The Bishop McGuinness Irish began a new era as a football program in 2024. Assistant coach Ryan Stringer was hired as the next head coach of the Irish and he came into the 2024 football season looking to keep the Irish on the track they've been on for the majority of the last decade. McGuinness has been a team that has threatened in Class 5A but they were still waiting for that moment to take the crown. They kicked off the season with a tough loss to Deer Creek. But they rallied in the next three weeks, beating three straight “Bishops” from three different states. They beat Bishop Kelley, Bishop Lynch, TX. and Bishop Carroll, KS. to start 3-1. They dropped a close district contest to Midwest City and then another close game to Newcastle. Both of Bishop McGuinness' district losses were decided by a combined six points. Had the ball bounced a different way, the Irish could have captured the district title. Instead, they finished second in the district but punched their ticket to another playoff appearance. They took down Lawton with ease in the first round but the season came to an end in the quarterfinals with a shutout loss to Del City. Now, the Irish look to reload and make another run in Class 5A in 2025. And when you look around at the 5A landscape, it feels more wide open than it's been over the last decade. But the Irish are going to have to earn it if they finally kick down that door and contend for the title.

2025 OUTLOOK

The Irish definitely have to grow up fast as they come into this season. The Irish will have quite a few new faces taking the field in 2025. Only four starters return on the offensive side of the ball for a unit that averaged 37 points per game. This was such an underrated offensive unit last fall but they will have seven new starters this season. Now, the strength of this offense will come from the line of scrimmage. The Irish bring back the majority of the guys up front and that's going to give their new quarterback and the skill players time to develop and get their feet wet when the bullets start flying. The McGuinness coaches are very confident about how they will look on the line of scrimmage. And the Irish have done a good job of producing high-quality offensive linemen over the last decade so we definitely trust their evaluation and overall opinion of that group. Defensively, the Irish bring back six starters on that side of the ball and similar to the offense, the strength will come from the line of scrimmage. The Irish bring back some absolute monsters on the defensive line and it even extends to the linebackers. The front seven as a whole will come into this season with a lot of confidence and that should help out the new starters in other areas. Their district feels completely wide open as we head into the season. Newcastle is the deafening district champ but they have question marks. Midwest City has a new head coach and Lawton MacArthur has talent but haven't gotten over the hump with this group. That could open the door for the Irish to surprise some teams and steal the district title. And if they do that, they will set themselves up with a favorable path in the playoffs.

At this time last year, senior [player_tooltip player_id='587264' first='Aiden' last='Monigold'] was the new addition to the McGuinness defensive line. He moved up to Oklahoma City after becoming a standout for Lawton Eisenhower. He's an incredibly disruptive player and he had a solid season for the Irish in 2024. Now, he's looking to elevate his game even further and become an absolute force on the line of scrimmage. Monigold checks a lot of the boxes when it comes to being that pass rusher off the edge, causing chaos on the line. He has size, speed and his acceleration off the line is going to be a problem for opposing offensive linemen. In our opinion, he's one of the more underrated 2026 prospects.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1010142' first='Andrew' last='Harris'] continues to bring a lot of versatility to the Bishop McGuinness lineup and he's doing it on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Harris provides the Irish with a reliable target in the passing game from the tight end position. He's also an extension of the offensive line when it comes to dominating the line of scrimmage. Defensively, Harris is a hybrid defender that seems to be just as comfortable putting his hand on the ground and coming off the edge or standing up as more of a traditional linebacker. No matter where Harris is lined up, opponents need to know where he is at all times. This could end up being a big senior season for him.

Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1689435' first='Gage' last='Chance'] has been handed the keys to this offense and we're looking forward to seeing how he performs this season. The McGuinness coaches are excited about his overall playmaking ability and the damage he can do as a passer but also as a runner. And as we've mentioned a few times in this preview, he's going to benefit from having an incredibly strong offensive line paving the way for him on the line of scrimmage. The Irish need new faces to emerge at the wide receiver position for Chance to have that breakout season but we know he's going to have time in the pocket. He has the potential to be a breakout player in Class 5A.

So we've mentioned a time or two how the Bishop McGuinness offensive line could be really good this season. For us, it starts with senior left tackle [player_tooltip player_id='1699020' first='Jacob' last='Costello'] and he's one of the more underrated prospects in the state. We got a great chance to watch him go to work back in the spring at a team camp and he was dominant. The Irish have several guys to look out for on the offensive line but Costello checks a lot of boxes from a prospect perspective. He's listed at 6'5 and over 300 pounds and he simply made it look easy when we saw him back in the spring. We think that he has the potential to set the tone for the Irish on the offensive line and have a big year.

Sophomore running back [player_tooltip player_id='1743060' first='Malachi' last='Darby'] is a running back that we think is primed for a monster sophomore season. Darby is another player that we really watched for the first time back in the spring and he really impressed us. As we get closer to the 2025 football season kicking off, we start looking around to see if there are players primed to go from somewhat unknown to some of the best guys at their position, in their respective class. For us, Darby is a guy that fits that mold. We would be fairly surprised if he doesn't end up having a big sophomore season. He might not be one of the more known RBs in 5A football but that won't last long.

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - AT Deer Creek
- For the second straight year, Bishop McGuinness will open up the regular season against Deer Creek. Last season didn't work out so well as the Antlers rolled to a 53-17 victory. It was the renewal of an old 5A rivalry from 2012-2015, when these two programs were district foes.
Sept. 5th - Bishop Kelley
- Bishop McGuinness has their home opener against Bishop Kelley in week one and it's their only home game until October 17th. McGuinness has dominated this rivalry lately, winning four of the last five and six of the last eight, including last year's 39-25 victory over their Tulsa rivals.
Sept. 13th - AT Bishop Lynch (Arlington, TX)
- For the second straight year, Bishop McGuinness will head down to Texas for a showcase series. Last year, they faced Bishop Lynch at The Star in Frisco. This year, they'll head to Arlington to face Bishop Lynch at the old Texas Rangers ballpark. Last year, they beat Lynch 34-28.
Sept. 19th - AT Bishop Carroll, KS.
- After heading south to Texas, McGuinness will cross state lines again the following week but this time, they're heading north to Kansas. They'll face Bishop Carroll in week three. Last season was the first meeting between these two teams. McGuinness dominated on the way to a 49-0 win.
Sept. 26th - AT Classen SAS
- District play will kick off with yet another road game in week four. Bishop McGuinness makes the trip over to Classen SAS and the Irish look to dominate once again. Last season, in the first meeting between these two in recent memory, the Irish would roll to a 63-0 victory over the Comets.
Oct. 10th - AT Midwest City
- After a week off, McGuinness gets back on the bus for their fourth straight road game, this time to face Midwest City. The Bombers beat the Irish 14-11 last season. They also met in the 2023 playoffs, which was a McGuinness win. Midwest City could look pretty different this year with a first year head coach.
Oct. 17th - Duncan
- In their first home game since week one, Bishop McGuinness hosts Duncan in week seven. The Demons were a new district opponent for the Irish in 2024. The only previous meetings in recent memory were playoff games. The Irish had no problems last year, beating Duncan 60-7.
Oct. 24th - AT Southeast
- The final road game on the regular season schedule comes in week eight as the Irish face off with Southeast. These teams have been district foes the last three seasons and it has not been competitive. McGuinness beat the Spartans 70-7 last season and the closest game in the last three years was a 28-point win.
Oct. 31st - Newcastle
- Don't be surprised if the district championship gets decided here as McGuinness hosts Newcastle in week nine. These two teams met for the first time last season, with Newcastle winning 24-21. The Racers went on to play in the 5A semifinals. These teams finished 1 and 2 in district last year.
Nov. 7th - Lawton MacArthur
- The regular season finale comes in week ten as McGuinness hosts Lawton MacArthur. These two teams have been consistent playoff teams for decades but last year was their first meeting since 2005. The Irish would prevail 38-23 in last year's meeting but the highlanders have a lot of talent returning.

NOTABLE

Bishop McGuinness has one of the longest active playoff appearance streaks in the state. Last season was the 26th consecutive year that the Irish have made the playoffs. 1998 was the last time that they failed to make the postseason. There are only a handful of teams that have longer active streaks than the Irish. Bishop McGuinness also nearly had to move up a class because of their recent success in the postseason. In April of last year, Bishop McGuinness was facing being moved up to Class 6A-2 but after several OKC-area private schools won a court case, they dropped back down to Class 5A. Now, we'll never know what would have happened in a hypothetical world where McGuinness was still in Class 6A-2 in 2024. But we have no problem with speculating and our assumption is that the Irish would have still been a playoff team and who knows what would have happened if they made the playoffs. This season, Class 5A feels incredibly wide open so it will be fun to see what teams emerge. Out of all the teams on the outside looking in on the preseason 5A rankings, the Irish feel like the most solid lock to be a top ten team by year's end.
