<p><strong>1. Lewis Central (1-0) – </strong>The defending 4A state champs began the new campaign in style with a 31-10 triumph at 3A Harlan Friday night. The Titans rode the arm of senior signal caller [player_tooltip player_id='1279100' first='Brady' last='Hetzel'], an all-stater in '23. [player_tooltip player_id='1619876' first='Peyton' last='Phippen'] and Leonardo Tatum were his main targets, and [player_tooltip player_id='1360057' first='Brody' last='Patlan'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1360075' first='Chance' last='Chappell'] carried the running game. DL [player_tooltip player_id='1197453' first='Kyler' last='McNeal'] started his sophomore season off with a bang, collecting four solo tackles, 2.5 TFLs and a sack. Phippen delivered a Pick-6. </p>

<p><strong>2.</strong> <strong>Cedar Rapids Xavier (1-0) – </strong>The state runners-up also got off on the right foot. Xavier <a href="https://www.thegazette.com/football/young-saints-grind-past-waverly-shell-rock-14-7/">outlasted an improved Waverly-Shell Rock squad</a>, 14-7, Friday in Cedar Rapids. [player_tooltip player_id='1619867' first='Ryan' last='Kelly'] delivered big plays running and receiving. Carter Hoffmann rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown, and Jack Stevenson hauled in an 11-yard scoring pass from [player_tooltip player_id='1827747' first='Cash' last='Parks']. Stevenson also shines as a linebacker.</p>

<p><strong>3. Norwalk (1-0) – </strong>Norwalk looked like a team capable of contending in 4A. It toppled Carlisle, 35-7, at Warrior Stadium. Talented TE [player_tooltip player_id='1198816' first='Luke' last='Brewer'] caught three passes for 44 yards. <p><strong>4. North Scott (1-0) – </strong>Central DeWitt dealt with a rude guest Friday night. North Scott left town with a 41-6 victory. [player_tooltip player_id='1402859' first='Jerrod' last='Lee'] rushed for 107 yards (7.1 YPC). <p><strong>5. Gilbert (1-0) – </strong>The Tigers rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit for a 35-28 win at Dallas Center-Grimes Friday. Iowa State LB commitment [player_tooltip player_id='252314' first='Will' last='Hawthorne'] rushed 40 times for 272 yards and four touchdowns, adding 5.5 tackles. [player_tooltip player_id='1418114' first='Braeden' last='Nees'] intercepted a pass, and [player_tooltip player_id='1418106' first='Bowen' last='Kruse'] recorded a team-best 6.0 tackles, five of which were solo. </p>

<p><strong>6. Western Dubuque (1-0) – </strong>The Hawks held off a game West Delaware outfit, 21-13, Friday. Seniors [player_tooltip player_id='1282223' first='Drew' last='Burds'] and David Theisen rushed 27 times for 210 yards and a touchdown. Burds' 10.0 tackles led a defense that also featured a two-interception game from Ben Wernimont. Zander Ehlers had six solo stops, and [player_tooltip player_id='1277238' first='Garret' last='Kluesner'] recorded a sack.</p>

<p><strong>7. Indianola (1-0) – </strong>Perhaps no Week 1 4A win impressed more than the one Indianola grabbed at 5A Urbandale Friday. Jake Pontier rushed 25 times for 141 yards and three touchdowns in the 21-17 victory. AJ Pontier paced the defense with 11.5 tackles, while Max Wedmore, August Anderson and Charlie Radosevich also played well on that side of the ball.</p>

<p><strong>8. North Polk (1-0) - </strong>The Comets escaped Friday's matchup against visiting Bondurant-Farrar, 42-41. Feldmann, Nathan Pitlock, Drew Figgins, Brady Reinhart and [player_tooltip player_id='1361539' first='Jakob' last='Phillips'] delivered big plays on defense. </p>
