Continue ReadingRanking the top Freshmen QBs in all of Section VI is challenging. All of these players were on JV last season and most of which are still one year away from starting on the Varsity level. But here are the 1st year Gunslingers that caught my eye this past season.
Jayden Hassett Jayden Hassett 5’7″ | 145 lbs | QB Orchard Park | 2027 NY is a dual threat QB with good arm strength. He is quick and dangerous in the open field when he takes off. As a thrower, he can rollout very well and set his feet with exemplary technique. He has one more year to learn under starting Orchard Park QB, Brady Ciano Brady Ciano 6’0″ | 170 lbs | QB Orchard Park | 2025 NY but Hassett has shown he can command an offense and may be a player to look out for in his Junior season.
Kole Szratter
Kole Szratter
Of everyone on this list, Kole Szratter may be the most varsity ready. The opportunity is there as Depew’s starting QB last year is graduating and Kole has the talent to take to the next level. He makes good reads and has adequate accuracy He is not the run first type but can scramble and make something out of nothing. He is tough and not afraid to take the hits. It is really up to Szratter if he is putting in the offseason work to capitalize on this chance to play varsity.
Sam Watkins
Sam Watkins
Sam Watkins has the prototypical size to play QB, especially as freshman but I will say he is more of an athlete that can do a little bit of everything. He has experience as a WR and OLB where he may get pulled up to varsity to play next season. As a QB, he shows extraordinary athleticism but he is always looking for running lanes. This is a player to watch for next season but at what position, we will have to wait and see.
Kyle Kuhns
Kyle Kuhns
Kyle Kuhns has a quick release and can put the ball where only his receiver can get it. He will need to work on setting his feet but he has displayed superb arm strength even when he throws off his back foot. Kuhns can certainly thread the needle. The starting QB position at Starpoint may be up for grabs and Kyle Kuhns looks to be in the mix.
Brayden Plath
Brayden Plath
Brayden Plath is an intriguing prospect. He can see the field as a whole and he goes through his read progressions very well. Plath has good footwork and can throw on the run. He is versatile and shows excellent awareness in the pocket. Sweet Home’s starting QB spot is secured with All-State and All-WNY selection, Rocco Panepinto Rocco Panepinto 6’4″ | 185 lbs | QB Sweet Home | 2025 State NY so one more year on JV would be extremely beneficial for Plath. He is a Quarterback to look for in 2025.
Anthony Martis
Anthony Martis
There isn’t much film on Anthony Martis but from what I did see, Martis is an accurate passer and has good concentration. He can stay in the pocket to deliver a strike as well as a sixth sense to dodge rushers. Williamsville East’s starting QB from last season is returning but at 6′ and the time to build on his 150 lb frame, Anthony Martis can push for reps.
Philip Gangi
Philip Gangi
Philip Gangi has a strong arm and quick release. He stays cool under pressure. He is a good pocket passer but will take off if the situation calls for it. He may get sent up to varsity to play either QB or LB but depending on his offseason work, we will see the progress he has made.
