We can't put ourselves in the shoes of the McLoud players and coaches but we have to think that they are very ready to get back on the field and start a new season. In 2023, for the second straight year, the Redskins would finish the year with a 5-5 record. But more importantly, they would go 4-3 in district play. And in most situations, that 4-3 record is good enough to punch your ticket to the playoffs. But McLoud was in a three-way tie with Kingfisher and North Rock Creek for the three seed and four seed. And unfortunately for the Redskins, based on the district points tiebreaker, they were the one left out of the postseason. McLoud started the year 1-2 but won their first two district contests, including a 21-16 win over North Rock Creek. McLoud would fall to Metro Christian, Kingfisher and Perkins-Tryon. And all three losses were by 15 points or more and those 15 point losses stacked up and hurt the Redskins in the tiebreaker scenario. McLoud was good enough to make it to the playoffs but they came up just short. The close district wins just couldn't be as close as they were and the Redskins are looking forward to a fresh start and leaving no doubt and nothing up to chance when it comes to their playoff spot. In 2024, they'll look to finish off what they started in 2023.

2024 OUTLOOK

When you look at what's ahead for McLoud in 2024, the term “unfinished business” comes to mind and a lot of the players from last year's team are returning, looking to finish the job and punch their ticket to the playoffs. The Redskins are bringing back seven starters on the offensive side of the ball and the strength of this unit will start with the offensive line. They bring back everyone up front and several guys have multiple years of starting experience. That's going to give McLoud and their roster of skill players a leg up during the season. McLoud's coaches are very high on the depth that they have built on the line of scrimmage. And the Redskins have some playmakers that you need to be aware of, specifically in the backfield at quarterback and on the outside at wide receiver. Defensively, the Redskins bring back eight starters on that side of the ball and it's hard to imagine that this unit won't take another step forward in 2024. And when you look at the roster and the names that they bring back, you see guys who played at high levels throughout the 2023 season and made some of the more clutch plays in big wins during district play. The Redskins find themselves in a new district as only two district opponents are carryovers from last year. If McLoud can finish the season strong, they should be in a spot to make it to the postseason in what should be a very competitive and wide open Class 3A.

We mentioned earlier in the preview how the strength of McLoud's offense would come from the line of scrimmage, considering the experience they have returning up front. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1359025' first='Camden' last='Mendenhall'] might be the most experienced of the bunch as a three-year starter at guard. Mendenhall will be the vet of vets on this offensive line that is incredibly deep with experience. So as we look ahead to the 2024 season, it wouldn't surprise us if the McLoud offense took a massive leap forward and in order for them to be successful, it has to start up front on the line of scrimmage. We're looking forward to seeing what kind of impact Mendenhall and company have up front.

At this time last year, [player_tooltip player_id='935020' first='Shaun' last='Hill'] had just moved and became a part of the McLoud football program. He is incredibly dynamic when he's on the field and he proved that at different times throughout the 2023 season. You just look at the production he had last season and wonder what could be next with a full season. Hill was productive in the passing and running game and was also a playmaker at wide receiver. He then turned around and brought that production to the defensive side of the ball. So now that we know what kind of versatility he brings to the field, there isn't much that he is not able to do and he could end up being one of the more productive players in 3A football this fall.

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='587295' first='Zaylun' last='Matlock'] returns to McLoud and we mean that in a literal sense. Earlier this offseason, it looked like Matlock was moving to a different district nearby but he's back and expected to pick up where he left off last season. And Matlock was incredibly productive for the Redskins last season. Matlock emerged in 2023 as McLoud's leading receiver as a sophomore and it wasn't particularly close. He had a strong freshman season in 2022 and took the next step last fall. Now, we're looking forward to seeing him take another step towards being the top receiver in Class 3A. Last season, he had over 500 yards and five touchdowns and is hungry for more.

2024 SCHEDULE/GAMES TO CIRCLE

Sept. 6th - Harrah
- The Redskins will open up the 2024 football season at home against Harrah and this has been a very back and forth series. You always have to circle the season opener for a new year and this season is no different. Harrah got the best of McLoud last season and they expect to contend for a playoff spot in 2024. McLoud won the 2022 meeting and that back and forth style is the norm. When you look at the last ten match-ups, it's completely even. Both teams are 5-5 in the last ten meetings.
Sept. 13th - Bethel
Sept. 20th - AT Tecumseh
Sept. 27th - Mannford
Oct. 4th - AT Sulphur
- We'll reach the halfway point of the 2024 regular season in week five and it's the biggest game of the year for the Redskins. They'll hit the road to face a Sulphur team that is ranked in the top five of our Class 3A preseason rankings. McLoud has hopes of making it to the playoffs and if they were to stun the Bulldogs on the road here, they would then be considered one of the favorites for the district crown. Sulphur brings back almost everyone so it will be a big test for McLoud in week five.
Oct. 10th - Victory Christian
Oct. 17th - AT Seminole
Oct. 25th - Bristow
Nov. 1st - AT Lone Grove
Nov. 8th - AT Perkins-Tryon
- By the time week ten rolls around, McLoud is going to know exactly what they need to do in order to make it to the playoffs. In fact, the final two road games are going to be make or break for the Redskins to keep their playoff hopes alive. Perkins-Tryon would win the district title a year ago but the district is completely different and they lost a lot of experience to graduation. For the Redskins, it will feel like the playoffs started once they got to November. Take care of business in the final two weeks and they should be in.

NOTABLE

After the way the 2023 season ended for McLoud, the Redskins are hungrier than ever to not only make the playoffs, but make some noise once they get there. We've told the story of McLoud coming up short in the three-way tie, but if McLoud makes it to the playoffs in 2024, it will be the first time they've earned their way in since 2016. They made the 2020 playoffs but that was the Covid-impacted season where everyone could participate in the playoffs. McLoud isn't going to be satisfied with just making it to the playoffs, they want to win when it matters most. They haven't won in the playoffs in nearly two decades. They've lost in the first round in their last six playoff appearances. In fact, the Redskins have just two playoff wins in program history and they are determined to start winning at a consistent level. They have been taking steps towards winning at that consistent pace but they still have to take that next step this fall.
