For instance, despite a player’s noteworthy production, effort or individual successes, his feats are less likely to be recognized if his or her team loses the game. Likewise, given the sheer number of teams, regions and athletes covered, those on the rosters of smaller and/or more remote schools and programs might find it more difficult to attract attention for outstanding athletic performance. To that end, here are some of the top defensive performers from Week 1 that excelled.
After finishing his sophomore season as the Engineers’ second-leading tackler and top returning defender, it perhaps would be easy to overlook even an exceptional defensive performance by Niece simply because they have clearly become the norm. For instance, despite his team’s 56-46 loss to Harrison County, the 5’11” 220-pound linebacker made plays from sideline to sideline, finishing the night with 6 solo tackles, 9 assists and 2 tackles for loss. Enlisting consistently disciplined eyes/reads, polished fundamentals and tireless pursuit of the football, he currently averages 12 tackles and 1 tackle for loss per game and possesses the durability and athleticism to also contribute offensively at fullback. In addition to his 15-tackle effort versus the Thorobreds, he also rushed the ball 5 times for 34 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 successful two-point conversions, and he even hauled in 1 pass for 55 yards. While he likely projects more favorably as a defensive player at the next level, recruiters will be impressed by his versatility and high motor.
Primarily aligning as an inside linebacker in the Gators’ 4-3 defensive system, Price exhibits the downhill lean, pad level and explosiveness on contact to successfully stuff opponents’ inside run game while also possessing sufficient speed and intelligent pursuit angles to provide inside-out pursuit on perimeter plays. In his team’s surprisingly dominant 38-6 victory over rival Warren East, he collected 3 solo tackles and 10 assists in a stellar defensive effort that held the Raiders’ highly-regarded offensive attack to only 29 plays and 72 yards of total offense. After finishing last season as the Gators’ fourth-leading tackler and the #2 tackler returning, Price appears more than capable of elevating his production his senior season. A major factor in Greenwood’s 2-0 start and strong initial team defensive performances, he has contributed 6 solo tackles, 12 assists and 1 tackle for loss thus far.

When assessing some of each week’s top defensive performances, it’s never a bad idea to check in on one of the state’s top returning tacklers, and if his Week 1 performance is any indication, Eagles fans can look forward to another high-production season from one of eastern Kentucky’s top defenders, regardless of class or position. In his team’s 36-14 home-opening win over Floyd Central, Pugh clearly confirmed that he is already in mid-season form after collecting 8 solo tackles, 4 assists and 1 tackle for loss in holding the visiting Jaguars to less than 130 yards of total offense and an average of less than 4 yards per rush. An exceptionally physical inside presence versus the run, he takes on blockers with excellent leverage skills, active hands and polished escape skills and exhibits the speed/athleticism to run down perimeter ball carriers even from less-than-ideal pursuit angles. Currently averaging 12 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 0.5 sacks per game, Pugh appears poised to conclude his extremely productive defensive career with his best season yet.

At small-school, Class A programs like Berea–particularly when surrounded nearby by countless big-school programs and traditional football powers–the challenge of standing out is real, even moreso in those instances when collective team success doesn’t occur. Thus, it’s important to seek and acknowledge outstanding individual performances, even in defeat, like Thompson’s effort in the Pirates’ 33-6 loss to Lynn Camp. Versus the Wildcats’ run-heavy offensive attack, the 5’10” 185-pound senior collected 5 solo tackles, 7 assists and 2 tackles for loss while also contributing 15 yards rushing on 5 carries offensively. As his team’s fourth-highest tackler last season and top returning tackler for his senior season, in two games thus far, he has produced 13 solos, 9 assists, 2 tackles for loss and 1 interception and currently projects to far exceed his 2022 numbers.
It’s not necessarily shocking to see one of Kentucky’s top small-school programs start their season well, but perhaps even the most die-hard Greyhound fan would find it surprising to note just how dominant the team has been on both sides of the football thus far. Entering Week 2 with a 2-0 record and outscoring opponents 108-12, it appears that 2023 could be a banner season in Paris, and the efforts of Webb on both sides of the ball will largely ensure them. One of central Kentucky’s most explosive and active defensive linemen regardless of class, he enlists a very quick take-off from stance, explosive blow delivery and exceptional change-of-direction skills to disrupt and redirect run plays from tackle-to-tackle. In his squad’s 58-12 win over Paintsville, he contributed 3 solo tackles, 6 assists, 4 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. After concluding his junior season with 17 solos, 69 assists, 14 tackles for loss and 5 sacks, it appears that Webb is poised this fall to exceed even those gaudy numbers.
