As we approach the season, realignment is at the top of my mind. For the first time, North Carolina is going to an 8A system, which will further stratify the schools. Over the last few weeks, I've looked at some of the top players in the lower classifications.

You can find the other positions for the 3A/4A schools below. After hitting the linebackers earlier this week, I'm wrapping up our series with a look at the 3A/4A defensive backs. Since many of these guys play every position in the secondary, I'm putting all of the secondary together here.

A move from corner to safety has the potential to increase Dula's action on the stat sheet, as he was avoided like the plague as a shutdown corner in 2023 and 2024 before an injury cost him his junior season. Now fully healthy, Dula will look to push Jordan-Matthews to the next level, patrolling the middle of the defense as a hybrid box/free safety and as a gadget guy on offense who can create explosive plays.

Brewington was opportunistic last season, creating four turnovers in limited snaps. He has the athleticism and profile to project as a guy who will take another step forward this season, especially as he's gained weight and strength this offseason.

A dynamic multi-sport athlete, Reid won multiple state championships in track last year and that profile shows up on tape. He plays longer than his frame would suggest and it really shouldn't surprise anyone that the state champion long-jumper and hurdler can get up either. He reads the eyes of the quarterback well and he's a guy we could see popping on the recruiting trail as a senior.

Another multi-sport athlete, Burleson is a physical tackler who can also make big plays against the pass. He had four interceptions last season to go with a couple of pass deflections and a fumble recovery. He's grown significantly, both in stature and as a player, in recent seasons.

Helms' role shifted from his freshman to his sophomore year, but he was no less important for his North Stanly squad. A year after being among the team leaders in tackles, Helms was put in a more coverage-heavy role and played it to perfection, picking off seven passes while taking on an increased workload as a receiver. He has excellent length and we're interested to see what he can do as a junior.
