Sophomore Joey O'Rourke did an admirable job in a shootout performance against West Central Valley, and in week 3 against Nodaway Valley, O'Rourke unleashed a monstrous performance against the Wolverines. O'Rourke finished 14 of 17 for 433 yards and 5 touchdowns, while adding 2 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown run. While O'Rourke faced some pressure in the pocket during the night, his timing, progressions, and quick decision-making helped enable the Mustangs to find openings in the passing game and burning the secondary after the catch. O'Rourke's leadership guided the Mustangs to their first win of the 2024 season, and he will look to steering the team in the right direction this year.

Grundy Center has now won their last 29 games in a row, and [player_tooltip player_id='1614184' first='Judd' last='Jirovsky'] has played a vital role in maintaining the school's winning streak. As the team steamrolled past Pella Christian in week 3, Jirovsky finished the game 11 of 14 for 188 yards and 3 touchdowns, while rushing for 24 yards on 6 carries and a touchdown. Jirovsky continues to show improvement in his progressions in reading the defense and shows increasing confidence commanding the Spartans' offense. Jirovsky has done extremely well so far to start the season, but he will have his first test in week 4 going against East Marshall, who is also 3-0.

South Hardin has started this season 3-0 for the first time since 2020, and the progression of Peyton Welch's play-style has played a significant factor in the team's hot start. Against Aplington-Parkersburg on Friday, Welch finished 10 of 12 for 186 yards and 4 touchdowns. Welch has become a more accurate passer this season with great touch and excellent reads that have allowed him to create plays against all three levels of the defense. South Hardin has a bright year ahead with Welch under center.

Speaking of strong starts, Regina Catholic is sitting at 3-0 and is building themselves as contenders for the state championship this season, and a big reason for their strong start is thanks to the leadership of junior [player_tooltip player_id='1657101' first='Kyle' last='Tracy']. Against Mediapolis, Tracy finished 14 of 17 for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns while adding 15 carries for 60 yards and a rushing touchdown. Tracy has one of the best deep-balls in the state, and that cannon arm showcased itself on a series of big throws that Tracy made on Friday night that helped maintain an edge over Mediapolis. Tracy shows impressive accuracy on tight seams and also is a viable scrambler. The Regals will continue to ride strong in 2024 through Tracy's athletic ability and leadership.

Grand View Christian is another team that has sprinted out of the gates to a 3-0 start. [player_tooltip player_id='1100526' first='Judah' last='Lock']'s continued poise and improving aerial attack has been the primary catalyst for the Thunder's offense. Against Southwest Valley in week 3, Lock finished 18 of 29 for 286 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 2 INTs, while adding 4 carries for 24 yards. Lock's quick zip on his passes and excellent delivery was on full display as he showed great accuracy and was not afraid in taking chances down the field, which paid off throughout the night. Lock is looking every bit like a top QB in this state, and there doesn't seem to be any signs of slowing down any time soon for the Thunder with Lock leading the way.

Cascade has already matched their win total from last season as they start the season 2-1. Mick Hoffman, who has stepped up as the starting QB this year for the Cougars has done a nice job managing the offense, and he had a breakout performance in week 3 against Monticello, finishing 15 of 22 for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns while adding 13 carries for 30 yards. Hoffman did a great job throwing under pressure throughout the night, and he did a great job setting hitting 50-50 passes down the field. Hoffman also was used a lot running up through the line on QB draws, and did a solid job gaining short-yardage. Cascade is trending in the right direction this year and Hoffman could end up developing as a strong leader in the pocket.

[player_tooltip player_id='1242840' first='Talan' last='Fuson'] is one of the top DBs in the state, but he's also held his own as a solid signal-caller for Woodward-Granger's offense. Fuson was explosive in week 3 against Interstate 35, finishing the game 8 of 11 for 213 yards and 3 touchdowns, while adding 13 carries for 88 yards. Watching him in the pocket, Fuson has a tall, commanding presence, but he's shown exceptional athleticism as a dynamic scrambler. As a passer, Fuson has shown glimpses of excellent timing and a great arm which allowed him to make big plays against the secondary. Fuson is a two-way standout that will keep the Hawks on the hunt for a playoff berth throughout this season.
