His ability to get off the ball quickly and make plays in the backfield is impressive. He uses his hands well and rips through the offensive tackle's arms when he is rushing the passer. He also shows a motor that never stops. He is constantly chasing down, plays all over the field. He also is starting to develop pass-rushing moves and use them against offenses in key passing situations. His ability to play as both a center on offense and a defensive tackle on defense is impressive. He also plays both at a high level. At center, he does a great job run blocking. His ability to snap the ball and then block defensive tackles and drive them off the ball is impressive. He also moves his feet well and you see it in pass protection with his ability to stay in front of defenders. Then, at the defensive line, he is a load to deal with. He is hard to move off his spot, especially against the run. His ability to disrupt the offensive backfield is also impressive. He is a classic quarterback who feels comfortable in the pocket. His mechanics are good, and he does an excellent job of reading the defense. He throws with anticipation and seems to understand how to throw the ball underneath to open receivers. He anticipates where receivers will be, and he throws them to that spot. He has good mobility, and he can scramble around and make a play if the play breaks down. Smeltz is a good wide receiver who knows how to open. His ability to run a route and then sit in the hole of a zone is impressive. He also does an excellent job of running routes. I like his ability to catch the ball in traffic and gain yards as well after the catch. Then, on a defensive back, he is a highly skilled defensive back who does a good job dropping in coverage and making a play on the ball thrown in his direction. At defensive back he had good coverage skills. His ability to break on balls thrown in his direction is excellent. He usually can break up the pass or intercept it. He also is a good tackler, who tackles the open field well. He is also a good punt returner and shows excellent moves in the open field.
