Continue ReadingNew Jersey is filled with talent returning for their junior and senior year. In 2022, plenty of underclassman made 1st or 2nd team in the American Blue division. This series will break down those players and the success they had this past season, and will also look forward to what they are able to accomplish in 2023 and beyond.
A do it all player for Sussex Tech, Andrew Baker Andrew Baker 5’10” | 160 lbs | RB Sussex County | 2024 State NJ was dominant in 2022. Listed as an Athlete in the 2024 class, Andrew played a huge role for his team offensively and defensively.
As the ball carrier, Andrew punished any defender standing in his path. He used his bigger frame to his advantage, and would hit the hole hard. You would even see Sussex Tech line Andrew up in the wildcat to take the direct snap and run down hill with it. Rushing for almost 2500 yards and over 25 touchdowns thus far in his high school career, Andrew must be close to breaking some school records.
Andrew shined on both sides of the ball. He was just as impressive playing a somewhat hybrid position on defense. With 45 tackles and 2 interceptions in 2022, Andrew has the ability to singlehandedly change the momentum of a game. Sussex Tech’s season didn’t go as planned in 2022, but I expect to see a lot of progress to made in 2023 with Andrew Baker Andrew Baker 5’10” | 160 lbs | RB Sussex County | 2024 State NJ leading the way.
Demarius Posey Demarius Posey 5'10" | 150 lbs | RB Newton | 2024 NJ
Demarius Posey Demarius Posey 5'10" | 150 lbs | RB Newton | 2024 NJ
Newton completed dominated in 2022 on both sides of the ball. Demarius Posey Demarius Posey 5’10” | 150 lbs | RB Newton | 2024 NJ , Newton’s starting cornerback, played a huge part in their success. He is a route disruptor, pressing hard at the line of scrimmage and putting the receiver out of position to get open. He has good size and can compete for the jump ball with taller receivers, and can change directions quickly to defend all of the short comeback routes. With 35 tackles and 5 interceptions in 2022, Demarius was a player you would want to avoid throwing towards.
I also expect him to make a larger impact on offense in 2023 as well. Newton has huge shoes to fill at the RB position, and Demarius seems to be the next in line. He will be playing a big role in 2023 as a leader on his team.
Matt Teets
Matt Teets
Matt Teets is another Newton defensive back that earned recognition in 2022. Earning 2nd team American Blue, Matt was another force on the Newton defense that helped them begin the season 10-0, before falling to Caldwell. With 32 tackles and 2 interceptions, Matt and Demarius will both be seniors this upcoming fall, and they will hold it down on defense to continue the success Newton has had.
Jake Van Eewen
Jake Van Eewen
Jake Van Eewen is another off the radar player on the 2022 American Blue all star team. Earning 2nd team as a sophomore, this defensive lineman helped Wallkill Valley to a 6-3 record and finish 2nd in the American Blue division in 2022. Being in the class of 2025, Jake has two more years to truly perfect his craft. You will hear more about this player in years to come.
Dan Fahey
Dan Fahey
Dan Fahey played very well on both sides of the ball in 2022. Earning 1st team on the defensive side of the ball, the Kittatinny linebacker brought in 53 total tackles and 2 for a loss. Dan did some incredible things lining up as the middle backer. He was able to shake off 2nd level linemen and pursue the ball carrier before they got down field for a big play. He is also the type of player to go until the whistle blows. Even when the play is happening across the field, you will find Dan in pursuit. Dan has great size and one more year to show what he’s capable of. I could see him having a future at the next level.
Brian Gruber
Brian Gruber
While Matthew Baker was the punisher for Sussex Tech’s run game, Brian Gruber was the speedster. These two combined for well over 2000 yards rushing in 2022. Like Matt, Brian was given the ball from multiple position in the backfield, occasionally lineup in wildcat as well. Brian has very good vision and is able to make very precise cuts to get to open field. When he’s there, his long strides help him out run his opponents.
Standing over 6 feet as a sophomore, Brian has a lot to look forward to. He was able to run for 1013 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season, and earned second team offense for the skill position in the division. Sussex Tech can only go up from here, so don’t be surprised if you hear some noise surrounding this team’s run game in 2023.
