Two days from now the Saint Paul Panthers play for the WCAC Championship against St. Mary's Ryken. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Prince Georges Sports and Learning Complex, should be action packed fun. The Panthers are coming in on a five game winning streak, with their offense rolling and their defense holding opponents to 14 points per game. Their last defeat came at the hands of St. Mary's and Paul VI would love nothing more than some sweet revenge.

This game has the makings of a barn burner and I would expect it to be well attended, playing right next to the Washington Commanders stadium. How the Panthers got here is impressive, they are having a history making season and are 1 win away from the first WCAC title in over 20 years. Only two losses on the year with one of them a heartbreaker to St. Mary's back in October, the Panthers have an explosive offense and a stout defense. A breakdown of players to watch for Paul VI is below:

Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1232939' first='Brett' last='Edmonds'] is capping off an excellent career for Paul VI and has been the leader of their explosive offense. A dual threat passer, since my co-worker Cole evaluated him the young man has been on a terror. He has helped guide the Panthers on this winning streak with his offense averaging over 38 points per game. By talking with him lately you can tell how much this run has meant to Edmonds and his teammates and they are looking to cash in with a title on Friday.

The workhorse running back for the Panthers is previous game ball recipient Joshua "Buck" Johnson. Johnson galloped his way to 17 touchdowns this fall and averaging over 7 yards per carry, he has been a star in 2024. Curious to see how his recruiting picks up, I know he has a few division 3 offers but he deserves more. Anyhow, Johnson's ranking doesn't do him justice he has been one of the best players in all of Virginia this season.

Reyes is a stud off the edge I profiled him last month, the dude gets after it, notching 6 sacks and 24 pressures. Love the way he plays the Panthers defense has some well coached studs like him too. Only ranked 26th in his position group class, Reyes is a key example of someone who only helped their stock. A great junior season and his size (6'3) and play will get him some attention from colleges this off-season.

Another kid who has helped himself immensely with his play is linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1264848' first='Miles' last='Sanderson']. A second team WCAC selection, Sanderson is also a wrestling star for the Panthers. Young man brings it on every blitz, at 6'2 and 210 lbs., I can understand why division 1 schools are starting to show interest. He really explodes thru on each tackle he collects, and for those asking I lost track on the amount of tackles he has accrued (it was 50 after 5 games).

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1231558' first='Gavin' last='Woo'] is a playmaker at receiver and stout lock down defensive back for Paul VI. Watching his work against Saint Michaels the Archangel earlier this year, I came away very impressed. For those that aren't aware Saint Michaels has a plethora of playmakers especially at receiver and Woo stood his ground. Good footwork and hip movement, I like him more in the secondary at the next level.

The Johns Hopkins commit [player_tooltip player_id='1207634' first='Cole' last='Stup'] is another star for the Panthers defense, between him and Sanderson they are formidable duo at linebacker. Whatever Sanderson doesnt clean up on any blitz it seems Stup is there to collect. One of the conference leaders in tackles, Stup's tackling is on point and his play earned him an opportunities to play at the next level. I think the Blue Jays have a player in Stup that should see significant action right away.

Like what I see out of senior [player_tooltip player_id='1232322' first='[player_tooltip player_id='1221142' first='Gabriel' last='']' last='Johnson'] at both safety and running back. Strong safety is where he can play in college, Johnson is a technician on the back end of the Panthers defense. He has good range and great explosion when he flies in for the tackle, this dude is tough as nails.
