This past Friday, I had the pleasure of seeing what I believe to be two of the more talented teams in the state in the Franklin County Flyers and Bryan Station Defenders. In a very exciting, back and forth scrimmage, the Flyers came out on top in the end in dramatic fashion by stopping a Bryan Station two-point conversion attempt to seal the 21-20 victory. While there was a ton of promising talent on both sides, these are the players that stood out to me the most in this scrimmage.
To kick things off for the winning team, I have a player that I have been high on all summer. Peyton Ledford Peyton Ledford 6’3″ | 250 lbs | ATH Franklin County | 2023 State KY is a big, physical linebacker that moves very well for his size. He showed that he has the lateral mobility to move sideline to sideline with a sense of urgency. Ledford also does a great job of reading his keys and coming downhill quickly. Once he gets to the ball carrier, he explodes through contact and makes his presence felt as a tackler. He was also used on offense as an H-Back and tight end. Peyton is a very physical blocker and is a very reliable short yardage ball carrier as it takes a team to bring him down. Ledford is committed to Army and will look to be a very valuable player that can be used in multiple positions if needed at the next level.
The next player that impressed me, to no surprise, is our fourth ranked player in the class of 2023, running back Kaden Moorman Kaden Moorman 5’10” | 205 lbs | RB Franklin County | 2023 State KY . Moorman showed great vision as a ball carrier, letting his offensive linemen seal their blocks and create running lanes. Once he found the running lane, he hit the hole downhill in a hurry. Moorman also showed an impressive combination of speed and elusiveness in the open field. He showed that he has the moves in the open field to make defenders miss but also has the pure speed once he hits the second level to run away from the defense. Mark Stoops and staff look to have gotten yet another star from the Bluegrass state to commit to them as Moorman should be very much in the Mr. Kentucky conversation this season.
Gavin Hurst
Gavin Hurst
A player that I honestly didn’t know much about coming into this game that stood out to me is Gavin Hurst. He made the start at quarterback for the Flyers and had some very impressive moments. Hurst is an athletic, dual threat quarterback that shows great pocket awareness and the ability to tuck the ball and pick up yards on the ground as a ball carrier. He also displayed an impressive deep ball with good touch, putting the ball where only his receiver could catch it. Hurst also played some defense at safety and showed solid ball skills, coming away with an interception late in the game. He will be a player to watch as Franklin County will be very much in the spotlight this season.
Gilead Galloway
Gilead Galloway
Gilead Galloway is a player that coaches have been talking very highly of coming into this season that I finally got a chance to evaluate. He lines out on the outside for the most part at receiver and is a very dangerous deep threat. Galloway has the speed to run right by defensive backs on fade routes and showed the ability to catch the ball in stride and run away for a touchdown. He also has impressive route running skills with the ability to create separation with quick breaks in his routes. His speed also allowed him to pose as a threat as a ball carrier on jet sweeps, keeping the defense on their toes even when he was just being used as a decoy. Gilead doesn’t currently hold any reported offers but should be on the radar of college coaches as he has the talent to play at the next level
Ty Taylor
Ty Taylor
An unknown player to me before this game that caught my eye and many people around me were raving about is 2024 running back/linebacker Ty Taylor. Ty was a part of a very talented running back rotation for the Flyers that never seemed to miss a beat regardless of who was on the field. Taylor is a physical, downhill runner that hits the open running lane hard and is very difficult to bring down on first contact. He also showed the speed in the open field to pick up extra yards once he gets through the line of scrimmage. On defense, he did a great job of reading his keys and getting downhill in a hurry. Once he got to the ball, he showed that he is a very reliable open field tackler as he did a great job of securing the tackle and running his feet on contact. Taylor will be a key piece to this Flyers football team over the next couple years that I fully expect to attract some college interest.
Dewan Leach
Dewan Leach
Dewan Leach is a new young addition to this Franklin County team that coaches and parents have been raving about to me. After finally seeing him in person, the hype is definitely real! Leach is a 6’3″, 300 pound offensive tackle that is a physical mauler in the run game. He explodes out of his stance and keeps his feet churning, driving his man off the line of scrimmage. Leach also showed decent footwork in pass protection which is hard to find at that young of an age. At only 13 years old, Leach looks like a young man that can come in and start if asked to this season and should be a fun player to watch grow over the next four years.
While his team fell short in the end of this game, Trenton Cutwright Trenton Cutwright 6’1″ | 160 lbs | QB Bryan Station | 2024 State KY was the most impressive player on the field on Friday in my eyes. Cutwright showed great pocket mobility, with the ability to step up and move out of the pocket to avoid pressure off the edge. When under pressure, he showed a very impressive ability to keep his eyes down the field and make throws on the run. He also showed an absolute cannon of an arm, leading his receivers down the field in the deep passing game. Cutwright is also very dangerous as a ball carrier as he showed the speed and elusiveness to tuck the ball and pick up big plays on the ground. From what I’ve heard, Cutwright is also a talented baseball and basketball player so it remains to be seen which sport he will play at the next level but he definitely has a bright future on the football field if he chooses to pursue that path!
Highlights
Dejour Fogle
Dejour Fogle
Sticking on the offensive side of the ball for the Defenders, Dejour Fogle was an unknown name to me coming into this game that put on quite a show on Friday night. Fogle lined up both in the slot at receiver and in the backfield as a running back and impressed at both positions. As a receiver, he showed blazing speed, running right by defensive backs in the deep passing game and also catch the ball in stride and run away from the defense. He scored a touchdown on a very impressive long connection from Cutwright. As a ball carrier, he showed the vision to find the open running lane and hit the hole downhill in a hurry once he found it. Fogle also lined up as an outside linebacker/defensive back and showed the physicality to come downhill against the run and make his presence felt as a tackler. Dejour looks to be in the next wave of exciting athletes on the Bryan Station football team that should be very much in the spotlight over the next two seasons.
A player that has been high on my radar this off-season that I finally got the chance to see in person is outside linebacker, Dahvon Frazier Dahvon Frazier 6’2″ | 215 lbs | LB Bryan Station | 2024 State KY . He is a very athletic pass rusher off the edge that shows a quick first step off the ball to earn an early advantage over opposing offensive tackles. Frazier showed the ability to win off the edge with an impressive combination of strength and speed along with some solid pass rush moves. He also showed great awareness and athleticism once he got to the quarterback, coming away with an impressive pass deflection on Friday. Frazier also played on the offensive side of the ball as he lined up as an H-Back but he shines the brightest on defense. Dahvon currently holds offers from Southeast Missouri State and Eastern Kentucky but I expect more to come as he has the talent to play at the Division I level.
Another junior linebacker for the Defenders that has stood out to me this summer and continued to impress on Friday is Jason Hocker Jason Hocker 6’1″ | 235 lbs | LB Bryan Station | 2024 State KY . Hocker lines up as a true inside linebacker and does a great job of reading his keys. Once he reads his keys and finds the ball, he comes downhill in a hurry and meets the ball carrier in the hole. He is also a very reliable tackler, whether it is in the gap or in the open field. Hocker also showed great lateral agility with the ability to move sideline to sideline to get to the ball. I also was impressed with Hocker’s ability in coverage as he was very fluid in his drops and showed the ability to keep his head on a swivel and read route combinations. Jason currently holds offers from Eastern Kentucky, Southeast Missouri State, Akron, and Tennessee Tech, and I expect many more to come as I believe he is true Division I talent at linebacker.
