CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: 1-4 (6th Title Appearance)
Washington is making Edmond a regular stop in December as this is their third consecutive season to make it to the state championship game. It’s the sixth time in school history and the Warriors are getting really tired of silver. They won their first ever state championship in 1996 when they won the Class A state title. And ever since, the championship game has not been kind to the Warriors. They lost in 2005 in Class A. Then they made it in 2017 but ran into a Millwood juggernaut that was dominating 2A that season. And Washington came up short in the 2020 and 2021 state championship games to Metro Christian and Marlow respectively. The Warriors are ready to finally bring home the gold.
OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION: 40.9 Points Per Game
Washington has been incredibly consistent on the offensive side of the ball. The Warriors are averaging just over 40 points per game. Millwood does average more on the offensive side of the ball but the Warriors have made it look easy on offense this season. They have at least nine games where they have scored at least 40 points. And the offense seems to be clicking on all cylinders as they head into the title game on Saturday. They put up 47 and then 49 in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively. The Warriors are led by a strong rushing attack but they’ve also shown the ability to air it out when they need to.
DEFENSIVE PRODUCTION: 9.6 Points Per Game
While Millwood might have the advantage on the offensive side of the ball in terms of points per game, Washington definitely has the advantage in defense. The Warriors are giving up just shy of ten points per game this season and they’ve raised the bar in the playoffs. They’ve given up a total of 38 points in the playoffs and have been dominant for the last 12 weeks of the season. The Warriors gave up 24 and 25 points in their first two games and then held the rest of their opponents to less that 20 points all season. Their strength is definitely in the front seven.
NOTABLE
Washington has been the #1 team in Class 2A ever since the calendar turned to 2022. They fell short to Marlow in the state championship game a year ago and with nearly everyone coming back on both sides of the ball, the Warriors were #1 in our way WAY too early rankings back in January and then our way too early rankings in May. And then finally when our preseason rankings dropped in late June, the Warriors were in the top spot in Class 2A and they haven’t fallen. This is a Washington team that is determined to finish the job this season. They’ve only had two games all season that were decided by single digits. And they were absolutely dominant in the quarterfinal and semifinal round against Idabel and Jones respectively.
#3 MILLWOOD FALCONS (13-1)
Sept. 1 – Lost To Heritage Hall 35-28
Sept. 10 – Beat Douglass 45-0
Sept. 16 – Beat Scott City, KS. 30-20
Sept. 23 – Beat Alva 66-16
Sept. 30 – Beat Chisholm 56-6
Oct. 7 – Beat Perry 41-0
Oct. 13 – Beat Newkirk 44-0
Oct. 21 – Beat Oklahoma Christian School 40-13
Oct. 28 – Beat Hennessey 58-22
Nov. 3 – Beat Blackwell 58-0
1st Round – Beat Crossings Christian 34-29
2nd Round – Beat Lindsay 38-12
Quarterfinals – Beat Claremore Sequoyah 49-30
Semifinals – Beat Victory Christian 54-22
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: 7-3 (11th Title Appearance)
Millwood has had the opposite experience whenever they’ve made it to the state championship game. The Falcons are 7-3 all time when playing for the gold ball and this will be the 11th time in school history that they’re playing for a state title. The Falcons won back to back championships in 2016 and 2017. And there is some simitry with the teams they played in those title games. They beat Victory Christian in the 2016 title game and just beat Victory Christian in the semifinals. And they beat Washington in the 2017 title game and will square off with the Warriors with the gold ball on the line once again Saturday. Millwood lost their first two appearances in the title game but have gone 7-1 in the title game ever since.
OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION: 45.8 Points Per Game
Millwood has the edge in terms of offense as they are averaging nearly 46 points per game. The Falcons have scored 50+ points at least five times this season and this is an offense that has been on a roll since the playoffs began in early November. And they just keep getting better and better in terms of production each week. In all four rounds, the Falcons have scored more points than the previous game. If that trend continues on Saturday, the Falcons will be scoring at least 55 points. Something tells us that the scoring trend will probably come to an end on Saturday but there’s no doubt that the Falcons are rolling on offense.
DEFENSIVE PRODUCTION: 14.6 Points Per Game
Millwood’s defense has been some bend but don’t break and then they’ve also had games where they’ve completely shut down their opponent. The Millwood defense had four shutouts during the season and while the defense has given up more points per game once the playoffs arrived, they have also played some very explosive offenses. They’ll be tested by a Washington offense that can run the ball incredibly well. The Falcons will look to contain the Washington run game and force them into short drives so they can get their explosive offense back on the field.
NOTABLE
Millwood’s inexperienced and young roster cost them a playoff spot in 2021. That ended a streak of 13 consecutive seasons where the Falcons made it to the postseason. This is a Millwood program that has routinely been one of the top teams in Class 2A over the last decade but last season was truly a rebuilding year. Now, the Falcons are looking to finish off the bounce back season with the ultimate prize of a state championship. The Falcons have always been in the mix this season in Class 2A and despite missing the playoffs last year, we liked the Falcons to bounce back in a big way. Millwood captured back to back championships in 2016 and 2017 and they might be primed to win another gold ball with their mix of veteran leadership and excellent young talent.
