Regina (9-1) advanced to the quarterfinals and within a victory of another trip to the UNI-Dome. Wilton finished a fine season at 8-2.
The Regals will play at MFL-MarMac (9-1) next week. They’re chasing their eighth state championship since 2010, the last one coming in ’20.
Here are some players that stood out during Friday’s game:
Gentry Dumont
Gentry Dumont
Dumont really has put it all together during his final prep season. The head coach’s son shined with the deep ball in this contest. Many of those chunk plays occurred early in the game when the Regals scored touchdowns on their first four drives. He finished with 229 yards and a TD through the air and ran for 49 more yards. He shows good accuracy and a quick release. Dumont’s athleticism could allow him to play receiver or defensive back at the next level, opening up options in recruiting.
Keith has played a major role in Wilton doubling its win total from a year ago. The junior had almost 1,700 yards and 16 touchdowns combined passing and rushing coming into this game. He threw for 186 yards and ran for a score in this contest. Keith does a nice job reading defenses, making solid decisions on when to hand the ball off, when to run it and when he has an advantage through the air. He’s a good athlete with a strong arm and good speed.
Highlights
William Aitchison
William Aitchison
Aitchison contributes all over the place for the Regals. He piled up 107 rushing (9.7 YPC) and a trio of touchdowns on the ground on just 11 carries. The junior added four solo tackles. Aitchison is quick and athletic. He plays with a toughness and edge that aids him against bigger opponents. In conclusion, he’s just a really good football player.
Owen Hassell
Owen Hassell
Hassell complements the talents of Keith really well. The two offensive backfield mates move fluidly through the read and react well after its completion. Hassell accelerates quickly after receiving the ball. He follows his blockers well and makes sharp cuts. He also shows an ability to break tackles. He carried 20 times for 113 yards and two scores in this contest, giving him over 1,000 yards and 20 TDs on the ground this season.
Wallace impressed me when I saw him against West Branch earlier this season. The freshman did so again in this one, pacing the Regals with five receptions for 74 yards. He added a solo tackle and locked down the guys he was covering. Wallace is a quick-twitch athlete with good speed and understanding of the game. His future is bright and one on which to keep an eye.
Highlights
Carter Drake Metzger,
Carter Drake Metzger,
Drake Metzger impacts the game on both sides of the line. He does so by combining physicality with athleticism, agility and balance. He uses his hands well on both sides of the trench and drives through opponents with good leverage. He possesses power in his upper and lower body. He came into this contest with 14.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks.
Noah Clark
Noah Clark
Like Wallace, Clark jumped out to me with his play in the game at West Branch last month. He holds up really well at right offensive tackle. His work on the defensive line stands out the most, however. The junior can overpower the opposition or use his athleticism and explosiveness to wreak havoc. He recorded five solo tackles in this game with 2.0 for loss, raising his season total to 17.0. He added a sack, lifting his ’23 total to 6.0.
