No better time than the present to start looking ahead at the 2023 campaign. Highlighting top returners helps refresh our memories and prepare us for what’s ahead.
Let’s analyze seven difference makers among Class 2A quarterbacks:
Tate Platte, ’24, Des Moines Christian – Platte (6-0, 185) is receiving college interest from schools like South Dakota, Western Illinois, South Dakota State and others after leading 2A signal callers with 31 touchdowns passes (7 interceptions) in ’22. He completed 60.8 percent of his throws and averaged 13.6 yards per completion. His highlight film shows a quarterback with escapability and a live arm. He completes passes from different arm angles and while on the move.
Preston Ries Preston Ries 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB Monticello | 2024 State IA , ’24, Monticello – Ries (6-2, 205) will be chasing quarterbacks as a linebacker for the University of Iowa. For now, he dominates opponents on both sides of the ball. He posted an impressive 161.8 quarterback ranking in ’22, when he threw for 24 touchdowns and 2,543 yards with only five interceptions. He rushed for 1,421 yards and 17 scores, while racking up 21.0 tackles for loss and 11.0 sacks on defense. You can see early on in his junior highlights why he’s playing linebacker at the next level. On offense, he relies heavily on his athleticism and has a very strong arm.
Max Knudsen, ’24, Osage – Knudsen (6-2, 185) tossed 21 touchdown passes as a junior in ’22. He contributed three scores on the ground and stood out in the defensive backfield with a pair of interceptions. He’s also a really good athlete as evidenced by him averaging 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists during the winter in basketball. On his junior football highlight video, he gets the ball out quick and hits receivers in stride. He can chuck it deep.
Gavin Kramer Gavin Kramer 6'1" | 180 lbs | QB Northeast | 2025 State IA , ’25, Goose Lake Northeast – Kramer (6-1, 190) didn’t act his age last year when he threw for 19 touchdowns, averaging 14.8 yards per completion. He chipped in with 868 yards and 10 scores rushing. He added five interceptions and 3.5 tackles for loss as an outside linebacker. He’s a handful to corral and bring down when running with the ball. If opponents commit too much to the stopping the rush, he will torch them with a strong, accurate arm.
Jack Cooley, ’24, Osceola Clarke – Cooley (6-4, 170) is coming off a basketball season that saw him average 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists as a junior this winter. That came following a football campaign where he threw for 1,515 yards and 16 touchdown passes along with two scores on the ground. He displays a strong arm and quick release during his highlights. He feels pressure in the pocket well and does a nice job sliding his feet when it comes.
Bryce Buckley, ’24, Camanche – Buckley (6-1, 160) helped the Storm reach the playoffs last season throwing 12 touchdown passes as a junior. On his highlights, he shows a good amount of athleticism, which allows him to make plays off of schedule. He has a strong arm and accuracy throwing deep.
Caden Lundt, ’25, Spirit Lake – Lundt’s sophomore highlights reveal a young signal caller with an advanced feel for the position. The 6-foot-3, 165-pounder tossed 12 touchdown passes and ran for three scores last fall. He can throw into tight windows and has a knack for putting the ball where his receiver can make a play. He shows solid footwork and accuracy on roll-outs.
