The Westmoore Jaguars had a memorable 2023 season but things are going to look completely different in 2024. The Jaguars opened the season with a 1-2 record in non-district play and things were not looking the best. But things turned around in district play and they turned around in a big way. Following their 1-2 start, Westmoore would rattle off four straight victories. That included a close rivalry win over Moore and then one of the biggest victories in 6A-1 last season. In week five, Westmoore would go on the road and knock off Jenks 16-12. The Trojans would go on to play for the state championship and west side programs just haven't done well on the road in Jenks. They followed up the win over Jenks with wins over Broken Arrow and Enid. After back to back losses to Bixby and Norman North, the Jaguars would wrap up the regular season with a win over rival Southmoore. The Jaguars were firmly in the playoffs and would get a first round win over Mustang. Once again, the Jaguars would play in a game that went down to the wire and they came out on top. They faced Union in the quarterfinals and for the second time in 2023, the Redhawks would beat the Jaguars. The 2023 season came to an end with a 7-5 record. But overall, it felt like a very successful season. And that's why what happened in early December definitely caught a lot of people off guard.

2024 OUTLOOK

Westmoore will have a new head coach as David White takes over the Jaguar program going into 2024. Despite going 7-5, Lorenzo Williams was let go as head coach of the Jaguars in early December. That decision definitely came as a surprise but White has taken the ball and run with it. He's assembled a very respectable staff and despite Westmoore losing almost all of their starters from last year, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Jaguars back in the mix in Class 6A-1. But it will definitely be an uphill battle as Westmoore brings back only two starters on both sides of the ball. And Westmoore will definitely feel that the most on the offensive side of the ball and specifically with the quarterback position. Last season, the Jaguars had a legitimate star at the quarterback position that could change the game in the blink of an eye. This season, Westmoore has some firepower on the offensive side of the ball but it's going to look very different. The defense also brings back just two starters from last year's team. Another storyline to follow this season will be Westmoore in close games. Overall, the Jaguars played in four games that were decided by seven points or less. And fortunately for the Jaguars, they would go 4-0 in those games. If they can have that kind of success in the close games for a second straight season, they will be in a good position by the time the playoffs roll around in November.

We already wrote about senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='936775' first='Jaylan' last='Woody'] this month during the Midwest City preview. Shortly after publishing, we found out that Woody had transferred to Westmoore. The Jaguars get a very explosive running back that can end up being the workhorse of this Westmoore offense. When Coach White talked about the potential of this year's team, he circled the running back position as one of importance and adding a player like Woody is a big get. Woody ran for nearly 1,000 yards last season with the Bombers and will be an impact player right away. He's a strong running back that think is flying under the radar right now statewide.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1350856' first='Joseph' last='Coffey'] is one of the returning starters from last year's team and he's ready to take his game to another level this fall. Coffey is listed as an offensive lineman and defensive lineman on Westmoore's roster. We're excited to see the potential of Coffey on the defensive line specifically and what kind of impact he can have this season. Because Westmoore doesn't have that much experience returning from last year's team, having a player like Coffey is definitely going to be a premium for the Jaguars along the line of scrimmage. Coffey is a new player on our radar but we're excited to see what he ends up being for the Jaguars this fall.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1192547' first='Tre' last='Lewis'] is in a very similar position to Coffey. The Jaguars bring back several seniors that are ready to take the next step this fall. When we look at Westmoore's roster, Lewis is listed as a quarterback, defensive back and then just as an athlete. We like that description for Lewis and the Jaguars had a lot of success with an athletic quarterback that also started for them as a defensive back with Graham last season. Not many can match his production on both sides of the ball but if Lewis can produce even half of what Graham had last season, he will be a breakout star in Class 6A-1. The word “potential” comes up a lot when we think about Lewis.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='268317' first='Vidal' last='Ortiz II'] is back at Westmoore after spending his junior season at Choctaw. This season, Ortiz has the potential to be a versatile athlete that the Jaguars will be able to use on both sides of the ball. Ortiz could end up playing tight end or wide receiver on the offensive side of the ball. And then on defense, we've seen Ortiz lining up as an outside linebacker and using his length and overall athleticism to cause problems for opponents. Ortiz is a 2025 prospect that has camped with us a few times and impressed us every time we watched him up close. Now, he gets to close out his high school career with what he is hoping is a big 2024 season.

Aug. 30th - AT Moore
- The annual Moore War kicks off the season for the Jaguars and Westmoore will look to continue their dominance over the Lions. Last season, they won an exciting 37-33 contest with Moore. That was their second win in a row after a lengthy winning streak against Moore was snapped in 2021. And this match-up also returns to non-district action after this was a district game in 2022 and 2023. A rivalry win for a young team under a first year head coach would be a great way to start the season.
Sept. 6th - Southmoore
Sept. 20th - AT Mustang
Sept. 27th - AT Yukon
- District play will open up in week four and the Jaguars will hit the road for the second straight week. They'll visit Yukon and this game will be incredibly important. Six teams from each district will make the playoffs and the Jaguars can't afford to lose this game or their backs will already be against the wall. It's only the first week of district play but the Jaguars will need to be ready to go when district play begins. This game is once again a district game after two seasons of meeting in non-district play.
Oct. 4th - Norman North
Oct. 11th - AT Owasso
Oct. 17th - Edmond Santa Fe
Oct. 25th - AT Edmond Memorial
Nov. 1st - Union
Nov. 8th - Broken Arrow
- By the time week ten rolls around, Westmoore is going to know exactly where they are in the district standings and know what they need to do to secure a playoff spot or even better with a higher seed. Westmoore will host a Broken Arrow team that will definitely have this game circled on the schedule. Last season, for the first time ever, the Jaguars handed the Tigers a loss. Westmoore will get Broken Arrow at home and with a win here, they will all but lock up a playoff spot and be in a better position for a higher seed.

NOTABLE

Westmoore made quite a bit of history in 2023 and what's crazy is that they did it in back to back weeks. In week five, they beat Jenks 16-12 on the road and it was just their second win over the Trojans with the first one coming all the way back in 2002. That was enough to grab headlines but as if that wasn't enough, the following week they beat Broken Arrow 42-35 and that was their first ever win over the Tigers. One win would be a memorable victory but to get two of them and to do it in back to back weeks, that made Westmoore's 2023 season a very successful one. Now, with the Jaguars switching districts, they now have three opportunities to get wins over the Tulsa area's “big five” schools as they'll face Owasso in week six and then Union in week nine and Broken Arrow again in week ten. If Westmoore makes more history this season, the 2024 season will be just as memorable.
