With offseason work picking up for the players returning for another high school season in the fall, now is the perfect time to note some of the top players to watch.
This article will list five defensive backs from the class of 2024 who deserve a spot on college recruiting boards, especially from in-state programs.
Rosenmeyer is one of the more fundamentally sound corners in the state with impeccable technique. He does an excellent job of getting his eyes in the correct spot and moving his feet while defending his leverage. When defending against the pass, Rosenmeyer plays through the hands of the receiver to play the ball in the air or disrupt the catch by knocking the ball out of the receiver’s hands. His 77” wingspan allows him to jam receivers at the line while keeping them off his toes, but it also helps him break up passes. Rosenmeyer is a physical corner with the size, athleticism, and confidence to play at any level in college.
Pacheco is a ball-hawking corner with outstanding instincts and excellent athleticism. He has superb acceleration and track speed, making him difficult to beat and almost impossible to escape. He has the ability to change the scope of the game with his knack for getting takeaways. He finished his junior year with seven interceptions, and only seven players in the state tallied more picks. Pacheco is another physical corner with impressive techniques and movements, making him a top defensive back to know.
Highlights
Harris is a playmaker with a high motor and great instincts, which helped him stand out during his junior year on one of the best defenses in the state. His ability to fly downhill and clean up run plays is a testament to how quickly he can break down the play and his overall athleticism. He does a fantastic job attacking the ball in the air or upon contact with the ball carrier, putting him in positions to force turnovers and secure takeaways. Harris finished his breakout junior season with five interceptions and a 4A state championship title.
Highlights
Guthrie is a versatile athlete with the skills, athleticism, and physicality needed to fill the box safety role with impressive coverage skills. He can line up as a deep safety or a linebacker and disrupt the run and the pass. He does an excellent job at tracking and closing the distance to the ball carrier before using his solid form-tackling skills to finish the play. Guthrie is another player who had a breakout junior year that landed him in the spotlight.
Highlights
Shelp is perhaps one of the bigger sleeper defensive backs in the class, making him a must-know cornerback. He has fluid hips and moves well when playing man and zone coverage. His quickness and sprinter speed allow him to run stride for stride with the receiver to defend against the deep ball. He shows excellent technique when playing against the pass and does an outstanding job of evading blockers and initiating contact when playing against the run. Shelp is an athlete who is floating a little under the radar, but he has the potential to become a breakout prospect.
