from Leslie County. Pugh lined up at middle linebacker where he was very impressive against the run. He showed the ability to come downhill in a hurry and meet the ball carrier in the gap before they could get going. Pugh finished the season with 159 tackles and 20 tackles for loss in 12 games. Bryce also showed the ability to make plays against the pass both as a rusher and in coverage, finishing the season with 3.5 sacks and two interceptions. He also played a role on offense, running the ball 31 times for 257 yards and two touchdowns. Bryce currently holds an offer from Thomas More and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more come his way as he has the talent to be a very productive linebacker at the next level.

from Leslie County. Pugh has had an outstanding season so far, accounting for 122 tackles and 15 tackles for loss. He is a physical middle linebacker that comes downhill in a hurry to meet the ball carrier in the gap before they can get going. Once he gets to the ball carrier, he explodes through contact with a ton of physicality, not allowing for any extra yards to be gained. He has proven to be reliable against the pass as both a rusher and in coverage, coming away with two sacks and two interceptions so far. Bryce currently holds an offer from Thomas More and I expect more to come his way as he has the talent to play at the next level.

Pugh’s defensive production has been widely recognized on this site–and rightfully so–but it also warrants noting that in addition to consistently disrupting opposing offensive game plans and collecting double-digit tackling totals each week, he also provides the Eagles a situational offensive weapon that other defenses must prepare for. Even on more difficult nights, like in his Eagles’ 50-12 Week 4 loss at Clay County, he still put together an impressive defensive performance with 10 solo tackles, 4 assists and 2 tackles for loss, and he also hauled in 2 passes offensively for 20 yards. An aggressive, perpetually active, downhill inside linebacker, he has already collected 48 solo tackles, 22 assists, 9 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 1 safety in five games this season. Offensively, he also has averaged 11 yards per carry on 9 rushes and scored 1 touchdown while helping lead his 3-2 Eagles to their best 5-game start since 2016.

When assessing some of each week’s top defensive performances, it’s never a bad idea to check in on one of the state’s top returning tacklers, and if his Week 1 performance is any indication, Eagles fans can look forward to another high-production season from one of eastern Kentucky’s top defenders, regardless of class or position. In his team’s 36-14 home-opening win over Floyd Central, Pugh clearly confirmed that he is already in mid-season form after collecting 8 solo tackles, 4 assists and 1 tackle for loss in holding the visiting Jaguars to less than 130 yards of total offense and an average of less than 4 yards per rush. An exceptionally physical inside presence versus the run, he takes on blockers with excellent leverage skills, active hands and polished escape skills and exhibits the speed/athleticism to run down perimeter ball carriers even from less-than-ideal pursuit angles. Currently averaging 12 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 0.5 sacks per game, Pugh appears poised to conclude his extremely productive defensive career with his best season yet.

One of the top returning defensive contributors in this part of the state, Pugh completed his junior season as Kentucky’s #3 tackler in Class AA with 96 solos, 47 assists, 5.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and an astounding 31 tackles for loss. No, that is not a misprint–an average of almost 3 TFLs per game! Primarily, his aggressive, downhill play–coupled with a relentlessly high pursuit motor–often combine to give offensive linemen fits, as he exhibits the consistent ability to run through any windows that develop in zone/power blocking schemes. Moreover, when taking on base and/or lead blocks, he consistently employs exceptional pad level, strength and leverage skills to either make the stop himself or constrict running lanes and redirect ball carriers.
