Level 4 Aquinas vs Kewaunee: Prospects of the Game

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>The Level 4 matchup between Aquinas and Kewaunee was a cold one, but that didn't slow down the action. Kewaunee jumped out to a lead right off the bat as they ended their opening drive with a TD. Aquinas came back a few drives later to take the 8-6 lead off what was TD 1 of 3 for <em>ATH Calvin Hargrove</em>. Aquinas added another when <em>QB [player_tooltip player_id='31399' first='Jackson' last='Flottmeyer']</em> found <em>WR Collin Conzemius</em> for the 55 yard passing TD. Kewaunee got the last laugh of the half, though, as <em>QB [player_tooltip player_id='204756' first='Mitchell' last='Thompson']</em> found his man in the final seconds of the half to cut the lead to 14-12. That is where things got out of hand in this matchup. The second half was all Aquinas. <em>Calvin Hargrove</em> added a couple scores. The defense and <em>OLB [player_tooltip player_id='414583' first='Damien' last='Lee']</em> got a sack safety. In the end, the Blugolds built up a 44-19 final score. He has a great frame for the position. The footwork is smooth and consistent. He makes quick, decisive choices with his attempts, and his ball placement and touch are his top traits. I was also impressed with his accuracy while on the run. Multiple times last night, Jackson was on designed roll outs. He would still be able to place the ball with pinpoint accuracy while on the run. Flottmeyer also has the mobility to hurt defenses beyond the line of scrimmage, and especially while buying time in the backfield. With so many strong traits I am surprised that he only has an offer from Winona State. He holds one offer from Duluth. That does not match the talent that Damien has to offer. That exceptional frame comes with a strong first step, good bend when rushing around the edge, and impressive closing speed when he defeats the block. Damien also has good body control. Not just to attack downhill. Aquinas uses Lee in coverage almost as much as they use him to rush the QB. Out in space Damien is able to slide, change direction, and accelerate with ease. He has been a riser for me this season. Expect him to be higher than the current rankings have him after the season. The only way I can describe him on the field is a dawg. Despite being undersized at 5'8u0022 170 lbs, Calvin has piled up 150 tackles at LB along with roughly 30 TFLs. On defense, he is a rangy, surprisingly hard hitting athlete. He is also a wrestler and it shows up in his tackling and bock shedding. The kid understands how to play with leverage. On offense, Calvin's wrestling background is visible with his balance and body control. There were multiple times where I couldn't believe Hargrove was still on his feet. He runs hard, is even harder to get off balance, and finishes every run. He might not look the part, but I think Calvin could play at the D3 level. Collin has state-level track speed, and he used it to take the top off the defense last night. His long TD pass highlighted his ability to eat up cushion, and then pull away after the catch and beat pursuit angles from the defense. Aquinas also used him on jet sweeps to stretch the defense horizontally. He added a second TD that way. The big play WR has averaged 21.3 yards per reception on the season, and scored 13 TDs through the air. Teams looking for someone to stretch the field need to give Collin a glance. This game was full of them. The dual threat QB earned his first offer from Northern Michigan back in September. He deserves far more attention. Thompson has an impressive, quick release that gets the ball out of his hands in a snap. Even with the compact, quick release Mitchell is able to get behind the ball and put velocity on it. Velocity that stays on the ball even on deeper attempts. He is also a QB who can place the ball right where he wants it. He sees the leverage of the defender and puts it where they can't get to it. On the ground, Thompson runs as hard as a lot of RBs. He can shake defenders in open space, and will finish runs. He checks in at 6'1u0022 360 lbs of stout run defense. The big man eats up blocks on the interior without losing ground. He also demonstrated some strength as he was able to shove blockers aside to make stops. Landon also plays with some active hands. Selner definitely isn't just a big body. He is active when in the game. It is also worth noting that he saw a lot of action. Conditioning didn't seem like an issue despite his size. Jesse is a physical runner who does most of his work between the tackles. Being built low to the ground has given him a natural low center of gravity that allowed him to be at tough angles after a hit, but continue down the field. The north-south runner plays downhill and without hesitation. If he has to go 3 yards and a cloud of dust he will because eventually he does break loose. He did just that a couple times Friday night.
