With that being said, I wanted to take some time to preview the upcoming season. Over the next couple weeks, I will be making my picks for some all-area/county teams for the 2023 season. To kick things off, I will focus on St. Louis County which is loaded with talent this season. After covering the offensive side of the ball, here is my 2023 Preseason All-St. Louis County defense.
Joseph Anderson Joseph Anderson 6’5″ | 205 lbs | DL Westminster | 2024 State MO is an incoming senior defensive lineman that is very high on our radar. He is coming off a solid junior year in which he finished with 54 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and six sacks. Anderson lines up at defensive end where he has shown the ability to line up as a stand-up edge rusher and in a three-point stance in different shades. He is a very skilled pass rusher using his speed, pass rush moves, and strength to win on a consistent basis off the edge. Once he gets past the offensive tackle, Anderson does a great job of finishing at the quarterback. Against the run, Anderson does a good job of reading the play and getting to the ball in a hurry to make tackles in the open field. Joseph is committed to Iowa where I see him developing into a key piece of their defense once he gets there.
Highlights
Tionne Gray Tionne Gray 6’5″ | 305 lbs | DL Hazelwood Central | 2024 State MO is another very talented senior defensive lineman that is high on our radar. Gray lines up at defensive end where he is very impressive against the run. He does a great job of using his strength to fight through blocks on his way to the ball carrier. Once he gets to the ball carrier, Gray finishes his tackles with a ton of physicality. He is also a very impressive pass rusher, using his speed and high motor to blow by opposing offensive tackles on his way to the quarterback. Tionne also plays a key role on offense as an offensive lineman/tight end. Gray is committed to Oregon where I see him having a very productive career.
Highlights
Caleb Redd Caleb Redd 6’3″ | 200 lbs | DL De Smet | 2024 State MO is a defensive lineman that I’ve had high on my radar for a while now. Redd had an impressive junior year, finishing with 63 tackles and 21 sacks. He lines up at defensive end where he is a very dangerous pass rusher. Redd has shown the ability to use his speed to blow by opposing offensive tackles off the edge and he also has some impressive pass rush moves that he uses to defeat blocks. Once he gets into the pocket, Redd does a great job of finishing at the quarterback. He is also reliable against the run, showing the ability to read the play and get to the ball carrier in a hurry to make the tackle in the open field. Caleb is committed to Kentucky where I can see him developing into one of the next great edge rushers for the Wildcats.
