The 2022 football season has come and gone. Once again, the football season has just flown by. We’re a few weeks removed from the final football games of the 2022 season, and we’ve been recapping the year in football ever since. In today’s post, we’re crowning the 2022 winner for Prep Redzone Oklahoma Player Of The Year. Congratulations to Carl Albert junior running back Xavier Robinson Xavier Robinson 6'2" | 225 lbs | RB Carl Albert | 2024 State OK , who ran (literally) away with this year’s award. Robinson also continues the growing trend of junior running backs winning this award. This is our third year in business and for the third straight year, a junior running back has won the award. We take a look back at Robinson’s season, head coach Mike Dunn shares his thoughts on his star running back and we unveil the results for this year’s Player Of The Year race. Keep it locked into Prep Redzone Oklahoma every single day for more postseason content!
rnRobinson came into this season after a strong sophomore season but he was ready to take the next step as the marquee back in the backfield. When we look back at our information on Carl Albert prior to the season, the expectations were high that Robinson was going to have a strong junior season. But we imagine they couldn’t have predicted just how strong that season would end up being. Robinson would run for nearly 2,600 yards and 39 touchdowns and help lead Carl Albert to yet another state championship.
rnRobinson’s single-season yardage of 2,594 yards absolutely shattered the previous record for most yards in a single-season at Carl Albert. Think about that for a moment. Robinson joined some of the absolute best players to come out of Carl Albert and not only did he join that group, he raced by them and is all alone in first place. Robinson seemed to always play his best football in Carl Albert’s biggest games of the season. In arguably the biggest game of the regular season, Robinson shined in a dominant performance against Bishop McGuinness on the road. It was at that moment that we thought that the Carl Albert star was one of the best players in the state and that the Titans were once again true state championship contenders.
rnRobinson helped carry the Titans to a state championship but he had some help around him. The Titans were incredibly talented but there were so many moments during that title run where Robinson made things happen that were incredibly special and rare at the high school level. During his outstanding junior season, Robinson would emerge as one of the state’s top prospects in the 2024 class. He has already earned the attention of power five programs and his recruitment will only continue to sky rocket this offseason. Robinson is truly one of those game-changing players that was a threat to go the distance every time he touched the ball.
HEAD COACH MIKE DUNN’S THOUGHTS ON ROBINSON
“Xavier has been an absolute stud for us this season and was a huge reason for our success during the championship run. For all the great he does on the field, he does even more as an awesome teammate first. He always gives credit to his offensive line and has a great relationship with those front 7-8 guys. He always recognizes his coaches even though he doesn’t need to. These individual accomplishments are made possible by the whole team performing and Xavier knows that and it’s what makes him special!
What he did on the field this season was remarkable. When you look at the names he surpassed in Carl Albert’s record book, at a position that has excelled in our program, it’s almost unbelievable what he’s done. He’s passed guys on that list like Mike Gaddis, Dadrion “Rabbit” Taylor, Jay Hunt, David Oku, Stevie Thompson, Damon Turner, JR Moore, and Russell Berien. Every one of those guys played division 1 football, and now “Big X” is the leader of the pack. Not only did he break the record, he shattered it by almost 600 yards. For him to be on top of the list for season rushing yards and season rushing touchdowns says a great deal in this storied, tradition-rich program. This is an honor for not only Xavier, but for our entire program.
What I’ll remember most about Xavier’s season was his performances during the playoffs. In 4 games, he rushed for 840 yards and 12 TDs! All year long, in our biggest games, he shined the brightest. His coming out party against Midwest City. His phenomenal, 4 TD performance against McGuinness. The first round of the playoffs, scoring 3 TDs on his first 3 carries. His GRITTY performance against Del City. His 14 carries for 254 yards against Grove in the semis. And finally, his best statistical game of the season on the biggest stage against McAlester, 186 yards rushing with 2 TDs, 2/2 passing with a TD, and 1 reception for a TD! Those are unreal numbers for any game, let alone a state championship! We’re very proud of the young man and are thrilled to have him back next year for one more rodeo!”
