A new season begins this week as district play opens up and every Thursday, we'll take a look at ten players to watch in some of the best games across Oklahoma. Earlier this week, we broke down some of those top games. We also put out a practice report on Moore before their road trip to face Mustang in an unbeaten showdown and had an in-depth breakdown on the 6A-1 battle between Bixby and Jenks. Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma every day throughout the season for new content!

[player_tooltip player_id='434307' first='Barrett' last='Travis'] - Senior Running Back/Linebacker - Heritage Hall

Heritage Hall hasn't lost a district game in a very long time and they don't plan on starting anytime soon. Leading the way in their showdown with North Rock Creek will be senior [player_tooltip player_id='434307' first='Barrett' last='Travis'] at the running back position. Travis showed signs throughout the last two seasons that he's ready to be a productive playmaker at running back and now it's happening. Travis is also coming into this week after a stellar performance against Millwood in week three. The Chargers held on for the win and Travis ran for nearly 150 yards and a touchdown. He also added nearly ten tackles from the linebacker position. Now, we get a really good running back match-up on Thursday night as Travis and the Chargers host North Rock Creek in a first round rematch from last year.

[player_tooltip player_id='1507676' first='BJ' last='Palmer'] - Senior Running Back - Walters

In one of the top games in Class A-1, we'll see Walters going on the road to face Christian Heritage. Walters continues to rise up the rankings and Christian Heritage is much better than their 1-2 record after playing a tough non-district schedule. But the player to watch for us in this match-up is senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1507676' first='BJ' last='Palmer'] from Walters. Coming into this season, we didn't know much about Palmer but there is no doubt that he is having an outstanding senior season. He's coming off a big performance in week three against Velma-Alma and hungry for more this week. Palmer is already into the double digits for touchdowns on the ground and he was tough to stop in last week's victory. Going back and watching that week three performance, he's a good looking running back.

[player_tooltip player_id='1082649' first='Brad' last='Hoisington'] - Senior Quarterback - Claremore

We have to tip our caps to Claremore following their 3-0 start to the season. We thought the Zebras might take a step back after a memorable run to the semifinals in 2023. That hasn't happened and they have another big game this week against Tahlequah. If the Zebras open district play with another win, there's no reason to think that the Zebras can't go on another memorable run. Leading the way this season has been senior [player_tooltip player_id='1082649' first='Brad' last='Hoisington'] at the quarterback position. Hoisington has been able to put up numbers in the passing game but he's also been a big part of Claremore's offense in the ground game. Hoisington is new to Claremore after putting up solid numbers last season with Oologah. We're looking forward to seeing what Hoisington does this week.

[player_tooltip player_id='1235926' first='Drew' last='Frankenfield'] - Sophomore Quarterback - Owasso

We've already said it once or twice in the last month but there are few quarterbacks that have impressed us more than sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1235926' first='Drew' last='Frankenfield'] at Owasso. Simply put, he doesn't look like a sophomore. And when Frankenfield and the Rams return to the field to host Broken Arrow on Friday night, it wouldn't be surprising to see him put up big numbers once again while remaining efficient and poised. Frankenfield and Owasso got about as good of a start as you can ask for by beating Bixby and Jenks in the first two weeks. The Rams look like the new favorite in Class 6A-1 and Frankenfield has definitely looked the part against some of the best teams in the class. After a week off, we're looking forward to seeing how the sophomore quarterback looks to start district play.

[player_tooltip player_id='595674' first='Lane' last='Whitworth'] - Senior Defensive Back - Piedmont

It's the game of the week in Class 6A-2 as #6 Piedmont will host #3 Choctaw. This will be Piedmont's first district game against 6A-2 competition and it doesn't get much bigger than this one. Choctaw has an offense that can absolutely light up the scoreboard. They have two quarterbacks that can sling it all over the field so slowing them down will be a big key to scoring the victory in district play. Senior defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='595674' first='Lane' last='Whitworth'] is going to be a name that we're watching in this one. Whitworth has incredible instincts at the safety position and should be one of the top tacklers in 6A-2 when it's all said and done this fall. If the Piedmont senior and the rest of the Piedmont secondary slow down Choctaw's offense, they could pull off the big district win.

[player_tooltip player_id='479389' first='Matrail' last='Lopez'] - Senior Athlete - Idabel

On Thursday night, Idabel will host a Holland Hall team that is young but has continued to gain confidence over the last few weeks. The Warriors have quite a few playmakers to keep an eye on this week against the Dutch but we have to put the spotlight on senior [player_tooltip player_id='479389' first='Matrail' last='Lopez'] as it doesn't matter where he is on the field, he can make plays. He's coming off a terrific performance last week where he totaled well over 200 total yards and three touchdowns. Lopez exploded as a prospect this offseason and would eventually commit to Oklahoma State as a wide receiver prospect. Lopez is incredibly dynamic on both sides of the ball and he's also a threat in special teams. Simply put, when Lopez is on the field, you have to be aware of where he is at all times.

[player_tooltip player_id='1330266' first='Reid' last='Patterson'] - Junior Quarterback - Kingston

It's one of the better match-ups in Class 2A-1 as Kingston will host Kiefer in a top ten showdown. The Redskins return to the field after a week off while Kiefer has some momentum following a big win over Sperry in the final two minutes. Leading the way for the Redskins will be junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1330266' first='Reid' last='Patterson'] and the last time we saw him on the field, he was playing at an incredibly high level. In fact, he was about as close to perfect as you can get. He threw for nearly 250 yards and four touchdowns on 7-8 passing. He also added a rushing touchdown. Kingston was a team that we really liked coming into the season and having a productive quarterback returning in Patterson was a big reason why. The only blemish on the record was to Fairview in the final minute.

[player_tooltip player_id='1018641' first='Scott' last='Rigby'] - Junior Running Back - Collinsville

In our opinion, it's one of the best games of the week as #2 Collinsville hosts #5 Del City in a Class 5A showdown and we'll be in the house on Friday night for this one. Junior running back [player_tooltip player_id='1018641' first='Scott' last='Rigby'] came into this season as a player to watch after a breakout season during his sophomore campaign. He's lived up to the preseason hype in the first three games, putting up big numbers as the Cardinals have jumped out to a 3-0 start. Rigby has run for well over 500 yards and eight touchdowns in the first three games. He's had at least 120 yards and two touchdowns in each of the first three games. However, Rigby and the Cardinals are going up against a Del City defense that can shut down an opposing run game. But look out for Rigby and the Cardinals in this 5A showdown.

[player_tooltip player_id='477314' first='Waleed' last='Gaines Jr'] - Senior Defensive Back - Mustang

In one of the more underrated games of week four, we'll see Mustang hosting Moore in a match-up of unbeaten 6A-1 teams. When we look at this match-up on paper, we think that the Mustang front seven is going to be very important because of Moore's ability to run the ball. But our player to watch is senior defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='477314' first='Waleed' last='Gaines Jr'] in the secondary. In last week's win over Westmoore, Gaines had a big performance with two interceptions, taking one of them back for a touchdown. We've thought for a while that Gaines is one of the better cover corners in one on one situations in Class 6A-1. If the Broncos can take away the run, the Lions will have to throw the ball. And when they do, that's going to open the door for Gaines to make plays.

[player_tooltip player_id='1288788' first='Whelan' last='Carson'] - Senior Wide Receiver/Linebacker - Perry

In Class 2A-1, we'll see marquee match-ups almost every week in this district because it's stacked with good teams. Perry goes on the road to face Jones in a top ten showdown and we should get used to seeing those. Leading the way for the Maroons will be senior [player_tooltip player_id='1288788' first='Whelan' last='Carson'] on both sides of the ball. For us, Carson looks like a prototypical linebacker at the next level but there's no debating that he's one of the top offensive threats in the passing game in Class 2A-1. Last season, he was one of Class 2A's leading receivers and nothing has really changed this season. If Carson ends up having a really big game on both sides of the ball, the Maroons could be in a position to pull off the upset on the road. Either way, he's going to be a name to watch each week.
