Every Friday during February through April, we’re going to throw on the tape and break down athletes across Oklahoma. Last month, we put out a tweet asking prospects in the 2024-2026 classes to send us their film for our Film Review feature. Over 150 responses later and we’re off to the races. We’ve reviewed 75 prospects all over Oklahoma so far and we’re not close to slowing down. Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma every Friday for more breakdowns on athletes across Oklahoma. This week, we put out not one, but two Film Reviews and this is part two! Check out part one RIGHT HERE!
If you’re not featured this week but have sent us your film, don’t worry! You’re on the list and will be covered in the future. Now, all of these breakdowns are based on the film we have access to. And this isn’t just a puff piece. While the majority of the breakdowns will be positive, it will also include areas to improve, question marks and more for the prospect to work on as we head into the spring and summer.
The first film that we put on is Cherry from Owasso who stands at 6’6″ and weighs 280 pounds. Cherry is someone who has picked up an offer from the Big 12 recently and will continue to gain traction in the recruiting process. Cherry plays tackle for the Rams and is a 2nd-year starter for Blakenship. Putting on the film, it’s not hard to see what recruiters see in Cherry’s athleticism overall. He moves well out in open space as he is someone who the Rams like to pull. Cherry plays physical and will continue in this area with the strength development the Rams offer and Cherry being in the class of 2025. Cherry comes off the ball well and he is always trying to find work in the second level. I would like to see more film of him in past protection to gauge where he is with technique. I look for Cherry to come out and have a great Junior season with the Rams.
Daniel Newton Daniel Newton 6'0" | ATH Edmond Santa Fe | 2025 State OK
Daniel Newton Daniel Newton 6'0" | ATH Edmond Santa Fe | 2025 State OK
Newton plays multiple positions for Edmond Santa Fe, but I watched him at quarterback and receiver. He is 5’11” and weighs in at 180 pounds. He excels in the run game, at quarterback, where the Wolves utilize him by giving him the option to read the defensive end and pull to run it to run. Newton is quick in his reads and gets upfield quickly. I only watched a few clips of him throwing the ball, but he made decent throws where he set his feet and followed through. When the pocket collapsed, Newton was quick to tuck the football and take off between the tackles to gain yards. Out at receiver, he was physical in blocking and uses his hands to catch the ball. It will be interesting to see what role Newton will take this upcoming season, but the Wolves coaching staff will find ways to utilize Newton best fit for their team.
Jack Harris Jack Harris 6'1" | LB Heritage Hall | 2024 OK
Jack Harris Jack Harris 6'1" | LB Heritage Hall | 2024 OK
Harris and the Chargers are coming off a 3A State Championship season where finished at 13-1 overall record. This is the schools 8th state title in which the Chargers captured their 9th straight district championship. Harris plays defensive end, tackle, and long snapper for the Chargers. While playing long snapper, he has a good crisp snap back to his holder. I like the zip he spins on the ball and gets it back to the holder quickly. Harris comes off the ball out at defensive end and plays an aggressive style of defense. When the ball is ran away from him, he plays down the line of scrimmage. I would like to see him get more hands on his lineman, but this could be the style the Chargers want Harris to play. He is a bit undersized to play defensive end at the next level, but could bump out and play an outside linebacker role.
Marques McGrew Marques McGrew 6'0" | 250 lbs | DL Choctaw | 2024 State OK
Marques McGrew Marques McGrew 6'0" | 250 lbs | DL Choctaw | 2024 State OK
What is there not to like about McGrew!? For the style of defense the Yellowjackets play, McGrew helps plugs up the middle and anchors the defensive line up front. McGrew plays vertical and is quick off the ball. He uses his hands on the first initial contact with the offensive lineman to gain separation and gets off the block. He uses a few different techniques to find his way through to the ball carrier, and I like his push-pull technique. McGrew is active and continuously keeps moving toward the ball. He is strong, plays physically up front for the Yellowjackets, and seems to be around the play consistently.
Zaphaniah Davison
Zaphaniah Davison
Davison plays cornerback for Southmoore who stands in at 5’10” and weighs in at 160 pounds. I like his backpedal and his technique in the passing game when he drives in on the ball. Davison gets downhill to attack the offensive wide receiver or ball carrier in a hurry as he doesn’t hesitate or wait for someone else to make a play. Davison sets a good edge when keeping the ball carrier in the inside of his hip. He will attack through the thighs of the offensive ball carrier and makes plays in the run game. He seems to be in good position when the ball is in the air and plays with good technique. Davison is in the class of 2024 for Southmoore and is ready for his Senior season.
