Classification Notes
Class 1A
– This classification is wide open now with multiple power programs moving out into higher classifications but there are still some top level football schools remaining. Those schools right now are Coalfield, Gordonsville, McKenzie, MASE and South Pittsburg.
– One new team to the Class 1A ranks that can make some noise moving forward is Union City. The Golden Tornadoes, led by Keaten Brown Keaten Brown 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Union City | 2024 TN and Jacob Arnold Jacob Arnold 5'10" | 205 lbs | RB Union City | 2024 TN , have the tradition and talent to not only win future titles but could make a run to Chattanooga this coming Fall.
Class 2A
– Several new schools have joined the Class 2A ranks and a few of them are some serious title contending teams. Among the new programs joining Class 2A includes Fayetteville, Milan, Peabody, Smith Co. and Waverly Central.
Fayetteville could step into 2A this season and immediately compete for a state championship. Peabody is a perennial power from 1A that is stepping up in competition while Milan is dropping down to 2A and that move could make the Bulldogs a powerhouse.
Class 3A
– Alcoa is the clear team to beat in Class 3A but competition for them does appear to be tougher moving forward with the additions of some solid football programs. Coming off a state title, Tyner Academy is making the move to 3A and hopes are they can build off last year’s championship run and build themselves into a power.
Chatt. Central and Westview are two other new schools to the 3A ranks that could give some solid competition to the Tornadoes.
Gatlinburg-Pittman will still have to make it through Alcoa to earn a state title but they can now go after a region title as they have moved out of the Tornadoes region and gone to the Class 3A-Region 1.
Class 4A
– There weren’t too many changes to Class 4A but it did add a few new programs to the ranks that should make this classification much deeper. Region looks quite strong now with the additions of Upperman and White Co. to go alongside DeKalb Co., Macon Co. and Stone Memorial.
– Station Camp is also a new addition to Class 4A and I think this was a good move that should benefit the Bison program over the coming years.
Class 5A
– Class 5A has some seriously tough regions now with the additions of some strong programs. Region 7 in particular looks very hard, sporting Beech, Hendersonville, Henry Co. Hunters Lane, Portland and Springfield. Multiple state title contenders will come from this region over the coming years.
– Watch out for the Centennial Cougars this season as they have made the move down from 6A to 5A and this decision could pay off with a state title by season’s end. The Cougars have a deep and talented senior class that only got better recently with the addition of quarterback Elisha Nieves Elisha Nieves 6'4" | 190 lbs | QB Centennial | 2024 TN . Centennial resides in a tough region with Nolensville and Page but the Cougars should be up for the challenge
– Tullahoma is another new program to the 5A ranks and this is a big step up for the Wildcats program after residing in Class 4A for many, many years. It may take some time to adjust but Tullahoma has the support and tradition to develop into a future 5A power.
Class 6A
– The biggest change to Class 6A comes from Region 4 with the additions of some top notch programs in Gallatin, Green Hill, Mt. Juliet and Wilson Central. Joining Cookeville, Lebanon and Warren County. Region 4 now becomes quite formidable with several programs that consistently put players into college football.
D2-Class A, AA, AAA
– After winning back to back titles in D2-Class AA, the Lipscomb Academy Mustangs are now moving up to take on the big boys in D2-Class AAA and it was the right move to make. Taking on the likes of Baylor, Brentwood Academy, MBA, McCallie and others will test the Mustangs and see where they stand as a program.
– The Bruins from USJ are moving up to take on stiffer competition this Fall by heading to D2-Class AA after many years down in D2-Class A. This will be a big challenge for the Bruins but this program has been a consistent winner that should continue those ways within a bigger classification.
– Pope Prep has moved down to the D2-Class AA ranks and that may give the Knights a better shot at winning a state title as their competition levels out for them. Look for this program to make a move to the top of D2-Class AA sooner rather than later.
