The defensive back group may have been small in numbers, but quality over quantity was well represented. Here’s a look at several defensive backs who played big and stood out.
Outhouse Jr. was one of the most physically gifted athletes who attended the PRZ Next South Camp. He has great length, good size at 5’10 and uses every bit of his frame to play the passing lanes, not giving up space when he locks up in coverage. When he plays press coverage, his strong punch, as well as his strength to redirect his opponent, are key traits that standout in his game. The swagger that he plays with is always on ten and his confidence in himself to be a playmaker was on full display during the competitive one on ones versus the offense. His backpedal is clean and fluid. Jerry flips his hips well and his change of direction allows him to be in position make plays routinely. During his fall season, he took back an interception ninety-plus yards, showing of his long speed and burst. Jerry has the goods that defensive coordinators drool over at the defensive back position.
Highlights
Caston has good quickness, he transitions into his backpedal smoothly and he is able to flip his hips well. He loves to get hands on his opponent in press coverage at the line of scrimmage and he has the power to alter the receiver’s route at the point of attack. Braylon has a solid build and a strong lower half with a stern base. His tenacity was on display as he competed on multiple back-to-back reps versus the wide receivers, which lead to several pass break ups during the one vs one session. Caston is a well-rounded athlete, who has the versatility to hop on offense during his fall season at running back and tote the rock. As he continues to mature his game will grow with him.
Highlights
Mayo has excellent length, to go along with his 6’4 frame and when plants his foot and gets vertical, he covers lots of ground in just a few steps. He has the classic look of an elite free safety, but his one-on-one coverage skills allow him to step down in the box and be a menace in press coverage. He has an imposing figure and his extended arm length leaves no room for the quarterbacks to fit the football past him. During the agility session for the defensive backs, his footwork was clean and he transitioned into his backpedal smoothly. His upside is through the roof and his skill set will be in high demand by college programs as he continues to mature.
DyShon is a twitchy athlete, he changes direction smoothly and he has a large reach radius. He has a compact, stout frame and a strong lower half. During the group session versus the offense, he showed good patience in press coverage, he has a stiff punch at engagement, he doesn’t give ground easily and his closing speed enabled him to have several PBUs. As he progressed through the agility session for the defensive backs, his clean footwork and technique were on full display. Washington Jr. moves fluidly and showed good burst when he plants his foot and drives on the football. DyShon is a multi-sport athlete, which includes track and field and basketball. He dropped 32 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists this week on the hardwood. DyShon has a high ceiling and he has the skill set to dominate at the defensive back position.
