No better time than the present to start looking ahead at the 2023 campaign. Highlighting top returners helps refresh our memories and prepare us for what’s ahead.
Let’s analyze seven difference makers among Class 3A quarterbacks:
Aiden Flora Aiden Flora 5'10" | 165 lbs | ATH ADM | 2024 State IA , ’24, ADM – Flora (5-10, 160) is an excellent athlete who produces. He completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 1,773 yards and 19 touchdowns against five interceptions. He rushed for 1,662 yards and 17 scores. He reports scholarship offers from Army, Air Force and Princeton, and has visited Iowa and Iowa State. Flora fits best in option attack as a dangerous runner and keen decision-maker. He shows off a solid arm and can burn defenses overplaying the run.
Joey Rhomberg, ’24, Mount Vernon – Rhomberg (6-2, 185) missed the state championship game against Harlan after suffering an injury in the semifinals. He put together one heck of a junior season before going down. He completed 64.3 percent of his passes for 2,543 yards and 25 touchdowns with eight interceptions. He added 210 yards and four scores rushing. One strength that pops out on his highlights is his ability to hit receivers in stride. He shows good arm-strength and touch on deep balls.
Alex Manske Alex Manske 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Algona | 2025 State IA , ’25, Algona – Manske (6-3, 210) turned the heads of college scouts with a fine sophomore season that saw him throw for 1,688 yards and 14 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He rushed for 407 more yards with six scores on the ground. Manske boasts a big arm, as you can see on his highlights. He stands tall in the pocket and feels pressure well while in it. He keeps his eyes downfield when scrambling.
Reggie Postel, ’24, North Polk – Postel (6-1, 165) shared the quarterbacking duties with classmate, Isaac Zoske Isaac Zoske 6'3" | 163 lbs | QB North Polk Alleman | 2024 IA , in 2022. Postel completed 72.1 percent of his passes for 923 and 14 touchdowns with only three picks. He chipped in 206 yards and a pair of scores on the ground. Postel is a multi-sport standout, thriving in basketball and baseball as well.
Blake Aalbers, ’25, MOC-Floyd Valley – Aalbers (5-10, 150) helped guide the Dutchmen to the postseason as a sophomore, when he tossed 13 touchdown passes and completed 62.6 percent of his throws. He recorded four rushing scores as well. He gets the ball out of his hand quickly and throws accurately on the move.
Gavin Meader, ’24, Hampton-Dumont-CAL – Meader (6-0, 160) stands out on both sides of the ball for the Bulldogs. He completed passes at a 60.7-percent clip with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions. He rushed for almost 400 yards and six scores. He picked off three passes, one of which he took to the house, and registered 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack. He shows a quick release and comfort with zone read.
Brenton Hoard Brenton Hoard 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Keokuk | 2025 IA , ’25, Keokuk – After a strong debut as a varsity starter in ’22, Hoard (6-1, 175) is poised for a big junior campaign in ’23. He threw for 12 touchdowns and five interceptions last fall. He also scored five times on the ground. He helped on defense, where he picked off a pass. He moves around well in the pocket and continues surveying the field while under pressure. He has a good feel for the option as well.
