With the majority of their starters returning, Mountain View-Gotebo is a consensus top five team in Class C and ready to make another run when November rolls around. At this time last year, Mountain View-Gotebo was coming off a 2021 campaign that saw them make it all the way to the state championship game before settling for the silver ball. The 2022 season saw them get off to a slow start with two losses in the first three weeks. They were able to rally from that 1-2 start with big district victories in decisive fashions before a week eight showdown with perennial 8-man powerhouse Tipton. The Tigers would fall 46-0 and that would also cost them a shot at the district championship. They were able to bounce back the following week and finish the regular season with a 5-3 record. They went into the playoffs with a little rest after having a bye week in week ten. They won their first round game over Buffalo and followed that up with another win over Wesleyan Christian. The season came to an end in the semifinals after losing 50-0 to Waynoka. The Railroaders would go on to lose to Mt. View-Gotebo’s district rivals from Tipton in the title game.
But that was last season and the Tigers are focused on not only returning to the top of the district, but they want to finally go all the way and capture their first ever state championship in program history. As we mentioned, the majority of their starters return and most of the star power will be on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Six starters return on the offensive side of the ball and another six starters are back on defense. The biggest question mark for the Tigers will be in the skill position department as they do have to replace a few key pieces from last year’s team. But having nearly every starter back should give this team plenty of confidence as they head into a new season. The Tigers have become not only a perennial playoff team but they have made deep runs into the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. The biggest hurdle for them to overcome is the district, featuring defending state champion Tipton. If they can take back the district crown from the defending state champs, they will set themselves up for another long run when November rolls around.

– As we mentioned earlier, Mountain View-Gotebo would slip up twice in non-district play last season and the biggest loss was in week three to Hollis. This season, the Tigers will get another crack at them to get a victory before district play opens up the following week. Mt. View-Gotebo is going to be looking to not only get a little payback for last season’s 40-point loss, but they’ll be looking to get as much momentum as they can for a tough district schedule that awaits them. Last season was the first time these two teams have met in recent memory and chapter two gets written here.
Sept. 22 – Ryan
Sept. 29 – AT Corn Bible Academy
Oct. 6 – Temple
Oct. 12 – AT Bray-Doyle
Oct. 20 – Tipton
– Tipton ran away with the regular season match-up last season as they would beat the Tigers 46-0. They would go on to capture another state championship in December and they are one of the favorites to lift gold again this season. In the battle of the Tigers, Mt. View-Gotebo will be looking to turn things around in a series that has been completely one-sided and in favor of the defending state champs. These two teams have met 15 times in the last two decades and Tipton has won every match-up and the majority of them have been over early. If the Tigers want to truly contend in Class C, taking down the state champs will be necessary here.
Oct. 27 – AT Geary
Nov. 3 – Grandfield
Notable
When you look at their playoff history, there is no doubt that Mountain View-Gotebo is in the middle of the best stretch in school history when it comes to success on the football field in the playoffs. They have made six consecutive playoff appearances, which is the longest streak in the program’s history. They’ve also made it to three consecutive semifinals in the last three seasons and one championship game appearance in 2021. Before the last three seasons, the Tigers had appeared in only one other semifinal game back in 1996 when they made it to the title game before falling to Pioneer. But here’s another stat that proves this is the best time for Tiger football. From 1994 to 2019, the Tigers had a total of five playoff victories. They had two playoff victories in the last two years alone and have had seven in the last three years. The Tigers don’t expect that to change anytime soon as they get ready for the 2023 football season.
