Throughout the month of July and even into August, we are publishing well over 100 of the most in-depth team previews that you'll find anywhere to get you completely ready for the 2025 football season. This is something that began for us at PRZ-Oklahoma in 2021 and it continues to get bigger and better every single year. We're looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state in every class. From defending champions, to the top contenders and plenty of dark horses and other teams to know, we'll have complete coverage every single day. There will be multiple previews dropping every single day! In this post, we take a look at the Broken Bow Savages!

Broken Bow Savages

Preseason Prep Redzone Ranking: #5 In Class 4A

Head Coach: Maverick Lang - 2nd Season - 6-4 Record At Broken Bow

2024 RESULTS (6-4 Record - Missed Playoffs)

Aug. 30th - Lost To McAlester 37-26
Sept. 6th - Beat Durant 42-34
Sept. 13th - Beat Idabel 42-21
Sept. 27th - Beat Glenpool 51-0
Oct. 4th - Beat Sallisaw 56-14
Oct. 11th - Beat Stilwell 48-14
Oct. 17th - Beat Hilldale 37-22
Oct. 25th - Lost To Ada 55-34
Oct. 31st - Lost To McLain 48-18
Nov. 8th - Lost To Poteau 31-0

2024 Offensive Scoring Average: 35.4 Points Per Game
2024 Defensive Scoring Average: 27.6 Points Per Game

A new era of Broken Bow football began in 2024. Maverick Lang came over from Meeker prior to the 2024 football season. They were coming off a year where they went 3-7 and lost in the first round of the 2023 playoffs. They turned things around immediately in 2024, doubling their win total from 2023 but they lost the wrong games down the stretch and missed out on going to the playoffs. The season started with a tough loss to McAlester. But they bounced back in a major way. The Savages went on to win six straight games. They beat Durant and Idabel to wrap up non-district play. They got a marquee district win over Sallisaw in week five and things were pointing up for Broken Bow. They had a legitimate star emerging at the quarterback position. They went into the final three weeks of the season with a 6-1 record. But they tripped up against Ada in week eight, losing 55-34. The Savages would then travel to Tulsa and suffer a shocking 48-18 loss to the Titans. And they closed out the regular season with a shutout loss to Poteau in the regular season finale. They went from 6-1, contending for the district title to 6-4 and missing the playoffs altogether. The Savages scored 25+ points in their first eight games but then scored 18 against McLain and they were shut out against Poteau. So as we start to turn the page and look ahead to the 2025 season, there is no doubt that Broken Bow will go into the season feeling like they have unfinished business. They started strong in 2024 and now they look to start and finish strong in 2025. And they have a team that could certainly do just that.

2025 OUTLOOK

The Broken Bow Savages come into the 2025 football season as a top five team in our Class 4A preseason rankings. Expectations are and should be at an all time high because of the legitimate star power that the Savages bring back this season. Eight starters return for an offense that averaged 35 points per game last season and scored 40+ points in half of their games last season. And this is an offense that is headlined by that star quarterback, who has one year of experience under his belt and his ceiling continues to get higher. Defensively, Broken Bow will bring back seven starters on that side of the ball. With the majority of their starters returning, that's a unit that could take a major step forward. Now, when you look at the schedule, you see plenty of challenges in front of the Savages, specifically with the district schedule. Ada and Sallisaw are both in our top five, along with Broken Bow. But the Savages will have the benefit of playing both of those teams at home. But the non-district schedule will challenge Broken Bow right from the start of the year. They'll play a preseason top ten team in Class 5A and a preseason top ten team in Class 3A. But behind an offense that could average north of 40 points per game this season and a defense that should improve throughout the year, Broken Bow is definitely a team to take seriously in the Class 4A championship race. And when you look at the top contenders, everybody has holes to fill and it doesn't feel like one or two teams are head and shoulders above everyone else. 4A feels more wide open and that's a perfect scenario for Broken Bow to make some noise.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Kyler Cupit - Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Quinlan Bailey - Running Back/Linebacker (All State Honorable Mention)

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Senior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1708772' first='Camden' last='Jackman'] has the potential to anchor a Broken Bow offensive line that paves the way for one of the best offenses in Class 4A. Jackman certainly has the measurables necessary to be that guy for the Savages this season. He measures in around 6'5 and around 300 pounds. He's your prototypical anchor of an offensive line. And when we got a chance to look at some of the top returning players, we really liked the size that Broken Bow is going to have on the line of scrimmage. Jackman won't be alone on the line of scrimmage but he's a player to watch this fall.

Sophomore wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1599208' first='Dejhaun' last='Hall'] is coming off a breakout season during his freshman year. We were told that Hall had the potential to be a dude for the Savages before one of their games that we watched in person. Hall immediately lived up to the hype. All in all, Hall would finish his freshman year with nearly 30 catches for well over 600 yards and five touchdowns. This season, we wouldn't be surprised to see Hall's production double. He could definitely end up being Broken Bow's top target in the passing game and his best football continues to be ahead of him. He has good size and playmaking ability.

At this time last year, we didn't know much about quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1525562' first='Greydon' last='Howell']. The people in southwestern Oklahoma did after Howell's freshman year in 2023, where he became a legitimate basketball and track star. Howell joined the football team a year ago and became arguably the most electrifying football player in the state. Howell immediately got everyone's attention early on in the season. He was just as likely to run for 200 yards as he was to pass for 200 yards. So needless to say, he became a name we needed to know about. He's become one of the best 2027 prospects in the state and has offers at multiple position.

(2024 All State Honorable Mention)

Junior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1171160' first='Kade' last='Pratt'] comes over to Broken Bow after starting for Idabel the last two seasons. Pratt would have a terrific sophomore campaign, becoming one of the top defenders on Idabel's defense. And when you throw on his tape, you see an incredibly physical player that impacts much more than just the defense. It felt like half of his clips on his sophomore film were of him on the kickoff team, coming in like a heat-seeking missile and destroying the kick returner. Like we said, he's a very physical player and that hard-hitting ability will give a big boost to this Broken Bow defense in 2025.

(2024 All State Honorable Mention)

Broken Bow has some legitimate star power on both sides of the ball but they also have players that will have significant impacts on both offense and defense. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1708771' first='Sky' last='Baker'] is a wide receiver and safety prospect to keep an eye on as the Savages come into the 2025 football season. On offense, Baker was somewhat limited last season but he has the size at 6'2 to give Broken Bow a major target in the passing game. Defensively, Baker had a little over 30 tackles but his impact was terrific in defending the pass. He broke up 12 passes and had several interceptions. His production could get a spike this fall.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

Achilles Pearson - 2027 Defensive Lineman
Aden Hammonds - 2028 Offensive Lineman
AJ Brannon - 2026 Wide Receiver
Isaiah Fields - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Jackson Porter - 2026 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Jattarirrius Neal - 2027 Running Back
[player_tooltip player_id='1833825' first='Kalel' last='Flagg'] - 2028 Wide Receiver

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - McAlester
- For the sixth consecutive season, Broken Bow will open up the regular season against McAlester. And in this series, the Savages are desperate to turn things around. Since starting the series in 2020, the Savages are 0-5 against the Buffaloes, including last year's 37-26 loss.
Sept. 5th - Durant
- Broken Bow hosts Durant in week one and this is an intriguing 4A/5A clash, featuring two teams that have the talent to make plenty of noise. The Savages won 42-34 last season and they've also won five of the last six, dating back to 2018, when they started playing in non-district play.
Sept. 12th - AT Idabel
- The non-district slate will wrap up with this southeastern showdown with Idabel in week two. The Savages beat the Warriors 42-21 last season and in the last two decades, Broken Bow has never lost to Idabel. The Warriors are going to have a first year head coach but still have talent.
Sept. 26th - AT Glenpool
- District play will open up with a road game against Glenpool in week four. Broken Bow beat the Warriors 51-0 last season. That 51-point victory would be the largest margin of victory for the Savages in 2024. Prior to meeting last season to open district play, these two last met in 2008.
Oct. 3rd - Sallisaw
- This is the first of the two marquee district clashes when Broken Bow hosts Sallisaw in week five. The Savages beat the Black Diamonds in dominant fashion last year, winning 56-14. It was a terrific win and the most points they scored in 2024. A win here is critical for district title hopes.
Oct. 10th - AT Stilwell
- The second half of the regular season begins with a road game against Stilwell in week six. And this has been a series that has been completely one-sided, in favor of Broken Bow. The Savages have won nine straight in the series, including last year's 48-14 victory.
Oct. 16th - AT Hilldale
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, the Savages go on the road to square off with Hilldale. Broken Bow has won two straight in the series with the Hornets, including last year's 37-22 victory. And this will be a new-look Hilldale team as they lost quite a few starters to graduation and transfers.
Oct. 24th - Ada
- It'll be a big game for Broken Bow when Ada comes to town in week eight. Depending on what's happened earlier in the season, this game could be a head to head clash for the district title. The Savages lost 55-34 last season and have lost three in a row to Ada. They need to turn things around in 2025.
Oct. 31st - McLain
- On a Halloween Friday night, Broken Bow hosts McLain in week nine. The Savages went to Tulsa last year and were stunned by the Titans, losing 48-18. That's one of the main losses that kept Broken Bow out of the postseason. It also snapped a three-game winning streak against McLain.
Nov. 7th - AT Poteau
- The regular season comes to an end with a road game against Poteau. The Savages are determined to turn things around in this series. They've lost two straight and six of the last seven. Poteau will look different moving forward under a new head coach, running a new offense.

NOTABLE

Broken Bow's 2024 season was an incredibly unique one when you look at the numbers. In 2023, they went 3-7 and made the playoffs, losing in the first round. One year later, they doubled their win total, going 6-4 but they simply lost the wrong games and were stuck on the outside looking in on the Class 4A playoffs. We don't know how often that kind of scenario has happened in Oklahoma but we're willing to guess that it hasn't happened very often. This season, the Savages wouldn't mind doubling their win total again and if that was the case, that meant they would be making a deep run in the playoffs. For Broken Bow, they look like a team that can certainly make the playoffs and make plenty of noise when they get there. But it's been a few years since they've had playoff success. Broken Bow comes into this season with a four-game losing streak in the playoffs. 2019 was the last time they made it out of the first round. This season, a lot could depend on what happens in the district slate. Whoever wins this district is going to be set up for success in the postseason. But regardless of where they finish, as long as they are in the dance, they have the ability to contend for the state title.

LAST FIVE SEASONS

2024 - 6-4 - Missed Playoffs
2023 - 3-7 - Lost In Class 4A 1st Round
2022 - 7-4 - Lost In Class 4A 1st Round
2021 - 8-3 - Lost In Class 4A 1st Round
2020 - 5-4 - Lost In Class 4A 2nd Round

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

4 State Championships

1989 - Beat Seminole 23-14
1985 - Beat Northeast 10-7
1973 - Beat Elk City 28-8
1972 - Beat Pauls Valley 12-7
