Mayo continues to hold its place in the 6A ranks and gets a hard-fought win over Rosemount. Good win for the Spartans, who move to 2-2 on the season, and used an [player_tooltip player_id='945925' first='Ethan' last='Post'] 27-yard FG, a rushing TD from Isaac Peterson - who had 149 rushing yards on the day - as well as an [player_tooltip player_id='1583318' first='Isaiah' last='Beale'] rushing TD late in the 4th quarter to finish out the win.

Great to see the Royals continue to roll. After snapping their 29-game losing streak two Fridays ago against Eastview, the Royals put together another big-time win by besting the Burnsville Blaze 34-22 at Burnsville High School. [player_tooltip player_id='1522278' first='Jayden' last='Moore'], point guard of the basketball team and a high-major prospect on the hardcourt, had 5 catches for 146 yards and 2 TDs through the air. Aideyn Souvannarath had two interceptions for the Royals' defense as well.
Providence Academy 14, Mound Westonka 3

Huge news here out of a loaded 4A bracket, as Providence Academy grinds out a 14-3 victory over Mound Westonka, handing the White Hawks their first loss of the season. All of the scoring came in the 2nd quarter, when Lions QB Magnus Hansen found Matthew Hunter for a TD 47 seconds in the quarter, and followed it up with a Grant Sandell rushing TD later in the 2nd. Mound Westonka scored on a 25-yard FG in the middle of the quarter but were held scoreless the rest of the game. Both QBs threw two INTs, and Mound Westonka forced a fumble as well. You can bet your butt this was a physical contest.

The Wildcats are looking and playing like a real deal 6A contender in 2024, popping off their third win a row this past Thursday by downing Lakeville South 35-33. The high-scoring affair, which came down to South failing to convert a 2pt conversion after a [player_tooltip player_id='362278' first='Gaven' last='Dean'] TD around 2:30 left in the ball game, saw South's [player_tooltip player_id='234775' first='Connor' last='Cade'] rush 16 times for 115 yards and 2 TDs. Eagan senior QB [player_tooltip player_id='1582446' first='Brooklyn' last='Evans'] rushed 19 times for 204 yards and 3 TDs, sparking the Wildcat's 21-unanswered comeback in the second half. It was Eagan's first win over Lakeville South in 10 years. Get on the Eagan bandwagon before it's too late, folks!

I was lucky enough to attend this game in person for PrepRedzoneMN, and it was a fun one, with 5A #1 Elk River going down to an athletic and physical Andover squad itching to make some waves in Class 5A. A full recap of the game is available on the site, but Andover, who have a variety of pass catchers available, including Gophers commit [player_tooltip player_id='752525' first='Cameron' last='Begalle'], a Top 10 player in the state, were using a two QB system that really opened up under junior Joe Mapson. With some size and experience on defense, as well as length and physicality on the back end, the Huskies look like they are capable of going deep come playoff time. These two will see each other again in the Section 7AAAAA finals in around a month.

Best Games:

Minneapolis Washburn @ Minneapolis North

Best two teams in the old Minneapolis City Conference come to blows on Friday night. North is off and rolling after some early season tests, and they see a 5A school on Friday night in Washburn. The Millers have some size, and some returning experience, and could matchup well with the Polars, who get their WRs in space and let them do the work. However, both teams are tough, and there are some rivalry implications on the line as well. Good game to check out if you're within Minneapolis' boundaries.

Totino-Grace (#2 4A) @ Holy Angels

Another big test for both teams. Holy Angels should be ranked in Class 4A, and their only loss of the season came to 4A #1 Becker two weeks ago. Totino, now ranked #2 in Class 4A after taking down Hutchinson 21-20 two weeks ago and Benilde-St. Margaret's 42-7 last week, have top-end talent that's hard to match in the state, although Holy Angels would come close. Both teams have overcome some tough battles and are the better for it. Can't miss 4A battle going down in Richfield on Friday night.

Becker (#1 4A) @ Hutchinson (#8 4A)

Another big-time 4A contest, Becker is on the road to their toughest opponent so far in 2024, the Hutchinson Tigers. At 2-2, with losses to good teams in Totino and Rocori, the Tigers are still feisty, but Becker has shown they can win in tight games and are playing great team football right now. Has all the makings of a Top 10 matchup!

Eagan (#6 6A) @ Lakeville North (#1 6A)

6A upstart Eagan has its biggest test of the regular season, and possibly the entire 2024 season, this Friday night against Lakeville North, the #1 ranked team in Class 6A. The two teams have similar game plans, are similarly senior-heavy, and have both squeaked out tight, nail-biting victories in 2024. If Eagan is truly legit, this is going to be a heckuva ball game. Both teams are going to be fired up for this one.

Shakopee (#5 6A) @ Minnetonka (#3 6A)

A Top 5 6A matchup under big-time Friday Night Lights in Minnetonka, Two 4-0 Big School teams, who have big OLs and like to run the rock, are going to have a heavyweight slugfest on their hands in Week 5. Don't need a lot of hype for this contest, both Shakopee and Minnetonka have state title talent and aspirations and have a lot on the line in this midseason test. You won't want to miss this one, folks.

Mound Westonka (#9 4A) @ Orono (#3 4A)

Rounding things out with yet another 4A battle, this time with a Top 10 showdown between Mound Westonka and Orono. The White Hawks, coming off a tough loss to Providence Academy, are looking to rebound in impressive fashion, and have the biggest opportunity available in the #3 ranked Spartans. Orono is coming off their tightest win of the season last week, as Delano played them tough in a 21-14 slugfest, and if Mound Westonka can capitalize on what Delano saw and focused on, we could have an upset here. Two balanced offenses set to do battle in Orono tomorrow.
