This article we are going to be highlighting some big bodied TE’s making life easier for their quarterback, and making life a nightmare for defenses!
Jake is a big bodied target at 6’6 and over 200lbs. He’s a physical kid, playing both TE and DE, and he utilizes his size well. In the passing game, I think he is a bit raw but shows some good flashes. He isn’t the cleanest route runner, but he runs them well enough to get separation and uses his size to come down with the ball. Blocking wise, he does a good job of staying low and driving, and doesn’t let guys off easily. I know he works hard off the field, and is a multi-sport athlete, so I think the potential is there to take a big step up for Unity Christian this fall.
Johnson is not the tallest on this list, though he does have solid height, but this dude is 230 lbs of punishment! While he is a 2 way player who gets some burn at DE, but I really like what he can do as a pass catcher. He has a nice release, does a nice job of getting leverage on the defender, and secures some tough catches! I think his impact as a receiver can especially be felt over the middle when he is matched up against shorter defenders or lighter defenders that he can box out. I like what he has going for him heading into this fall, and am hoping to see him work in person soon.
Grant is a kid I have had a tough time evaluating, but from what I see there is no reason he doesn’t get a shot at the next level, I just don’t know what his ceiling is. He runs really well, seems to have good hands, and is very efficient running seam routes and out routes. It’s hard to jam him or body him up, as he is pretty physically imposing. I like what he does after the catch too, running through tacklers on his way for some extra yardage. He doesn’t have a ton of film blocking as he seems to be split out a lot more than tight to the line, so I would need to see that to say I have fully evaluated him, but I feel confident that he has the potential to be a really good player for the next level.
Jacob is a 2026 kid that I am really high on heading into 2024. What he can do as a blocker shows up very blatantly on film. He wastes no time off the ball getting to the 2nd level and a lot of times matches up with, or just completely out-physicals the defender. He has good footwork and strong arms to be able to suck the defender in and not let him go until the play is long gone. Where I think his game has really improved is as a receiver. He has a quick release, and makes him self big and available. He runs good routes, secures the ball and tends to rumble for some extra yardage. He’s growing into his 6’3 frame and it makes me very excited for his potential. Schorfhaar will be easy to spot this fall!
Now for a 2027 that you will likely be seeing on your TV on Saturday’s some day. Holden has all the makings of a D1 tight end. He is big at 6’4 215 and growing, and he carried himself like an upperclassman at the PRZ Showcase a couple months ago. Holden runs blazing routes with pinpoint accuracy, and can be seen making some really impressive catches! His film shows him doing a lot of things, including taking screens to the house which really surprised me. He’s quick and physical which will be a deadly combo. He is quickly becoming one of the top 2027’s in our state and could end up as the best of the bunch if he buys in and continues to work his tail off!
