There were several first-year players who flashed collegiate potential during freshmen and JV games in 2022. There may be starters ahead of them still but look out for these specific sophomores to begin contributing in some manner on Friday nights in 2023. Below, I breakdown the 2022 film that shows why these specific sophomores have potential to develop into collegiate defensive prospects.
Stetson Ula Cox Stetson Ula Cox 5’11” | 155 lbs | DB Shadow Ridge | 2026 State NV was a do-it-all playmaker for Shadow Ridge’s freshmen team last fall. I believe the versatile athlete is best suited for defensive back at the next level. Watch for Stetson to continue developing as a defensive prospect this fall.
Stetson’s athleticism and good tracking ability shows up in good ball skills that allow him to highpoint interceptions over taller receivers. Quick feet and flashes of good acceleration show getting into phase in man coverage. Balance, strength, and vision showing in his tough finishes as a punt returner only add to Stetson’s value as a defensive back prospect.
Ethan Markos
Ethan Markos
Ethan Markos is an underrated prospect out of Centennial High School in Las Vegas. Ethan has shown promise as an instinctive freshman defensive back. He has been invited to a showcase in the past and also attended a camp at UNLV last month. Watch for Ethan to visit more schools in the region before his sophomore year ends.
Ethan shows good awareness and ball skills jumping out routes that come into his vicinity. Good length, athleticism, and a quick change of direction get displayed when Ethan intercepts freshmen passes in zone coverage. Good instincts and aggressiveness shown running the alley and filling with intensity highlights Ethan’s potential to play safety in college.
Zachary Jackson
Zachary Jackson
Zachary Jackson is a promising sophomore who shows the skills to develop into a two-way prospect. Zachary could be recruited as a slot receiver, but don’t be surprised when his production on defense leads to coaches asking him to become a versatile defensive back in college. Keep an eye on Zachary’s development on defense this fall.
Good vision and acceleration get displayed breaking off big gains as a kick returner while only strengthening Zachary’s value as a versatile DB prospect. Zachary’s quickness and fluid change of direction give him the skills to thrive as an inside man coverage defender once he gets to varsity. Good strength and balance shows running through traffic as a ball carrier, but Zachary flashes next level power knocking out freshmen runners as a free safety in the open field. Zachary’s good combination of tools give him the chance to develop into either a nickelback or strong safety prospect before his high school career is over.
Jamarcus Johnson Jamarcus Johnson 5’9″ | 160 lbs | DB Arbor View | 2026 State NV is a two-sport athlete for Arbor View High School. Jamarcus made his mark on Friday nights as a freshman, so I am glad to see him visit UNLV and get some recognition from his hometown team. Watch for more schools in the region to invite Jamarcus to campus before 2024 gets here.
Jamarcus’ vision and quickness shown escaping traffic in close quarters highlights his return value at the next level. Good power and awareness shows disrupting the catchpoint when breaking on intended receivers in the flat from a deep zone. Jamarcus’ next level top gear shows as a receiver taking underneath targets for big gains down the sideline. Watch for Jamarcus’ cornerback projection to become solidified with more reps in coverage this fall.
Majik McMillion Majik McMillion 5’10” | 150 lbs | DB Desert Pines | 2026 State NV is one of several rising underclassmen for Desert Pines High School. The talented defender has had a busy offseason competing for a 7 on 7 team and also visiting Utah with several teammates. Look for Majik’s regional recruitment to heat up before his sophomore season ends.
Majik’s strength and quick feet in press coverage highlight his natural nickelback fit in college. Majik flashes next level acceleration and power attacking receivers with intensity who are targeted on underneath routes. Good physicality and tackling ability get displayed mirroring ball carriers in the open field. Majik shows his man coverage ability in a smooth change of direction and decisiveness in his breaks when mirroring receivers in off coverage.
