As we approach the season, realignment is at the top of my mind. For the first time, North Carolina is going to an 8A system, which will further stratify the schools. So, over the next couple of months, I'm going through classifications to highlight the players fans will need to know.

First up, the 1A/2A running backs. Don't let the size of their schools fool you, these guys can play.

A massive, bruising back, Campbell is a bowling ball for East Bladen, playing mainly as a power back in a gap-heavy scheme. He's a two-way guy whose highest upside might be as an edge or off-ball linebacker. He doesn't have the straight-line speed of some of the other guys on this list, but he frequently runs through defenders and opens things up for the rest of his offense.

A shiftier scatback, Phillips scaled his production as he went from fewer than 75 carries to 200 touches as a junior. He reached nearly 2,000 yards and scored 31 times last season, reaching 100 yards in all 10 games and hitting 200 in his final three. A true home run hitter, Phillips had a run of at least 35 yards in all but one game.

Clem is one of our favorite running backs in the state, regardless of the size of his school. His film is electric, and he's making waves on the recruiting trail at summer camps this year. Clem has home run speed, as evidenced by multiple long touchdown runs, including a 99-yarder against Highland Tech last season. I'd like to see him add about 10-15 more pounds as I think that'd really help his college stock.

A two-year starter at Lakewood, Lacewell runs well and eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in 2024. More importantly, he fixed his fumbling issue that he has as a freshman, dropping from four to zero as a sophomore. He has excellent size and home run speed, making him difficult to bring down, especially when he can get to the second level of the defense.

Cromartie had a memorable freshman season for Union, running for over 1,000 yards and contributing as the team's primary kick returner. Union struggled last season, but Cromartie could be the guy to put them back in the win column, especially if he can cut down on the fumbles that often came from trying to do too much.
