Metro Christian's 2023 season was one of reloading after they made a run to the 2022 Class 3A state championship game. The Patriots lost a special senior class and we knew that they would look a little different last season. Despite having new faces everywhere, the Patriots would finish the season with an 8-3 record and punch their ticket to the playoffs once again. Metro Christian started the season with a 3-2 mark after losing to Poteau and district foe Perkins-Tryon. The loss to Perkins-Tryon would put the Patriots in second place in the district but they would lock that spot in by running the table, winning five straight games to close out the regular season with an 8-2 mark. The Patriots were beaten in the first round by Marlow as they fell in an upset at home. The defense was going to be the strength of this Metro Christian team and it played out that way as they gave up just 13.9 points per game. The Patriots only had three starters returning on the offensive side of the ball but they still averaged right around 30 points per game. Metro Christian now turns their attention to the 2024 season. For the second straight year, the Patriots will have a first-year starter at the quarterback position, but there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about Metro Christian and where they stack up with the rest of their class.

2024 OUTLOOK

First off, the Patriots now find themselves back in Class 2A with a drop down from 3A to the brand new Class 2A-1. But more on that later on in the preview. The biggest reason why the Patriots are back to being considered serious contenders within their class is the depth and experience they have on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Seven starters return on the offensive side of the ball but the strength will definitely come from the offensive line. The Patriots will be working in a new starter at quarterback but he will benefit from an offensive line unit that will be one of the best in Class 2A-1 this season. They are experienced, talented and have plenty of size up front to be a dominant force on that side of the ball. While the quarterback gets comfortable within the offense, they'll lean on that offensive line and the speed they have at the skill positions. On defense, they bring back eight starters off a unit that gave up a little over ten points per game last season. This unit has the potential to be very good this season. And just like on offense, the strength is going to come on the line of scrimmage as a lot of those standout offensive linemen will turn around and do the same thing on the defensive side of the ball. And when you look at Metro Christian's schedule this season, the Patriots should be the favorite within their district and while they'll be challenged early on, they should also win a lot of games this fall. And that will put them in position, when the playoffs roll around, to make a run. This is a team that is hungry to make it back to Edmond and they have a team that could power their way to UCO.

We've written a lot about Metro Christian's offensive line already and they have several players that could be featured here. We're going with senior offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='898348' first='Jake' last='Campbell'] as he is going to end up being one of the more experienced players on the Metro Christian roster this season. Campbell will anchor the offensive line and it shouldn't be overlooked what he can do on the defensive side of the ball. Campbell is a good-looking offensive lineman and he can do a lot of things really well. He has size, power but he can also move. This offensive line has the chance to be pretty special and with that, Campbell has the potential to have a special senior year.

Metro Christian has had a very good history at the quarterback position. They are one of the programs in Oklahoma that seem to always have a solid quarterback, year after year. Junior signal caller [player_tooltip player_id='1292050' first='Kincayde' last='Eng'] appears to be the next guy up for the Patriots. We caught Eng momentarily this spring at one of the team camps and he certainly passed the eye test. And as we've mentioned a few times, Eng is going to definitely benefit from having a strong offensive line in front of him. As Eng gets more comfortable in this Metro Christian offense, it wouldn't be crazy to see him end up being one of the top quarterbacks in Class 2A-1 this season.

We mentioned how the Patriots are confident in the skill positions because of the speed they have returning. Junior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1161909' first='Ty' last='Guest'] is one of the players to keep an eye on in that department. We've had a chance to see Guest in action at one of our camps earlier this year and he was a name that we thought could have a big 2024 season. Guest is one of several receivers to keep an eye on as the Patriots work Eng into the lineup at quarterback. Guest has speed and hands to end up having a breakout season. If the Patriots are as explosive as they could be this fall, don't be surprised if it's Guest that ends up emerging as one of their top playmakers.

Aug. 30th - AT Chisholm
Sept. 13th - Cascia Hall
- After getting a bye week following the season opener, Metro Christian will open up the home schedule against Cascia Hall. And the Commandos will be one of the top teams in Class 3A this season so this could end up being the toughest test of the 2024 regular season. Despite these schools only being about five miles away from one another, this is the first time they've met in the regular season in nearly two decades. With a win here, Metro Christian will gain a ton of momentum.
Sept. 20th - NOAH
Sept. 27th - AT Dewey
Oct. 4th - Chandler
Oct. 10th - AT Sperry
- In week six, Metro Christian will enter the second half of the regular season and it will feature a road test against Sperry. Both Chandler and Sperry are highly thought of by other coaches in the class so this back to back stretch will go a long way in deciding playoff seeding and perhaps much more. The Patriots will go on the road to face a Pirate team that isn't that far removed from winning double digit games and contending for state titles on a regular basis.
Oct. 17th - Central
Oct. 25th - AT Westville
Nov. 1st - Webster
Nov. 8th - Tahlequah Sequoyah
- In the final game of the regular season, Metro Christian will host Tahlequah Sequoyah and the Patriots will know exactly what they need in terms of playoff seeding. They could be in a position where they've already locked up the district title or they could need this game to do just that. They host a Sequoyah team that had a remarkable turnaround last season. The Indians went 0-9 in 2021 and 1-9 in 2022. Last fall, they would go 8-4 and have a lot of momentum heading into 2024.

NOTABLE

Metro Christian now finds themselves back in Class 2A and it looks a little different starting this season. Classes 2A, A and B have all split into two divisions and the Patriots will be playing in Division 1, featuring the larger schools in Class 2A. But up until a few months ago, that was not supposed to be the case. This year is a new cycle for classes and districts and the Patriots found themselves remaining in Class 3A but in a new district and they probably would have been the favorite there. But in April, several Oklahoma City private schools won a lawsuit that forced an unexpected redistricting shuffle just four months before the 2024 season kicked off. With the recent shuffle, the Patriots dropped down to Class 2A-1 and other than the opponents, not much else changes. The expectations were going to be high for Metro Christian if they stayed in Class 3A and they remain high now. Either way, they are one of the top teams to watch this fall.
