The Class 6A-1 state championship game is set for Friday night at 7PM in Edmond as #3 Bixby will face off with #6 Owasso. These two teams met all the way back in late August to kick off the 2022 football season. And they’ll meet again on Friday night to decide the state champion in the state’s largest class. In this post, we’re taking a look at some of the Bixby Spartans that you need to know about heading into Friday night’s game. The Rams were hit right out of the gate with the injury bug as they lost star wide receiver Cole Adams Cole Adams 6’0″ | WR Owasso | 2023 State OK in the first game of the season. While it’s not easy to replace a prospect headed to Alabama, the Rams have found success. The emergence of senior wideout Anthony Hills Anthony Hills 6’2″ | WR Owasso | 2023 State OK has certainly helped the Rams this season as he’s become their leading receiver on the season. And it started in that game against Bixby in late August. With Adams down, Hills had a big second half and despite the Rams coming up short in week zero, it was apparent then that Hills was on the verge of having a breakout season. And that’s how this year has played out. Despite being the number one guy and teams knowing that going in, Hills has still been able to produce in a big way.
Owasso junior is a player that has been on our radar for a little over a year now but it’s mainly been for what he’s done in 7v7 during the offseason. He’s a smaller player who is lightning quick with the ball in his hands. But the size questions still lingered and we wanted to see what he could do with the pads on. He has answered those questions and then some so far this season. Not only has Thomas been dynamic on offense, he’s also given the Rams a boost in the return game. And all you need to do is put on the film of the Union game and see that Thomas is a dynamic player on offense. Going against one of the top defensive units in the state, Thomas could not be contained. The Rams use him in the perfect way on offense and he’s enjoyed a breakout season because of it.
Highlights
Similar to Hills on the offensive side of the ball, there was another breakout player from that week zero game against Bixby and that was senior linebacker Kunta Jordan Kunta Jordan 6’0″ | LB Owasso | 2023 State OK . From that point on, we’ve been watching what Jordan can do on the field and he added even more depth to an already loaded linebacker class in the state this year. Jordan has lived in opposing backfields this season. He has over 100 tackles on the season and is tied for the lead in sacks and tackles for loss. That doesn’t include the numbers of hurries that he has and his ability to put pressure on the quarterback and get him on the move. Going up against Bixby in August, Jordan had success and he’ll look to lean on that this week as the Rams look to capture their third state title in the last six years.
Fresh off his game-winning touchdown in the Union game, Owasso senior quarterback Mason Willingham Mason Willingham 6’1″ | QB Owasso | 2023 State OK is playing with the utmost confidence coming into this week. He’s one of the more experienced quarterbacks in the state and it has shown this season. In addition to what he does in the passing game, Willingham has also had to step up and be Owasso’s primary option in the run game. He leads the Rams in rushing as Owasso has had incredibly bad luck with running back health this season. Willingham has answered that call and is looking forward to getting another crack at the Spartans on Friday night in Edmond. Willingham has the Owasso offense clicking and they will be looking to continue that momentum this week when they face off with Bixby.
One player that we’ve known about since the first game of his sophomore season is senior defensive tackle Tyler Rich Tyler Rich 6’1″ | DL Owasso | 2023 State OK . That year, Rich broke out as a dominating defensive tackle for the Rams and ended up having a very successful sophomore campaign. Last year, he benefitted from lining up next to All American Chris McClellan, who is now seeing playing time at Florida. This season, Rich has been one of the more productive players up front for the Rams. Owasso was going to have quite a few new faces on the defensive side of the ball and Rich has been one of the leaders of the defense from the start of the season. Like we mentioned with Jordan, the Owasso defense is playing with a lot of confidence right now coming off their performance against Union.
