Chandler @ Basha
A big time matchup in the east valley between two open division contenders. Chandler enters this one 6-1 and suffered a close loss last week against Centennial 29-28. Despite the loss, last week was an extremely impressive showing from Chandler as they proved to everyone in the state that they are right there in terms of competitiveness and will always have a legit shot to bring home that open division title. Blake Heffron Blake Heffron 5'9" | 165 lbs | ATH Chandler | 2024 State AZ has been touted with possibly the most intriguing role in the entire state, and has exploded with his opportunity. A dual threat kid that has been a gamechanger and was able to put up 28 points against maybe the toughest defense in the state last week will get another big shot this Friday. Basha comes in 6-1 and has been rolling after that week 2 loss against Highland. Demond Williams Demond Williams 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Basha | 2024 State AZ has been dialed in every week and it’s not a secret that he’s usually the best player on the field each week. A big time matchup that we could see again in the open.
ALA-Queen Creek @ Highland
After dropping their week 1 opener against Saguaro, ALA-QC has gone on to win 6 straight and enter with a 6-1 record. I’m ecstatic for QB Enoch Watson Enoch Watson 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB ALA Queen Creek | 2024 State AZ to get a full opportunity to show the state what he can do with his arm for this 2023 season, as he transferred in from Coconino where they ran a very run heavy offense. Needless to say ALA-QC has unleashed him and he’s checking every box in the book and brings a ton of competitive toughness. They’ll go head to head with a solid Highland team who enters this contest 5-2. Both of these teams are open division teams in my opinion and will compete with the best in the state. Highland is stacked with prospects, and it will be very interesting to see how both squads match up vs each other given the big time talent on both teams. Really interested in this one and I think this could be game changer in terms of momentum for whoever pulls out a win.
O’Connor @ Pinnacle
O’Connor’s record doesn’t do them justice. They enter this one 3-4 but dropped 3 games to some of the state’s best (Liberty, ALA-QC, Basha) and dropped a close 17-14 game last week against Boulder Creek. You have to believe they are entering this one with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. Their rushing attack has been nasty with a good 1-2 punch with Nathan Bayus Nathan Bayus 6'1" | 225 lbs | RB O'Connor | 2024 State AZ and Kaden Armstrong. Pinnacle comes into this one 5-2 with both losses coming against top teams (ALA-QC & Liberty). That ALA-QC game was a dog fight where they barely dropped one in a 29-28 last minute heartbreaker. Last week, they suffered a blowout loss to Liberty, but that might be the spark that Pinnacle needed to fire them up the rest of the way. Wyatt Horton Wyatt Horton 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Pinnacle | 2025 State AZ has proved to be a top QB in the state from every aspect, and he’ll have a huge opportunity to get them back on track and rolling.
Saguaro @ Liberty
Liberty enters this one as the heavy favorite as they haven’t seemed to have any problem with any school in AZ. They pose a 6-1 record with their lone loss coming against Centennial (CA) where it was a tight one score game 42-35. The talent is obviously elite for the west side powerhouse, but they’re technicality and execution is levels above most teams in the state thus far. Navi Bruzon Navi Bruzon 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Liberty | 2024 State AZ commands that offense to an elite level and has been an absolute gamechanger all through the season. RB Jon Wilson Jon Wilson 5'10" | 195 lbs | RB Liberty | 2024 State AZ has been a major help and has filled a huge role for Liberty, as they’re able to establish a lethal running attack with him and Bruzon. Saguaro comes into this one 4-3 and we keep hearing the doubt around the state with saguaro. However, their 3 losses are against two of the top programs in AZ with Basha and Centennial, and both of which were close games. The other loss was a blowout loss at Sierra Canyon (CA). They’re touted with a tough schedule, a new coach, and high expectations, but I don’t think it’s time to panic and count Saguaro totally out. They’re a super talented young team with the ability to get any time, and yes it’ll be a tough matchup for them this week, but it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out.
