No better time than the present to start looking ahead at the 2023 campaign. Highlighting top returners helps refresh our memories and prepare us for what’s ahead.
Let’s analyze seven difference makers among Class 1A quarterbacks:
DJ Vonnahme, ’24, Carroll Kuemper – I think Vonnahme(6-4. 205) is a college quarterback. I also could see him switching positions and excelling thanks to his athleticism. On film, you see someone who moves well and shows accuracy while moving. He has an easy throwing motion with good arm strength. He tossed 20 touchdowns with only three interceptions in ’22, completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 15.2 yards per completion.
Kaden Van Regenmorter, ’25, Hull Western Christian – Unfortunately, Van Regenmorter (6-3, 190) doesn’t have football film on his Hudl page, only basketball. Those highlights accentuate his athleticism and physicality. He threw for 19 touchdowns as a sophomore and rushed for another 460 with four scores on the ground. He averaged 13.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists in basketball this past winter.
Gavin Thomas, ’24, Aplington-Parkersburg – Another strong all-around athlete, Thomas (6-1, 165) plays quarterback with good instincts and a solid set of skills. He does a nice job with play-action. He racked up 16 touchdowns passes against only four picks in ’22, when he averaged 19.0 yards per completion.
Cayden VanMeer Cayden VanMeer 5'8" | 160 lbs | QB Panorama | 2024 IA , ’24, Panora Panorama – VanMeer (5-9, 180) completed 57.9 percent of his passes with 14 touchdowns as a junior in ’22. His film reveals a signal caller with a compact motion and whip-like release. He looks accurate even on the move.
Gavin Batta, ’24, South Central Calhoun – Batta (6-4, 180) posted a 143.3 quarterback rating as a junior last fall. He rolled up 18 touchdown passes and averaged 18.8 yards per completion. He added three rushing scores. When watching his highlights, you witness a strong arm with an effortless delivery. He does well leading the receiver.
Zach Driscoll, ’25, Monona MFL-MarMac – As a sophomore in ’22, Driscoll (6-0, 160) compiled a 144.2 QBR and averaged 19.9 yards per completion. He piled up 13 touchdowns passes against just five picks. He scored four times on the ground. On his film, you’re impressed with arm strength. He does a nice job keeping his eyes downfield when on the move.
Sam Boothe, ’24, Leon Central Decatur – Boothe (6-0, 165) tossed 12 touchdown passes in ’22 and averaged 14.5 yards per completion. He stands out during his highlights for a strong arm and a quick release. His ball placement is good and he gives receivers a chance to make plays.
