In a weekend filled with exciting matchups, the one between the 17th ranked Mountain Vista Golden Eagles and the Heritage Eagles was certainly one of them – as both teams were playoff teams in their respective divisions. Unlike many games this weekend, this game lived up to all the hype and then some, with this game being an old fashioned shootout from start to finish. Both sides traded touchdowns in the 1st half, with the score being knotted up 21-21 at halftime. The 2nd half is where things got really interesting. Mountain Vista would open the 3rd quarter with a score to make it 28-21, but Heritage would respond quickly to tie the game back up 28-28. The Mountain Vista offense would respond just as quickly on their ensuing possession however, to take the lead again, 35-28 going into the 4th quarter. The scoring would come to a screeching halt for most of the 4th quarter until the last minute of the game, as the Heritage offense was able to drive down the field and score a touchdown in the closing seconds of the game, to make the score 35-34. Instead of electing to go for the tie with the extra point, Heritage decided to finish the game in regulation by going for the 2-point conversion. Unfortunately for Heritage, the attempt would come up just short – sealing the win for Mountain Vista, 35-34. In a game as thrilling as this one, it was unbelievably difficult to pick just four players. In addition to that, I typically try to focus on two offensive players and defensive players in my Game Review pieces; but for this one I decided to focus on three offensive players and one defensive player because the offensive performances were just too insane to not acknowledge. With that being said though, let’s get into it.
Players of the Game
Kurt Rossner Kurt Rossner 6'4" | 190 lbs | QB Heritage | 2024 CO , Heritage Eagles (QB)(Sr.)(11) – In his first game as the starting QB for the Heritage offense, Rossner might have had the most dominant night of any passer in the state during Week 1 with his night against the Mountain Vista defense. Rossner completely shredded the Golden Eagles, as he went 22 of 35 (63%) for an eye-popping 381 yards passing, 5 passing touchdowns against an interception, and a QBR of 127.5 while also adding 39 yards rushing for good measure. When you put on the tape of Rossner’s incredible performance against the Mountain Vista defense, you can see he has great arm strength that allows him to hit every type of throw to all three levels of the field. Displays great ball placement and accuracy to every level of the field, including on tight window throws in between zone coverage. Highly accurate passer on the run and off-platform, with more than enough arm strength in combination with his accuracy to threaten all three levels while throwing on the move. Excellent pocket presence allows him to feel the rush well and move around the pocket and buy himself time to find someone downfield. Displays good athleticism for the position that allows him to be a threat as a ball carrier, as he has good enough top-end foot speed that he can pull away from slower 2nd and 3rd level defenders if given enough space. Tall, long-armed (6’5, 195 lbs), athletic passer whose traits translate to the collegiate level. Rossner is currently unranked for the class of 2024, with the late start to his spot as QB1 probably explaining why. Regardless, Rossner is an immensely talented player that will make Heritage a tough team to beat against every opponent this season.
Austyn Modrzewski Austyn Modrzewski 6'5" | 205 lbs | QB Mountain Vista | 2025 State CO , Mountain Vista Golden Eagles (QB)(Jr.)(13) – Modrzewski had nearly as prolific a night as his counterpart on the other sideline did, as he made mincemeat of the Heritage defense. It seemed like Modrzewski was distributing the ball at will against the Eagles, as he finished 19 of 30 (63%) for 285 yards passing, 4 passing touchdowns, and a QBR of 134.0. When you watch Modrzewski’s performance against the Heritage defense on film, the first thing that jumps out is his ball placement and overall accuracy, as his passes are consistently hitting his receivers in stride or in between defenders who are sitting in zone coverage. Poised passer that displays good pocket presence and is not easily rattled by the opposing pass rush. Highly intelligent QB that can quickly work through his progressions. Displays good arm strength that allows him to make most throws at every level of the field. Tall, long-armed passer with room to grow into his frame which makes his potential immense. Modrzewski is currently ranked the number 1 QB in the state for the class of 2025 as well as the number 1 player overall, and given his performance against the Eagles, it’s not difficult to see why. He has the size (6’4, 185lbs), the tape, and the production that you could want from a high-profile QB prospect. As long as the Golden Eagles have Modrzewski leading their offense, they should be a threat to win every game on their schedule the rest of this season.
Tanner Terch Tanner Terch 6'2" | 185 lbs | TE Heritage | 2025 State CO , Heritage Eagles (TE/WR)(Jr.)(4) – With Rossner having the type of game that he did as a passer, it only makes sense that his leading receiver had an unreal night as well. Terch was completely uncoverable for the Heritage offense, as he registered an insane 263 yards receiving and 3 receiving touchdowns on 12 receptions (21.9 YPR). To say that Terch was the focal point of the game plan last week would be an understatement. Diving into the film of Terch’s stellar performance against the Mountain Vista defense, you can see he is an incredibly versatile chess piece on offense that can be deployed from multiple alignments; whether he’s in-line with his hand in the dirt, in the slot, or out wide on the boundary. Tall, long-armed receiver (6’3, 175 lbs) with a combination of great speed and athleticism for his position that presents an incredible challenge to cover for any defender – but especially for slower or smaller 2nd and 3rd level defenders. Shows an elite ability to high-point the ball with fade routes on the goal line and while working back through defenders towards under-thrown passes. Displays consistently strong, tough hands when working underneath and through intermediate traffic. exceptional route runner at the TE position that knows how to create separation at the top of his route when working against a defender in man coverage and when to sit in-between zone coverage. Great ability as a run-blocker when working the edge, consistently driving the defender back well past the inital point-of-contact. Projects as more of a receiver at the collegiate level but could play TE if he can add weight to his frame. Terch is currently rated the number 1 TE and the number 36 player overall for the class of 2025, which is a more than deserving ranking just considering his night against Mountain Vista. If Terch and Rossner can continue this type of world-beating connection, the Eagles offense will be extremely difficult to slow down this year.
Carter Daniels Carter Daniels 5'11" | 185 lbs | LB Mountain Vista | 2025 State CO , Mountain Vista Golden Eagles (LB)(Jr.)(0) – Much like his performance against Ralston Valley last week, Daniels was once again a dominant force on the defensive side of the ball, with this performance being even better. Despite this game being a shootout and a showcase of the offenses, Daniels was still a machine defensively, registering an incredible 15 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, a sack, a forced fumble, and a pass deflection. When you turn on the film from Daniels’ remarkable performance against the Heritage offense, you can see that he always seems to be around the ball because of a combination of his extremely high motor and incredible first-step explosiveness out of his stance. Savvy LB that shows relentless effort whether working to shed a block, pursuing the ball carrier, or coming downhill to fill his run fits. Displays exceptional explosiveness out of his stance allowing him to consistently maintain power and pop at the point-of-attack when making contact with the ball carrier or an opposing blocker. Highly consistent tackler with good form that shows with very few missed tackles in the open field in 1-on-1 situations, routinely wrapping up and driving his legs through contact. Good hand strength and placement that allows him to stack-and-shed most opposing blockers consistently. Daniels is currently ranked the number 2 LB and the number 15 player overall in the class of 2025, with his night against the Eagles further cementing his ranking. As long as Daniels stays healthy, the Mountain Vista will be a tough outing for any opposing offense this season.
