They have size, power, and the type of get off that seems almost impossible for kids at their size. These studs play on the interior and off the edge. Today we are going to narrow it down to the underclassmen in Illinois. These kids are going to be must know recruits, so get on them early.
Gavin is an edge defender to have on your radars. The sophomore is already up to 6’3″ 220 lbs. We see him rushing from a two point stance of the edge. Gavin has a solid first step off the ball and consistently uses his hands to keep separation. Off that separation the sophomore wins with lateral agility to slip around OTs/TEs. Neil plays with a high motor and makes the effort plays like chase down plays. Take a look at the young athlete’s tape.

We slide inside for this next athlete to know. Emmett is a freshman DT who was able to work his way onto the varsity roster. Making a varsity impact at DT as a freshman is probably the toughest thing to do at this level. It requires physicality, mental toughness, and athleticism to just survive. Emmett is able to thrive. The 6’1″ 235 lbs DT has the stout anchor strength to hold the line against double teams. He springs off the line and can shoot through gaps when his man pulls away from him to blow up plays. The freshman is showing a knack for disrupting the backfield even if he doesn’t get to the ball. He plays with his hands, is very tough, and doesn’t quit on plays. This is a name to know for several years to come.

Cornell is an exciting edge rusher. The burst off the line is what you need in a college prospect. He does a great job of using his length to his advantage and turning that burst into power on contact. Power to bull rush, collapse the pocket, and shed blocks. Cornell has the speed to close quickly on the QB, especially if the OL doesn’t get hands on him. Despite his lean frame, McIntosh does a great job of playing with strength when setting the edge. He is developing a well rounded game of an edge defender. Check out the film.
The 6’3″ 220 lbs sophomore is putting together an impressive skill set. He has a frame that is developing the power needed to dominate the edges where he has to set the edge against the run and bull rush OTs. He plays with solid technique, landing accurate hand placement. He also has some lateral shake to him when disengaging or making OTs miss. We also see the flash of a closing burst when he gets free of the OL. The tools are coming together into one impressive prospect. Keep an eye on this kid.
