Continue ReadingLevel Two was highlighted by big performances from ball carriers and receivers from across Wisconsin. It is those two position groups that make up all nine of our Best Offensive Performances from the week. Each of these athletes were able to take over the game thanks to their superior traits and talents. The purpose of this article is do deep dive into those traits and talents, so we can identify what they have to offer the next level. We start in Bay Port…
Brett Shipley
Brett Shipley
Stats: 3 Receptions, 118 Yards, 2 TDsrnIt is very short film, but in a matter of three catches the 5’11” senior took over the game. Brett’s top end speed allowed him to take the top off the defense as he easily ran past DBs. There was no catching Shipley from behind. Brett also tarcked the ball in the air well. Bay Port has been a dominant running team ,and with Shipley breaking out that speed on the outside teams will be forced to cover the entire field. It is going to make the Pirates even harder to slow down.
Jaxson Garbisch
Jaxson Garbisch
7 Receptions, 122 Yards, 2 TDsrnThe 6’3″ 195 lbs WR is just starting to get the recruiting attention he deserves. Kimberly needed every bit of the big WRs production to pull off the 1 point comeback victory. Despite his big frame, Jaxson has solid route running. He was able to use head fakes, and would close on the DB before making his cut at the last minute leaving them little time to react and recover. Garbisch also has soft hands, and proved to be a clutch player as he made the game winning play thanks to his ability to elude tacklers after the catch. Kimberly is a team to watch these playoffs, and Jaxson is a senior prospect on the rise.
Ashton Krause
Ashton Krause
Stats: 8 Carries 91 Yards, 4 TDs, 2 Receptions, 47 YardsrnIt did not take much for the 6’1″ junior to blow their Level Two matchup with Franklin wide open. Half of his carries ended with him in the endzone. The keys to his big plays was his vision, and speed. Ashton did an impressive job of reading his blocks as he stretched the field horizontally. Once he found his lane he quickly cut up field, read how his blocks were setting up, and maximized their effectiveness with how he played off them. Krause also had the speed to take it the distance once he got into green grass. We also got a taste of soft hands, and impressive route running out of the backfield. Definitely a name to keep tabs on over the next year.
Stats: 31 Carries, 172 Yards, 3 TDsrnI watched this River Falls team in person. It was a week when Jonah was out, and it was very clear that the offense wasn’t the same without him on the field. Jonah is a 6’2″ 200 lbs workhorse of a tailback. He is a downhill, powerful back who doesn’t spend much time juking defenders. He can make the subtle jukes to make a defender miss, but he is best when he can run behind his pads. Jonah also has the vision to allow him to get the most yards before contact. That combination of vision for yards before contact, and power to gain yards after allows him to be a tone setter in the run game. Severson punishes defensive front sevens. I’m excited to get him in the rankings.
Stats: 5 Receptions, 87 Yards, 2 TDsrnThe 5’10” 175 lbs slot receiver will be a name to know in the Class of 2024. The playmaker is most dangerous after the catch. They put him in positions to do that with a lot of screen plays. Once Connor has the ball in his hands he gets to use his next level acceleration to burst through even the tightest lanes between defenders. He also has the quick twitch change of direction, and start/stop ability to make him very hard to contain. He sees the field and finds his paths just as quickly too. It looked like Connor was playing faster than any defender on the field Friday night. It led to a big night, and team victory.
Stats: 7 Receptions, 195 Yards, 2 TDsrnIn one of the best games of the weekend, Tommy came out to play. They needed every bit of his big night to pull off the two point victory. Tommy tore apart the defense with superior speed. Speed that he used to fly by defenders that were giving him plenty of cushion. Teberg also has the short area quickness and agility to get clean releases off the line when pressed, as well as to create separation in the breaks of his routes. The junior receiver also has reliable hands and good concentration on catches in traffic. There is a lot of production ahead for the junior.
Stats: 20 Carries, 175 Yards, 3 TDsrnThe 6′ 200 lbs FB/LB did it both ways for Brodhead on Friday night. On offense, Blake is the muscle of the ground game. Brodhead asks him to attack downhill, drive his feet, run through contact, and move the pile. All things that play to the big back’s strengths. Blake’s 4.8 speed also allowed him to break off a 90+ yard TD. I was also impressed with his blocking ability. He made several key blocks to open the running lane wide open. Blake is a big, physical presence that helps set the tone in the trenches. The thunder to a dangerous thunder-lightning duo.
Stats: 19 Carries, 111 Yards, 2 TDsrnLevi was a key piece towards St. Mary’s Springs run to the title game last fall. He is back this year leading the way again. The 6′ 195 lbs RB/LB currently holds offers from UW- River Falls, and UW- Platteville. It is easy to see what the next level must love about him. Levi plays both positions the exact same way. Aggressive. Physical. Downhill with a head full of steam, and with the athletic traits to be able to continue playing like that at the next level. Levi is also a very decisive runner. He picks his spot and attacks. No hesitation in his running when he has the ball. He has been fun to watch the past coupe years and deserves even more attention.
Stats: 26 Carries, 143 Yards, 2 TDsrnAnother week, another standout performance from the junior out of Edgar. Karter takes over games on the ground, and as an LB. RB is where I project him to play at the next level. The 5’10” 210 lbs ball carrier is a big ball of muscle. I love watching him carry the rock as he absorbs hits and keeps right on heading down the field. His low center of gravity paired with his compact frame makes it so hard to take him down without wrapping him up and gang tackling him. While being that big and strong, Karter also has the agility to jump cut or spin off off defenders, keep his balance and accelerate back to top speed. Butt has gotten better and better throughout the season. He is definitely one of the top RB prospects in the Class of 2024.
