As we approach the season, realignment is at the top of my mind. For the first time, North Carolina is going to an 8A system, which will further stratify the schools. So, over the next couple of months, I'm going through classifications to highlight the players fans will need to know.

First up, the 3A/4A running backs. Don't let the size of their schools fool you, these guys can play.

Wingate transferred to Maiden after three years at North Lincoln and the move could pay dividends for the power back with great vision and good speed. Wingate put up over 3,200 rushing yards in two years as a starter, running for an impressive 50 touchdowns in the process. I'm excited to see if he can flash as a receiver and pass-blocker in a new system in 2025.

A bruising power back, Davis plays both ways for East Duplin and has put up impressive numbers in back-to-back seasons, averaging over eight yards a carry as both a sophomore and junior. He also has 4.5 sacks in the last two seasons after playing some as an off-ball linebacker and edge rusher. Davis has good vision and is a long-strider, running away from defenses at the second level.

Martin slipped through the evaluation cracks until a strong Pre Redzone camp put him squarely on my radar. What he's done in three seasons at Mount Airy is incredibly impressive, especially considering last season was his first as a starter, after sitting behind an ACC back. He had 38 touchdowns last season to bring his total to 65 and we wouldn't be surprised to see him pass 100 scores in his career.

Little doesn't have the same type of numbers as some of the other guys on this list, but he's wholly worthy of inclusion. Little displays good vision, patience, and burst and with a few more opportunities, a 1,000-yard season isn't out of the question, as he has the talent to put up such numbers.

McPhatter is ridiculously athletic, the No. 2 running back in our 2028 rankings and we expect a huge sophomore year from the explosive scat back. Don't be fooled by his size, he has plenty of strength in his legs and can run through arm tackles. Even at 5'10", he can dunk a basketball and that explosion shows up in the form of excellent acceleration to the line.
