Class 5A Quarterfinal Recap

As is the case in Class 5A, the defending champions remain alive in the 4A field. Lewis Central joined North Polk, North Scott and Pella in Thursday's semifinals at the UNI-Dome with wins last Friday night.

North Scott was the only school among the final four to win away from home last week. The quartet reached The Dome with a combined 40-4 record, showing throughout the season that they were worthy of this achievement.

Here's a closer look at 4A quarterfinal action from Friday with standout student-athletes:

North Polk 35, Xavier 14

For the second season in a row, North Polk ended Xavier's season in the quarterfinals. This meeting was more one-sided than last year's 17-14 Comet win.

Dynamic North Polk quarterback Nathan Feldmann completed 5 of 7 throws for 52 yards and a touchdown. The senior rushed 16 times for 148 yards and another score. BJ Tate picked up 81 yards and a TD on 16 carries, and [player_tooltip player_id='1361535' first='Jake' last='Hout'] caught a touchdown.

Luke Engebretson led the winners with 8.0 tackles (7 solo, 1.0 TFL, 1.0 Sack), while Jacok Phillips and Henry Christensen teamed up for 11 solo tackles. Carter Van Brocklin recorded a sack and recovered a fumble, and Feldmann, Phillips and [player_tooltip player_id='1760678' first='Brady' last='Cathcart'] each picked off a pass.

The Comets remained perfect at 11-0. Xavier finished up at 7-4. The Saints had not uploaded statistics from this game to Bound.com at the time of this story's publishing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmOejE9Wg9g

North Scott 28, Decorah 24

Decorah led this game, 17-7, heading into the fourth quarter. North Scott rallied for the victory, continuing the trend of reaching The Dome in even-numbered years during this decade.

[player_tooltip player_id='690937' first='Thanaphat' last='Chase Smith'] completed 23 of 33 throws for 345 yards and three touchdowns in Friday's victory. The senior added an 11-yard scoring catch from receiver, [player_tooltip player_id='1279117' first='Cash' last='Bowe'].

[player_tooltip player_id='305767' first='Carson' last='Lage'] hauled in 11 passes for 200 yards and two TDs, Bowe caught eight balls for 77 yards, and [player_tooltip player_id='1418139' first='Kye' last='Smith'] had four receptions for 68 yards and a score. The recent game was tied 7-7 at halftime.

It was another competition favoring the defenses. Pella's Nate Warner and Gage Branderhorst teamed up for 26.0 tackles, all solo.
