the Bruins 37-23 last year.
Sept. 26th - AT Del City
- District play opens up in week four and it's the toughest match-up on the schedule for the Cardinals in 2025. Collinsville has to go on the road to face Del City, a team that beat them 61-10 last season. The Cardinals certainly haven't forgotten about last year's meeting.
Oct. 3rd - Tulsa Rogers
- In week five, Collinsville will return home for a meeting with Tulsa Rogers. And this is another series that has been completely one sided, in favor of the Cardinals. The Cardinals have won six straight in the series and four of those wins were shut outs. They won 55-0 in their match-up last year.
Oct. 10th - AT Tahlequah
- The Cardinals go back on the road for week six and they'll face Tahlequah in a very important district clash. Collinsville beat the Tigers 35-14 last season and that would end up making the difference between making or missing the playoffs. Needless to say, this will be a very important game.
Oct. 16th - Claremore
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Collinsville will host Claremore and the Cardinals are going to be motivated to turn things around in this series. The Cardinals won seven straight meetings from 2016-2022 but have dropped the last two match-ups, including last year's 35-34 loss.
Oct. 24th - AT Pryor
- Another rough road test comes in week eight as Collinsville goes on the road to face Pryor. Collinsville won 12 in a row in this series before they lost to the Tigers by a point last season. That week eight loss a year ago would force Collinsville into the four-seed in the playoffs.
Oct. 31st - Nathan Hale
- Collinsville will return home in week nine to face off with Nathan Hale. The Cardinals haven't lost to the Rangers at any point in recent memory and they've won every game against Nathan Hale under head coach Kevin Jones. The Cardinals would shut out the Rangers 48-0 in 2024.
Nov. 7th - Memorial
- The regular season will come to an end with another home game against a TPS program. Memorial comes to town in week ten and after two years of not being district opponents in 2022 and 2023, they faced off last year. Collinsville won 38-0 in 2024 and has won nine straight in this series.

NOTABLE

At the start of every season, it feels like Collinsville is one of those teams that you pencil in as a playoff team in Class 5A, every single season. Even last year is the perfect example. That was a Collinsville team that averaged nearly 40 points per game and nearly finished second in the district. But back to back one-point losses to Claremore and Pryor landed them in the four-seed and they fell to Booker T Washington. But since head coach Kevin Jones took over in 2010, he has made the Cardinals one of the consistent winners in Class 5A over the last 15 years. In his first two seasons, they had a losing record but haven't had a losing record since. There have been countless playoff runs, a pair of state championship game appearances and they won it all in 2021, with a perfect 14-0 record. There's a reason why Collinsville is consistently in most preseason top ten rankings for Class 5A at the start of the year. They routinely win, they win at a high level and they are seemingly always a team to watch in Class 5A.
