The offensive and defensive lines took center stage during the first session of the Minnesota Prepredzone Showcase. One defensive lineman who stood out above the rest was Waconia big man [player_tooltip player_id='1452200' first='Nehemiah' last='Ombati'].

"The competition was great," Ombati said. "The coaches pushed me. It was a productive day."

Ombati wanted to stand out and get noticed.

"I have been going to national tournaments for five on five, so going into the Combine, I went into it to show I have the skill level and shouldn't be overlooked. I wanted to prove I am more than what people might see."

A tip during the speed and agility drills was something he will be using going forward.

"I got some help on how to lower my 40 time. A lot of my testing at the combine was good, but I wasn't happy with my 40 time."

His speed was not the main reason he felt he was selected as one of the MVPs.

"Overall, I showed that I have high-level technique," Ombati said. "I get off the ball faster than a typical 260-pound nose tackle. I felt like I showed a higher skill level."

Since the football season ended, Ombati has been keeping active athletically.

"I have been throwing discus and shot in track. I have been working with Line of Scrimmage and going to national tournaments with Trench Mob and my five-on-five team. Those tournaments are super energetic and give you that football atmosphere."

"I wrestled this winter," Ombati continued. "Our overall season was great. I fell short of State. I took third at sections. Wrestling has helped me a lot. It helps me with my hand placement and gives me explosive hips. I move pretty well for a heavyweight. I am pretty good with snap-down takedowns."

Moving well and having good hips also explain why Ombati is effective inside.

"I am explosive for a nose tackle. You might expect a nose tackle to just hold a gap, but I am good at using my pass-rushing ability and getting into the backfield."

The attention he expects to get from offenses this fall has framed his off-season skill development.

"I know I am going to deal with double and triple teams all the time, so I need to learn to get used to that. I will be in my second year on varsity, so I need to get used to that sort of pressure, so when I do get a one-on-one during a game, I can impact how the game is going."

There is a long way to go, but Ombati is happy with where his recruiting is at this early stage.

"Recruiting has been going great. Schools are reaching out to get me to campus or a camp. I have heard from Rutgers, Minnesota, Northwestern, Iowa, and Kansas."
