Offensive Players of the Week
Gavin Lockett Gavin Lockett QB Pueblo West | 2025 State CO , Pueblo West Cyclones (QB)(Jr.)(3) – Lockett had, in my mind at least, easily the top performance of any offensive player last week in the Cyclone’s 32-0 shellacking of the Grand Junction Tigers. Lockett was an absolute touchdown machine for the Pueblo West offense, accounting for a ridiculous 5 touchdowns against the Tigers – throwing for 2 scores and rushing for 3 more in just 3 quarters of action. As I previously stated in my Game Review piece of Pueblo West’s win over Grand Junction, Lockett’s tape from his night against the Grand Junction defense might be some of the most impressive I’ve seen from the QB position, as the first thing that jumps out to you is his insane athleticism, as he shows elite level explosiveness and top-end foot speed as a ball carrier. Displays excellent vision and patience as a runner to find space/set-up his blocks, and more than enough explosiveness to pull away from 2nd and 3rd level defenders. Highly elusive ball carrier in one-on-one situations with defenders in the open field, that is a threat to take any scramble or designed run the distance. Displays great arm strength as a passer, consistently displaying the ability to hit throws at all three levels of the field. Exceptional accuracy and ball placement to all levels of the field, showing the ability to consistently squeeze throws into tight throwing lanes. Shows incredible accuracy on throws off-platform with different arm angles and while on the run. Lockett is currently ranked the 7 QB and the number 26 player overall in the class of 2025, but that ranking will almost certainly rise if Lockett can continue to play at a high-level.
Mason Kiewiet Mason Kiewiet 6'0" | 160 lbs | QB Westminster | 2025 State CO , Westminster Wolves (QB)(Jr.)(1) – While the Wolves might have come up well short of a victory in their 55-19 demolishing at the hands of the Denver East Angels, it certainly wasn’t because of Kiewiet’s performance. Kiewieit left everything out on the field with his night against the Angels defense as he went 11 of 22 (50%) for 163 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns against an interception, and a QBR of 95.3 while also accounting for 60 yards rushing. It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Kiewiet was the biggest reason the Wolves were even in the game as long as they were. When you dive into the tape from Kiewiet’s one-man performance against the Denver East defense you can see that he is an incredible athlete at the QB position with good arm strength. Displays the ability to remain elusive in the pocket when extending time to find a receiver downfield or as a ball carrier on both designed carries and when forced to tuck the ball and scramble. Deceptively physical ball carrier at the QB position that isn’t afraid to put his shoulder down at the point-of-contact to churn out extra yards at the end of a run. Displays good arm strength with the requisite ability to stretch the defense on deep balls and enough velocity on short and intermediate throws to squeeze balls into tight throwing lanes. Intelligent QB that displays a good understanding of coverages, DB rotations, and pre-snap coverage shells. Shows good accuracy when making throws off-platform and on the run, routinely hitting throws with accuracy to all three levels of the field. Kiewiet is currently ranked the number 16 QB and the number 112 player overall for the class of 2025, which feels like almost a given that Kiewiet will generate more recruiting buzz if he can continue to play like he did last Friday.
Liam Beattie Liam Beattie 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Ralston Valley | 2025 CO , Ralston Valley Mustangs (WR)(Jr.)(0) – Beattie was unquestionably one of the state’s top performing receivers in the Mustangs’ tight 13-7 victory over the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles, with his night ultimately deciding the difference in the game. Beattie was the definition of a big-play threat against the Mountain Vista defense, as he registered an impressive 103 yards receiving and a receiving touchdown on 5 receptions (20.6 YPR). When you dive into the tape of Beattie’s showing against the Golden Eagles’ defense, you can see he displays outstanding quickness and acceleration in a phone booth, making him an extremely lethal weapon out of the slot, creating matchup opportunities against most 2nd level defenders and slower 3rd level defenders. Shows great ability after the catch as a ball carrier in the open field, consistently displaying the ability to make defenders miss in space. Highly elusive runner that also displays good physicality as a ball carrier when trying to inch out tough yards after contact with the defender. Shows good tracking ability when tracking deep balls up the sideline, routinely looking the ball into his hands and making tough grabs against tight coverage. Good route runner that shows a solid understanding of different releases and breaks at the stem of his route depending on the coverage, routinely creating separation. Displays very strong, physical hands when making tough grabs in traffic on short and intermediate routes, consistently maintaining possession of the catch through the point-of-contact with the defender. Beattie is currently unranked on recruiting boards for the class of 2025 but regardless, will definitely be a player to watch for the Mustangs this season.
