Continue ReadingThese are my top ball carriers in order from our PRZ Next Winter camps this past December and January. I took into account their performance from camp, game film and each individual’s resume placed on the field this past fall. There are so many different types of running backs so I tried to rely on the basic building blocks of a great runner (Vision, Speed, Power, Balance, Ball Skills/Security, BPA- Big Play Ability). All of the players mentioned received MVP and/or Top Performer. Running Back’s 6-10 still to come.
1.) Michael Martin – South Carolina
RB Type: All-Purpose
Grades ()
Vision (8.5) Sets up blocks at first and second level. Using control to open up multiple lanes depending on blocking scheme.
Speed (8) Above average speed. Pulls away once behind last defender. Great knee lift to open gate once he feels a chance to get vertical.
Power (8) Keeps pads a little higher than I would like inside at times, but has strong legs to run through tackles.
Balance (8) Has good contact balance and doesn’t accept being tackles 1 vs 1.
Ball Security (9) Protects the ball well. Solid hands out the backfield. A receiving threat.
BPA-Big Play Ability (9) Good at returning kicks, can line up anywhere on the football field. Knows exactly who he is and expects to score!
Most notably received a verbal offer from the University of Colorado, Georgia Tech and Miami among other college visits already set. Martin tallied up 1,202 All-Purpose Yds 14 Tds this past season. Earned RB MVP honors at this year middle school camp. Right after the New Year Martin has moved back to South Carolina from Georgia. I know this isn’t the best news for defensive coordinators in the Palmetto state, but it really doesn’t matter whether Martin is coming or going- he is the #1 back in the state.
Displayed all the goodies in front of Ed Brooks versus the other 80 prospects that participated in camp at Fort Mill High School.
Highlights
2.) Josiah Dickerson – Oklahoma
RB Type: All-Purpose
Grades ()
Vision (7.5) Recognizes space easily and can see the backdoor if first man misses. However, I think he’s still so raw at realizing when to just run by defenders instead of making a move inside the hashes.
Speed (9) PR’d 4.59 40yd kid can straight up fly and is explosive when he decides to change gears.
Power (8.5) 250 bench, 48in Box Jump. Josiah leaves defenders scratching their heads because of the assumption that size equals the toughness of the tackle. He is not easy to bring down and feels more like your hitting a 200+ back.
Balance (8) Love the way he can go base at a moments notice after being contacted, then run right out of it like someone hit the pause button by mistake.
Ball Security (8.5) Chins the ball in traffic and can catch well.
BPA-Big Play Ability (8) The raw talent puts him at an advantage, but I feel he reacts more than reads to anticipate at the first level.
This kid has the potential of a Brian Westbrook, Darren Sproles, Maurice Jones-Drew, and most recent Deuce Vaughn. He is so raw right now, but has ALL the tangibles to be electrifying under the lights.
Writer Michael Knight was impressed by hometown talent immediately once Dickerson got to moving around during testing and 1 vs 1’s at Texas location. Plays three sports.
Highlights
3.) Zachary Belyeu – Georgia
RB Type: Power
Grades ()
Vision (8) Notices weakness in defense alignment and approach of tacklers. Sees what he likes and takes it.
Speed (7.5) Is load once them wheels start churning. Deceivingly quick!
Power (9) 225 bench, 240 squat, 350 deadlift. Don’t hit him low you will get trucked and concussed. Don’t hit him high you will be taken for a ride.
Balance (9) Love his footwork in traffic and when he decides to really lower his shoulder during runs. His feet doesn’t stop on contact.
Ball Security (8.5) Good hands. I liked seeing some of his 7on7 reps.
BPA-Big Play Ability (8) Physical playing style still breeds big plays. Zach can add on 6+ yds per carry just off of yacs.
I really really like this kid. I believe physically he is one of the most prepared for Friday nights. Belyeu is nice on both sides of the ball, but I really hope he hones his skills in the backfield because he got something special. Strong, quick, a natural football player who wants to win.
Writer Lawrence Morgan liked what he saw in drills and he passed the eye test with flying colors. Visited Tennessee Tech with future plans to hit more.
4.) Micah Nance – Tennessee
RB Type: All-Purpose
Grades ()
Vision (8) Eyes are always up. Anticipates pursuit well and knows when to put foot in the ground or climb the stairs outside without getting touched.
Speed (8) Long stride length that puts him into the end zone once he gets to the second level with momentum.
Power (8) Not afraid of contact and will cut you in half if you do not commit to wrapping him up.
Balance (8) Side step, single leg isolation moves happen naturally when off centered.
Ball Security (8) Squeezes ball in traffic and has decent hands.
BPA-Big Play Ability (8) Can punch the ball in from anywhere on the field if you give him a lane.
Writer Drew Toennies mentioned Nance first as a top performer due to footwork and physicality during camp. Nance missed some competition this fall with an injury, but came back during season.
5.) Logan Dairsow – New Jersey
RB Type: Speedster
Grades ()
Vision (7.5) Linear runner who likes to beat players from Point A to Point B. Can get caught up waiting for space instead of allowing things to materialize in front of him organically.
Speed (8.5) Fast and quick. 4.28 shuttle is crazy! Legs are a blur going through drills and keeps his arms alive in breaks.
Power (7.5) 8’4 broad jump. Explosive from a stand still. Gotta bring your A game when his pads are lower than yours.
Balance (8) Very good footwork. Can distort body and redirect at moments notice
Ball Security (8) Pure athlete with hands.
BPA-Big Play Ability (8) Loves the space to create and put people on his highlight tape. Missed all last year but still an 8 in my book because of his potential along with track record.
Writer/National Scout Al Pops & Brendan Mankarious tagged Logan as the guy early the way he performed consistently at the same speed during any drill or competition. Finished top 3 in every test of all positions.
