The Class 6A-2 state championship game is set for Friday afternoon at 1PM in Edmond as #1 Stillwater will face off with #2 Choctaw. These two teams have seemingly been the top two teams in 6A-2 all season and it seems fitting that in the final game of the year, they’ll face off and go head to head to decide the state champion. Prep Redzone Oklahoma will have plenty of content throughout the week, previewing the state title game and then plenty to check out during and following Friday’s game. But up now, we take our first look at the 6A-2 state championship game.

Semifinals – Beat Deer Creek 33-28
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: 1-5 (7th Title Appearance)
The top-ranked Pioneers return to the state championship game for the seventh time in school history and it’s the third time in the last five seasons. However, the Pioneers are looking for their second state championship and the first came back in 1967. The Pioneers have been one of the best teams in Class 6A-2 over the last five years, making it to the semifinals five straight years and this will be their third appearance in the title game during that stretch. But Stillwater has run into the Bixby dynasty three times during that time span and fell to the Spartans in addition to being upset by Choctaw in the 2020 semifinals.
OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION: 49.9 Points Per Game
The Pioneers come into this week’s state championship game with a perfect record and a lot of that is because of how dominant their offense has been all season. The Pioneers have averaged just under 50 points per game and have scored over 50 points in six of their wins this season. The Pioneers have a perfect balance between the pass and run game and have been incredibly hard to stop all season. The 33 points the Pioneers scored in their semifinal win over Deer Creek was the lowest output of the season for the Stillwater offense. Nobody has been able to contain the balanced offensive attack yet this season.
DEFENSIVE PRODUCTION: 12.1 Points Per Game
While the offense gets a lot of pub and attention because of the balance and scoring outputs they’ve had this season, you shouldn’t overlook how dominant the Pioneers have been on the defensive side of the ball. Stillwater is giving up just 12.1 points per game and there’s a good reason why nobody has been able to score on the Pioneers at a consistent pace. They don’t have the ball very long. Stillwater has forced 39 turnovers this season and have done a fantastic job of shutting down each and every opponent they’ve faced. But in the championship game, they’re going to face arguably the toughest offense they’ve played all year.
NOTABLE
While Stillwater’s defense has been lights out to go along with a high-scoring offense, the thing that jumps off the page about the Pioneers is their turnover ratio this season. The Pioneers have forced 39 turnovers this season while giving away the ball just five times. A 39-5 turnover ratio is pretty absurd but the Pioneers are in that spot this season. And three of those turnovers came in the Norman game where the Pioneers got a scare from the Tigers. We knew that the Stillwater defense did a good job of forcing turnovers but the combination of the two numbers is one of the more impressive stats that we’ve seen in this match-up early on.
#2 CHOCTAW YELLOWJACKETS (11-1)
Aug. 26 – Lost To Del City 38-34
Sept. 2 – Beat Edmond Santa Fe 37-20
Sept. 9 – Beat Westmoore 47-20
Sept. 23 – Beat Putnam City North 64-14
Sept. 30 – Beat Capitol Hill 56-6
Oct. 7 – Beat Deer Creek 28-16
Oct. 13 – Beat Northwest Classen 63-6
Oct. 21 – Beat Lawton 49-12
Oct. 28 – Beat Putnam City 37-6
Nov. 3 – Beat Ponca City 42-13
Quarterfinals – Beat Sand Springs 48-29
Semifinals – Beat Muskogee 45-20
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY: 1-1 (3rd Title Appearance)
For the second time in the last three years, Choctaw is playing for the state championship but it’s just their third state title game appearance in school history. The first appearance came all the way back in 1960 and they would win their only state championship in school history. After beating Stillwater in the 2020 semifinals, the Yellowjackets appeared in their only other championship game and joined Stillwater in falling short to the Bixby dynasty. The Yellowjackets are back into the title game after being upset in the quarterfinals a year ago. They are determined to finish the job this year and bring a gold ball to the home of the “G.O.L.D. Standard.”
OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION: 45.8 Points Per Game
Choctaw is right there with Stillwater in terms of offensive production as they come into Friday afternoon averaging just under 46 points per game. Like Stillwater, their offense hasn’t really been contained at all this season. They’ve only been held under 30 points one time this year and that came in a district showdown with Deer Creek. There are a lot of similarities between the two teams when it comes to the offensive side of the ball and it isn’t just their scoring average. Choctaw does a great job of having a balanced attack on offense. Despite having a great quarterback, they also mix in the run game quite a bit.
DEFENSIVE PRODUCTION: 16.7 Points Per Game
Just like with the offensive numbers, Choctaw is right there with the Pioneers in terms of points allowed on defense as they come in giving up on average 16.7 points per game. The Yellowjackets have a defense that is incredibly strong up front and they lean on that to put pressure on opposing offenses and shut down their running games. Really ever since district play began, the Yellowjackets have been playing incredibly well on the defensive side of the ball and have done a good job limiting some offenses that had explosive playmakers. While they don’t haven’t forced nearly as many turnovers as Stillwater, the Yellowjackets are still getting stops.
NOTABLE
Since dropping a season opener shootout to Del City, the Yellowjackets have been perfect. They’ve won their last eleven games and have looked as close to perfect as you can get during this stretch. They don’t have as many blowout wins as Stillwater does but they also have been quicker to take the foot off the pedal this year and their starters come into this week rested and ready for a 48-minute battle. The Yellowjackets have been knocking on the door of winning state championships since Jake Corbin took over as head coach and they look to finish off the job this season behind a great senior class, with a mix of talented underclassmen.
