Last week we finally had football back. And finally our first full week of football for the season. Last season was insane and had to be a top year for football in Nebraska. This week we have some familiar teams and some familiar matchups. However, this week the amount of games and the amount of talent is turned up to 11. We have amazing games all over Nebraska and I cannot wait to see the results of all of them. Last week we had a couple of massive games as well. Papio South and North Platte became a shootout. The Titans came out with the victory 41-35 barely scraping past the Bulldogs. Another game we had was between Creighton Prep and Bellevue West. Another great game ended with a Thunderbird victory over Prep 27-14. Finally Elkhorn North went down to play the Orangemen of Beatrice. The Wolves defense held on strong holding the Orangemen to only 3 points winning 21-3.

Week 1 Matchups

Ashland-Greenwood @ Lakeview

We got another repeat opener with this one. The Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays are heading over to Columbus to take on the Lakeview Vikings. Last season the Bluejays dominated the Vikings winning 35-6. [player_tooltip player_id='250440' first='Drake' last='Zimmerman'] has been a key to the Bluejay's success dominating the ground game with 186 carries for 1399 total yards. Along with this he has scored 16 touchdowns since 2020. Along with this he has had 131 yards on 10 receptions and another touchdown. Along with his offensivce skills he has had 26 tackles in total along with 2 TFLs. The BlueJays got a gem on defense with [player_tooltip player_id='305113' first='Thomas' last='Spears']. In his freshman and sophmore seasons he has already had 129 tackles for 5.9 tackles a game and 2 tfls. Along with this he has had 7 interceptions. Thomas has the ability to shut down any defense he goes up agaisnt. [player_tooltip player_id='706215' first='Yordi' last='Dominguez'] is one of the key components of the Viking's defense. His abilities to get thought to the ball carrieers and does not care about who is in his way.

Bennington @ Skutt Catholic

The theme this week is repeat openers and this one is going to be interesting. Last season the Badgers were enacting unrestricted warfare absolutly dominating their opponents. Scoring at least 20 points a game and going undefeated and winning the state title. Skutt is the old dominant power. Historically dominant in both state titles and in wins but over the last few years they haven't been at the same exact level as they were not that long ago. Last season the Badgers destroyed the Skyhawks 44-13. In 2021 the Badgers also dominated the Skyhawks winning 42-7. [player_tooltip player_id='245883' first='Gunnar' last='Lym'] hte North Dakota commit has been a huge part of their dominace over the Skyhawks. He had 152 total tackles in his carrer so far along with 7 interceptions. Lym is an amazing athlete and this year will be one of his biggest. [player_tooltip player_id='703717' first='Quinton' last='Archer'] is another great weapon for the Badgers Offense. On 79 carries he has rushed for 446 yards averaging 5.6 yards per carry along with 3 touchdowns last season. He also has one reception for 33 yards and a touchdown. On defense he has 29 total tackles averaging about 1.2 tackles a game. Skutt Catholic will be looking for revenge against the Badgers. Last season they eneded with a pretty solid 7-4 record making it into the playoffs. The Skyhawks always shoot for sucess and are looking forward to a better season. Their offense will be led by [player_tooltip player_id='408444' first='Bennett' last='Turman'] who has a cannon of an arm. Not only can he throw the ball with power but he can do it with accuracy and while scrambling. The Skyhawks have a solid RB in [player_tooltip player_id='250612' first='Anthony' last='Heithoff']. A prime example of a Nebraska runningback. Running with speed and force he does the postion well. He gets solid blocks when he needs too along with catching the ball when the play calls for it. Not only can he run it from the backfeild he also is a great returner.

Lincoln East @ Kearney

One year ago these two teams played in a season opener and this year they are playing against each other once again. Last year it was a close game with the Bearcats inching out a win against the Spartans 14-6. Lincoln East ended last year going 5-5 in total. After week 3 they recovered and played well for the majority of the rest of the season. [player_tooltip player_id='545269' first='Jeter' last='Worthley'] is a dominant QB with 1704 yards for 14 touchdowns. He is committed to Michigan for Baseball however his talent is great and deserves the attention. [player_tooltip player_id='250623' first='Dash' last='Bauman'] is a great Swiss army knife type of player. He has rushed for 503 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also has a pass for 34 yards and has caught 18 passes for 231 yards. On defense, he has had 176 total tackles averaging 8.8 tackles per game along with one sack. The Wyoming commit will be absolutely dominant. Last year against Kearney they used their air game while not getting anything going on the ground. Kearney had a solid season last year picking up some massive wins. They started off the season 5-0 including wins against Bellevue West and North Platte. They then lost in a nail-biter to Grand Island. They would make it to the playoff and lost to Millard South in the first round finishing with a record of 7-3. The Bearcats used a very balanced offense last season. Kearney has a few players who can stand up and replace the ones who graduated last season. Kearney has a few players that might break out this season. Players like [player_tooltip player_id='545268' first='Sawyer' last='Schilke'] who has played on both sides of the ball. He had 48 total tackles last season along with 21 carries for 91 yards and 3 touchdowns. Another Bearcat to look out for is [player_tooltip player_id='169901' first='Zander' last='Reuling'] last season Zander was a solid receiver with 37 catches for 643 yards and 8 touchdowns. He even averaged 17.4 yards per catch.

Players to look out for
