Surprisingly, a lot of underclassmen have been performing well in the early part of 2023. In this report, there are prospects from every class receiving interest for the next level. So sit back and let me catch you up on what’s been going on along the recruiting trail in Western Pennsylvania.
Hundley committed to D1 FCS Richmond over the weekend. Kelsey fielded 10 D1 offers along the recruiting trail from programs such as New Hampshire, Bryant, Maine, Georgetown, Duquesne, Colgate, Sacred Heart, Fordham, and Bucknell before ultimately choosing Richmond. I watched Hundley dominate during the one-on-one portion of competition at the 2Tenths Top 150 camp this summer. In my estimation, Kelsey displays FBS ability but is a bit undersized at OT, presently at 6’4 and 260 lbs. Hundley has displayed strength and physicality, finishing defenders to the turf this season. He’s very athletic with long arms and has the ability to stonewall pass-rushing specialists.
Big Rico Steele Rico Steele 6’4″ | 290 lbs | OL West Mifflin | 2024 State PA recently committed to Bowling Green in the MAC. He’s a physically imposing, tough, and violent finisher when it comes to run blocking. He moves very well for a recruit of his size and is a coach’s kid. Steele has a good kick slide with a controlled, physical punch in protection. Rico does a great job of establishing his hand placement and running his feet through contact as a dominant run blocker. Steele chose BG over James Madison, UMASS, Miami Ohio, Kent State, and Eastern Michigan, to name a few.
Highlights
Alex received his 3rd scholly over the weekend from Power 5 West Virginia University. I recently featured Alex in a piece titled ‘Western Pa Prospects to Watch,’ and rightfully so. The 2025 OLB prospect is 6’3 and 211 lbs, and he has been dominant in the early portion of 2023. He’s a great zone-dropper, very difficult to block in the flat, and a punishing hitter that plays sideline-to-sideline. Latrobe’s leader also has D1 FBS offers from UCONN & the Marshall Thundering Herd.
Lewis is another D1 recruit who received a scholarship offer from Temple over the weekend. Lewis is a versatile prospect who specializes in being elusive with the ball. He’s gifted at executing cover 3 bail technique and press-man technique coverage. He’s a dominant returner who is also a standout WR. Lewis is very similar to Scoop Smith Scoop Smith 5’5″ | ATH Woodland Hills | 2026 State PA in terms of being a savvy slot receiver that hurts defenses in the middle of the field. Lewis received his first FBS offer from Brennan Marion at UNLV in the offseason. Keep your eye on Lewis for the rest of 2023. I believe programs such as Pitt, WVU, Marshall, Liberty, among others, should seriously evaluate Kenny.
Boyce received a football scholarship offer over the weekend from NAIA Culver-Stockton. Boyce is fast off the snap and has a toolbox of pass-rushing moves that he utilizes well when getting pressure on the QB. He’s relentless when it comes to motors, plays with a low pad level, and has violent hands. The ’24 pass-rushing specialist has an impressive 7 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 3 QB hits, and 18 tackles through the first 3 weeks of play. Besides Culver Stockton, D3 programs have been clamoring over Boyce. In my personal opinion, Matt displays talent that PSAC and MEC programs should be aware of.
