Stock Up (Week One)

BGA Wildcats

- People around this state better start getting to know about these Wildcats because they are legit and after Friday night, their state championship chances definitely went up. BGA took it to Knox. Webb in Week One by defeating the Spartans, 68-41 in what was a statement win for the Cats. This 2024 team showed upside to develop into one of the more explosive offenses in the state, led by a quarterback we will talk about below, a talented receiving corps with [player_tooltip player_id='1002764' first='Arnett' last='Hayes, Jr'], [player_tooltip player_id='1230849' first='Locke' last='Kennedy'], [player_tooltip player_id='1030085' first='Maximus' last='Curry'] and others along with an offensive line that may be better than I thought.

The defense was impressive too. I know they allowed 41 points but a good chunk of that came early in the contest (Game 1 Jitters) and deep in the 4th quarter when the outcome was sealed. BGA could have the best linebacking corps in the D2-Class AA ranks with [player_tooltip player_id='914552' first='ElGee' last='Webster'], [player_tooltip player_id='1103031' first='Elijah' last='Fernandez'], [player_tooltip player_id='1206233' first='Jack' last='Gregg'], [player_tooltip player_id='1104269' first='Park' last='Ballash'] and [player_tooltip player_id='902961' first='Jayden' last='Cannon']. The secondary is legit too. There are a lot of pieces on this squad that screams championship potential. Their stock is certainly up at the moment but the Wildcats must maintain it moving forward.

‘26 (QB) [player_tooltip player_id='914547' first='Kaedyn' last='Marable'] - BGA

- What a season debut this junior Mid-Tennessee signal caller had in his team's rout win over Knox. Webb. Marable did just about everything for his Wildcats offense as he threw for over 280 yards while producing 6 total touchdowns, three on the ground and three through the air. Going into the 2024 season, Marable was a guy on my radar with the potential to reach the college stage but wasn't sure which level. His performance Friday evening showed that he could make it to the D1 platform with continued development and work in the weight room.

What I liked most about Marable was his calm, poised presence, especially when being rushed and chased outside the pocket. He made some outstanding throws on the night that showed good power and zip on his passes along with accuracy and nice ball placement. His work against the Spartans definitely pushed his stock up higher but Marable must continue his consistency and string together more performances like this one.

Christian Brothers Purple Wave

- The Purple Wave kicked off the 2024 season last Thursday evening by making a statement in their 41-0 beatdown of White Station. It was an impressive showing from Christian Brothers and one I didn't see coming. I will be honest by saying I felt like the Spartans were the better team and would take the win but I was definitely wrong. The Purple Wave were the better coached team and the team that did all the small things right in order to dominate their opponent.

It was a well balanced performance too with their offense moving the ball efficiently and scoring at will while their defense was physical and swarming. Quarterback Cole Frasure was steady as can be on offense and a nice leader that could win a bunch of ball games this year. I think the defense however may be the key to winning ball games, so keep an eye on the Purple Wave throughout the season as they may continue to be the surprise of the D2-Class AAA ranks.

(RB) [player_tooltip player_id='1110699' first='Skylan' last='Smith'] - Covington

- Smith has done nothing but produce at a high level ever since he stepped on the field two years ago and last Friday night in the Chargers 35-0 win over Munford, he continued that production by running for 230 yards and five touchdowns against the Cougars. It was a stellar performance versus a 5A opponent and a defense that has a D1 committed prospect that definitely boosted his stock in my eyes and probably several collegiate coaches too.

This guy runs hard every time he touches the ball but he is also fast too. Smith showed that against the Cougars where they had a hard time slowing him down and on several occasions, he would break the big one. Before the season started, we had Smith pegged as a top contender for 3A Mr. Football and that prediction looks legit after his opening night performance. Look for more big time games out of this West TN product, who will continue to boost his college stock as well.

Oliver Springs Bobcats

- Did anybody see the Bobcats taking down the reigning 1A state champs in Week One? I know I didn't and I'm sure many others didn't as well. This is the kind of performance and win that can turn some heads while also putting Oliver Springs on the map as a legit team to watch the remainder of the season. The biggest thing that stands out is the Bobcats defense and them shutting down an athletic South Pitt offense. They allowed seven points on the night and made things difficult for the Pirates in the red zone. Their offense had a solid performance as well as they kept possession most of the night with a well balanced rushing attack. There is much more to learn about Oliver Springs but they definitely made a big impression in Week One.

(QB/Ath) [player_tooltip player_id='1102967' first='Tripp' last='Pinion'] - White Co.

- Pinion kicked off his 5A Mr. Football campaign in a big way last Friday in his team's 42-17 win over Silverdale where this Mid-TN product of course did damage with his legs but also with his arm as well. Over the last several years, Pinion has been known for his running abilities and speed but he let his arm shine against the Seahawks where he was 15-16 passing for 239 yards and two touchdowns. That's one of the best passing performances Pinion has had throughout his high school career and maybe a sign of more to come.

While his passing looks certainly improved, the Warriors senior athlete was still hard to stop running the football. He carried it 14 times for 104 yards and one touchdown versus Silverdale, proving to be one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the state. All this guy does is compete and produce, so I'm not surprised by this performance. I expect even bigger games going forward and a definite march towards becoming a finalist for that 5A Mr. Football.

(WR) [player_tooltip player_id='390641' first='Aja' last='Jones'] - Marshall Co.

- Going up against a 5A opponent on opening night, Jones stood tall as he was a major factor behind Marshall County's close 25-22 victory over Columbia Central. The Tigers senior playmaker had a great opening performance that was definitely needed and his pick six on defense might have been the difference. Jones is a natural athlete that used those skills to pick off the Lions passer and take it back to the house without anyone close to stopping him. It was a huge play that proved to be the score to seal the deal. His play on offense was equally as important where Jones hauled in 7 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns on the night. This guy is already on the college radar but continued performances like this one may bring in bigger schools.

Stock Down (Week One)

South Pittsburg Pirates

- Did we miss on the Pirates? Is South Pittsburg overrated this year? I'm not completely sure about that but after game one, I don't know if the Pirates are as good as I and others though they may be. South Pitt took it on the chin last Friday when they fell to Oliver Springs, 27-7 in what was one of the biggest surprises from the opening weekend. From the looks of things, South Pitt struggled to move the ball and could not find any consistency throughout the contest. Their defense did ok by keeping them in the game for a time but even they struggled to slow down the Bobcats.

This next game against Franklin Co. will be interesting to watch to see if the Pirates can show something different, show something that resembles a championship caliber program. Their opponent in the Rebels struggled themselves, so South Pitt should bounce back but leaks were seen, deficiencies were taken advantage of, so things must get fixed if the Pirates want to defend their 1A title.

Sequatchie Co. Indians

- All the hype for the Indians leading into the 2024 season went out the window last Friday night when Sequatchie Co. fell to Bledsoe Co., 23-13. This was a game and a score I didn't see coming as I felt the Indians were the better team but that proves that everything on paper does not come true in reality. I know for a fact the Indians players and staff are disappointed in this performance and are ready to get back on the field to make things right. I'm curious to see how they respond this week as Sequatchie Co. still has big aspirations for this season but they can't go on a losing streak.

Oak Ridge Wildcats

- The Wildcats stock is down after their 34-31 loss to Jefferson Co. but just by a little bit. I'm still bullish on Oak Ridge but I gotta admit that I expected them to beat Jefferson Co. and show a little more on the defensive side of the ball. The Wildcats received an excellent offensive performance, scoring 31 points against the Patriots with outstanding showings from [player_tooltip player_id='205650' first='Blaine' last='Stansberry'] and [player_tooltip player_id='331829' first='Will' last='Pressley'] but their defense had holes and allowed a big rushing night from Jefferson Co.

The front seven was an area for Oak Ridge that I saw as not a weakness but a unit that wasn't as strong as last year. That showed on Friday night. The Cats do have a stud in Tobja Walters but others must step forward to help and provide a better play in the trenches. I still think this is a region title contender and a team that can go deep in the playoffs but things on defense must get fixed.

Knox. Webb Defense

- Headed into their opening game against BGA, I knew the Spartans defense would be different after losing several key starters from last year but I didn't know they would miss those guys as much as they do. Knox. Webb does have two stars on defense in [player_tooltip player_id='402563' first='Shavar' last='Young, Jr'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1269174' first='Hal' last='Niendorff'] but the rest of the Spartans defense is virtually new and it showed against the Wildcats.

From the 1st quarter all the way to the final whistle, BGA scored at will, doing so both on the ground and through the air. The front seven got blown off the ball most of the night by the Cats O-line and their receivers did a lot of damage, especially deep down the field. Now this was just game one and they have nine to go, so things can definitely change over the coming weeks but right now, things don't look too good on defense for Knox. Webb.

Cane Ridge Ravens

- For many years in the greater Nashville area, Cane Ridge was at the top but now it appears they are taking a dive. Last year was rough and the 2024 season may be the same, especially after taking it on the chin against Mt. Juliet in their 50-0 loss to the Golden Bears. It was a tough evening for the Ravens where nothing went right on either side of the ball. Now mind you, Mt. Juliet is good and a region title contender but 50-0 is certainly unacceptable by anyone closely involved with the Cane Ridge program. Plenty of teams in the past have laid a stinker in game one and bounced back but these Ravens must get on the ball soon as they have a tough schedule ahead of them, starting this week with Ravenwood.
