Stock Up

Mt. Juliet Golden Bears

- The Golden Bears coasted through their 1st four games to a 4-0 start but finally saw a formidable opponent last Friday where they handled business with ease in their 38-21 win over Cookeville. It was an impressive game and showing from Mt. Juliet, who proved to be the class of their region and a team you can't sleep on when we reach postseason play. This is a well balanced ball club that is led by [player_tooltip player_id='219402' first='Tyler' last='Travers'], [player_tooltip player_id='219347' first='Jonmikael' last='Crudup'] and their offense but we can't dismiss their defense, which has been playing lights out since the beginning of the year.

Mt. Juliet may have one of the best secondaries in the state, spearheaded by seniors [player_tooltip player_id='1310658' first='Isaiah' last='Roseberry'], [player_tooltip player_id='1224014' first='Deon' last='Waller'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1472845' first='Tre' last='Redmond']. They allow guys like [player_tooltip player_id='250859' first='Atticus' last='Fiorita'] to disrupt the backfield due to their lockdown abilities. As we inch into the 2nd half of the season, the Golden Bears have a few big matchups looming with Antioch, Franklin and Green Hill with that last game versus the Hawks being for the region title. They must continue their strong play or one of those three games can get them but Mt. Juliet is playing at a high level right now that I wouldn't be surprised to see them undefeated as we go into playoff season.

(WR) [player_tooltip player_id='219345' first='Jaylen' last='Mosley'] - Jackson Christian

- Coming off a tough injury that ended his junior season, it was going to be interesting to see how Mosley came back to perform and so far in the 2024 season, the Eagles star player has been just fine! Defenses are continuing to have issues with Mosley due to his athletic skill set and his ability to make tough catches and big plays. So far on the season, Mosley has put up over 500 yards receiving while producing eight touchdowns. He has been stellar without showing any ramifications from his injury. It's curious right now to know that Mosley remains uncommitted and that might have been due to his injury but his film shows otherwise as this West TN product is healthy and playing at a high level.

Sequatchie Co. Indians

- This is how this article is supposed to work as a few weeks ago, Sequatchie Co. was on our “stock down” report but here we are weeks later and the Indians stock is rising! That is due to them upsetting previously small school top five ranked Marion Co., 13-10 in what was a program statement win for the Indians. After falling to Bledsoe Co. in the first game of the season, Sequatchie Co. has strung together four consecutive wins with last week being their most impressive. Defeating the Warriors shows that the Indians are legit and the team we thought they would be headed into the 2024 season.

The offense gets the limelight with senior [player_tooltip player_id='279486' first='Sam' last='Evitts'] leading the way but I feel it's been their defense that has righted the ship and put the Indians back on the right path. It's a solid defensive unit down in the Chattanooga area with [player_tooltip player_id='540022' first='Harrison' last='Smith'], [player_tooltip player_id='454466' first='Jack' last='Evitts'] and [player_tooltip player_id='904934' first='Kason' last='Hicks'] handling business up front with [player_tooltip player_id='1142019' first='Jackson' last='Tate'], [player_tooltip player_id='1142005' first='Austin' last='Griffith'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1144213' first='Gowan' last='Brown'] locking things down on the back end. This defense was excellent in last week's victory over Marion Co. where they quieted the play of Sam Pickett and put a plug in their run game. If the Indians defense can continue playing like they did in Week Five, the region title is not only achievable but going on a deep postseason run is possible as well.

(LB) [player_tooltip player_id='1206015' first='Joel' last='Lowenberg'] - Baylor

- We always have guys late in their recruiting process that go from the FCS or D1 level and play their way into Power Four status. Well Lowenberg looks to be one of those guys as recently the Red Raiders linebacker has landed offers from Houston and Wake Forest along with interest coming from many others. A big reason why new schools are getting involved is because Lowenberg has the look of a Power Four middle linebacker and he plays like one too. Currently committed to MTSU, Lowenberg may be looking past the Blue Raiders as I don't believe he has visited campus yet this Fall while many other commits have. Wake Forest throwing their hat in the ring does ramp things up as I wouldn't be surprised to see other Power Four schools get involved here very soon. Look for this Chattanooga area linebacker to continue watching his stock rise as these next few recruiting months roll along.

Memphis Central Warriors

- After taking it on the chin to Whitehaven in Game One this year, the Warriors have bounced back to win their next four contests with their defense being a force and cause for their 4-1 start. Over the past four games, the Warriors defense has allowed a total of 20 points. Their defensive front, led by senior [player_tooltip player_id='341252' first='Brycen' last='Boone'], has done a good job of stuffing the run game while the secondary is doing their job as well, keeping big plays to a minimum. Over on offense, the Warriors are performing strong there as well with senior [player_tooltip player_id='834585' first='Hays' last='Wright'] playing well at quarterback with him finding a go-to guy in [player_tooltip player_id='1598138' first='Andrus' last='Farmer']. They have put up 40 plus points over the last four games, showing how explosive they can be. It will be interesting to see if Wright and his offense can keep it up over the next few weeks as they take on some good teams like Southwind and Munford. I think their defense will remain constant but if the Warriors remain playing at a high level, the region title will certainly be in play.

‘26 (QB) [player_tooltip player_id='1467540' first='Elliott' last='Drapeau'] - McCallie

- It took a little time for Drapeau to get acclimated to his new surroundings at McCallie but he appears to be comfortable now as over the past few weeks, this lefty quarterback has been playing at a high level and putting up some strong numbers. Standing 6'4 195 pounds, Drapeau looks the part of a future college guy and he's starting to show that on the field with his recent play. What's standing out about the Canadian native is his decision making and accuracy. Drapeau has been throwing some dimes of late that show power and zip along with good timing that helps his receiver make plays after the catch.

Since being down here in Tennessee, Drapeau has yet to see his recruitment take off but I think that's due to coaches wanting to see how he performs down here in the states and how he performs next to and against top talent. Well through this early part of the season, I think Blue Tornado signal caller is proving he belongs and someone to watch for as a breakout star moving forward.

Whitehaven Tigers

- The biggest win of Week Five came from these Tigers, who went on the road to face the #PRZTN #2 team in the state, Houston and knocked off the Mustangs, 21-14 in what was a classic contest that went down to the wire. This was a massive win for the Tigers and their program growth as well as their hopes at winning the region title. The one constant in this game and what's been there all year is the Whitehaven defense. That side of the ball did a great job last week slowing down the Mustangs run game while keeping quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='816017' first='Chandler' last='Day'] in-check. They caused some turnovers too that proved to be difference makers.

Defeating the Mustangs was huge but Whitehaven must continue their strong play going forward as the challenges don't stop. They are in the driver seat for the region at 3-0 but they have huge games upcoming against Germantown, Collierville and Bartlett that will dictate a lot. I think this year's Tigers team is up for the battle as they appear to enjoy playing together along with guys stepping forward into starring roles, like [player_tooltip player_id='1431775' first='Christopher' last='Talley'] and [player_tooltip player_id='402564' first='Terrance' last='Whitley']. It will be interesting to see how the season plays out but for now, the Tigers are definitely watching their stock rise as a 6A contender.

Stock Down

Hardin Co. Tigers

- It appears to be a transitional year for the Tigers as they head into Week Six at 1-4 and 0-2 within their region. Coming off a 42-7 defeat to Jackson North-Side, the Tigers are looking for answers as things just haven't clicked this year and that was kind of expected after losing the best quarterback to ever come out of Hardin County but I didn't know it would be that big of a transition. We still have several weeks left in the season for this West TN program to turn things around enough to get into postseason play but it must start immediately at home this Friday versus Chester County.

Springfield Yellow Jackets

- Week Five was a war for the Yellow Jackets but they came up short, falling to Centennial 7-3 and moving to 2-3 as we reach Mid-season. Springfield sits one game under .500 but they have faced a tough schedule up to this point, facing the likes of Clarksville, Henry Co. and the Cougars last week. All three of those games have been single digit losses for the Yellow Jackets, so it's not like they are far off but they still have a losing record and an 0-1 start within their region. I don't think their stock is too down but with a tough region schedule remaining, it may be headed that way, unless they find a way to win in these close hard fought games.

- - -

West Ridge Wolves

- Expectations were high for the Wolves headed into the 2024 season but so far, they haven't lived up to the hype. Now all is not lost as West Ridge sits at 3-2 overall but they are 0-2 within their region and will have to play uphill to reach postseason play the remainder of the season. The expectations came from sporting a top ten ranked quarterback in [player_tooltip player_id='466230' first='Trey' last='Frazier'] but the offense has been inconsistent while the Wolves defense has virtually been the same.

The two times West Ridge faced good competition, they didn't show up. In games against Dobyns-Bennett and William Blount, the Wolves played well under par as the offense scored 13 points in both games while the defense allowed 42 and 53 points to the Indians and Govs. When the Wolves have competed against lesser competition, they have succeeded but that formula won't work come postseason time. They have several opportunities remaining to prove their worth with games against Science Hill, Jefferson Co., Tenn. High and Morristown-East. If they can perform better and pick up a few of those wins, the season won't be lost.
