Chaparral @ Brophy
This one has a lot more potential than people think. Chaparral enters the contest 1-2 with their two losses coming against O’Connor and Desert Mountain. I don’t think the hype should be dead yet for Chap, as both of those losses were against some really tough teams being that Desert Mountain is a 5A contender and favorite, and O’Connor sparked onto the scene as a 6A contender, possibly fighting for an open division spot when it’s all said and done. Marcel Jones Marcel Jones 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Saguaro | 2026 State AZ has been progressing and flashing a ton of competitiveness along with a ton of tools in the box when it comes to arm talent and command. He’s still young with more room to mature into his skillset, but is expected to continue to take leaps throughout the season. This will be a solid test for him, as he’ll go up against another talented 6A school with something to prove. Brophy enters this one 2-1 and has seen a huge progression with QB and WR duo Charlie McGinnis Charlie McGinnis 6'3" | 205 lbs | QB Brophy College Preparatory | 2024 AZ and Christian Camarata Christian Camarata 5'10" | 175 lbs | WR Brophy | 2025 State AZ . I raved about Camarata and the the leap he’s been making from his sophomore to junior year, and he’s turning into a big time player for Brophy. Brophy’s lone loss came week 1 vs Williams Field 34-33, which is a game they’d love to run back. They could very well be a 3-0 team and if so, the open discussion gets interesting as they’ve blown out a contender Sunnyslope team and beat an out of state team- Cathedral Catholic (CA).
Pinnacle @ Horizon
A big rivalry week with a ton on the table as both teams start 3-0. Pinnacle has came out of the gates rolling as they’ve put up over 40 points in their last two games (57) (49). Wyatt Horton Wyatt Horton 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Pinnacle | 2025 State AZ has that offense rolling and he’s doing everything he needs and should be doing to rise his stock and continue to establish a powerhouse mentality this fall at Pinnacle. Horizon has also come out of the gates red hot securing 3 dominating blowout wins over Canyon View 66-17, Marana Mountain View 52-0, and Willow Canyon 59-0. It is extremely impressive on what coach Litten has been able to accomplish on both sides of the ball, as they really don’t seem to have that hole or weak point anywhere. The point differential through 3 weeks for Horizon is 177-17, which is one of the hottest starts I’ve ever seen at the high school level. Jase Ashley Jase Ashley 6'0" | 175 lbs | QB Horizon | 2025 State AZ has been a TD machine thus far rushing for 6 TD’s, along with other standouts Bode Zamorano, Carson Kolb Carson Kolb 6'3" | 215 lbs | LB Horizon | 2024 State AZ , Jack Metzler, and others making a huge impact. A rivalry game with 6A team playing off the charts, a 5A team playing off the charts, and a packed house has all the energy to be that dog fight type of game for 4 quarters.
O’Connor @ ALA-Queen Creek
O’Connor gets a shot to start 3-1 against a good opponent this week, as they look to continue to be a buzz around the state in 6A. The O’Connor run game has been lethal with Nathan Bayus Nathan Bayus 6'1" | 225 lbs | RB O'Connor | 2024 State AZ and Kaden Armstrong. They’re fresh off a big 55-21 win last week vs Cactus and look to carry that momentum over this week. Their lone loss comes against Liberty who has been dominating everyone, and their week 1 win shook up the state a bit with a 26-6 win over Chaparral. O’Connor definitely came into this season with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. ALA-Queen creek starts the year off 2-1 with their lone loss coming week 1 @ Saguaro 45-39. They’ve won their last two games over Boulder Creek and ALA-Gilbert North, both of which they put up over 40 points. A big part of this success has came from Coconino transfer QB Enoch Watson Enoch Watson 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB ALA Queen Creek | 2024 State AZ . Watson has thrown for 948 yards and 13 TD’s in just 3 games thus far, and is finally getting an opportunity his senior year to showcase his arm. I think he needs to be considered as one of the top QB’s in the state, and he’ll have another tough test this week against a fired up O’Connor squad. A huge big matchup for both teams as their schedules don’t get any easier moving forward.
